  1. To quoute from a guide book for Salvation Army Boy Scout Troops.

Any propertry acquired by the Scout Unit is considered by the Boy Scouts Of America to be the property of the Salvation Army and in the event that the unit ceases to exist shall be supplied by the salvation army to other Scout Purposes. From what I understand talking to Scouters from other national Scouting Associations this is true of most if not all National Scouting Associations.

As for the troop number that is also the property of the CO and cannot and should not be allowed to go to another CO. We had this situation recently here in the council area where I live and the ruling was this. The troop number and equipment are owned by the CO and can be used as they see fit. If the unit moves and wants to take the number with them it doesn't happen neither are they allowed to take nay equipment other than personal property.

  2. We have several cub packs help us with our bellringing during the Christmas season. THe kids enjoy it and it shows the community that Scouts are helping to make it better. Best of all the kids tell thier friends before their time and they stop by and the scouts use it as a recruiting tool.

  3. Our background checks through the church goes back until the age of 18. Before that most records of juevenile behavior are sealed by the Court. We are also given the opportunity to challenge any incorrect information that turns up. Granted the process make take some time but it is worth it in my opinion. I am glad the Scouts are finaly doing something to protect the youth instead of just doing lip service to YPP>

  4. To jump off the pagan bandwagon and back on to the original topic. In the Salvation Army there was a scout like organization called The General's Life Saving Scouts which was founded in The Salvation Army with the blessing of Lord Baden-Powell. In fact B-P tried to recruit the Founder of The Salvation Army William Booth as a Vice President in the Scouting movement. In the 30's the Life Saving Scouts became a member of the Scouting organization in their country. This is said to prove that even the Boy Scout's dont have the trademark on the word scouts

  5. My troop is Registered to a Salvation Army Church and we are already doing the most extensive background checks we can. We welcome the Boy Scout screening as another step in protecting the youth. It just shows that the Boy Scouts are doing thier best to protect the youth entrusted to us and also lowers their liability in case one of the leaders does do somethig.

  6. I remember being a Scout in the late 70's and early 80's and remember having to do this test for Swimming also. It isn't as easy as it looks and just wearing a PFD does make it easier. I would love to try it in the current uniform pants and see if they rip or hold up to the test.

  7. We have patrol boxes and the rubbermaid tubs. I am really starting to prefer the tubs over the patrol boxes for several reasons easier to carry from trailer to camp site than patrol boxes. No stinkong legs to put on them and third point you dont have to worry about tipping them over.

  8. To quote from the leadership application under leadreship requirements "The applicant must possess the moral, educational, and emotional qualities that the Boy Scouts Of America deems neccessary to afford positive leadership to youth. The applicant must also be of the correct age, and subscribe to the Declaration of Religious Principle, and abide by the Scout Oath or Promise, and the Scout Law."

Webster defines oath as Main Entry: oath

1 a (1) : a solemn usually formal calling upon God or a god to witness to the truth of what one says or to witness that one sincerely intends to do what one says (2) : a solemn attestation of the truth or inviolability of one's words b : something (as a promise) corroborated by an oath

By "glossing" over the religious principle as found in the leadership application and as part of the oath. He has violated the first word of the Scout Law "Trustworthy" which is to show ones self worthy of trust or confidence.

In a paper published at location http://www.scout.org/library/spiritualdev_e.pdf

which is the international scout movement website on page 33 Lord Baden Powell said "No man is much good unless he believes in God and obeys His laws. So every Scout should have a religion"

and again at the 1926 Joint Conference of Commissioners of Scouting and Guiding in High Leigh England. Lord Baden-Powell said the following" I have been asked to describe more fully than shown in the "Scouting for Boy's" what was in my mind as regards religion when I instuited Scouting and Guiding. I was asked "Where does Religion come in?"It is already there It is the fundamental factor underlying scouting and guiding"

Even from the outset of the Scouting movement religion has played a part in the Scout movement. To be a leader or Scout is to acknolwedge religions part in Scouting. Atheism denies all aspects of God and that is in conflict with the basic tenets of the scout movement.

  9. Having been with a troop in a urban district for 6 years now. Here is some good advice.

One find the packs in your area start working with their leaders so you can have some rapport with them at crossover time.

Two Most families in my area are single parents so we don't rely on them to much for the "traditional" parent roles. We have a great CO so we can do this. We keep them involved by newsletters and calls before any scout activity.

Three do not worry about purchasing complete scout uniforms. A troop T-Shirt works fine if tyou need uniforms contact the council a lttle known facts that some councils have money set by for uniforms for urban troops.

Four maintain a grreat relationship with the church invite the pastor and elders on campouts and encourage them to et registered and trained.

Five build a working relationship with trhe local schools again for recruiting purposes.

Six if there are other troops in your urban area work with them encourage joint campouts so that the troops get to know each other.

Seven purchase stock in a aspirin company you are going to need it for all the aspirin you are going to need.

One more thing let be known through the old scouters network or roundtable that you are looking for good used equipment. We got some great deals on near new equipment when another troop bought brand new stuff. We also got the same deal on uniforms.(This message has been edited by scomman)

  10. Rooster7,

There were a few posts that seemed to be advocating that position in my opinion. I was just posting response to them. I think the reason most of us got involved in Scouting was that we thought we could make a difference in another persons life and still hold to it. The troop I work with comes from a neighborhood with a high number of single parent families and low income with a high amount of drug trafficking there in the past. We count as a success every boy that graduates from High School and goes on to college or career without using drugs. Hopefully, when the time comes for one of them to take over a troop they will look back at we did by sacrificng time and money to make sure they had the knowledge they needed. I don't think it to much to spend the time and effort to help anyone.

  11. So...people who don't think as you do, support NAZI Germany. Is that your point? What exactly to do you think posters are saying?

I think you're going a little over the top.

Let the personal attacks begin because someone voiced a opinion that is contrary to somebody elses. When I took debate it was considered bad form to imediately attack someone like that. No I dont think that just because they don't agree with me that they are Nazis. It just when people call for the abortion and murder of people that fit a certain profile this is exactly the same logic that they used to justify the murder of 6 million people. They are not like us they are different they lok different these are the same arguments that the nazis leader used. To advocate the forced sterilization of couples that don't meet the standards set by someone else is the policy of the "Final Solution". I f this is what America is coming to then it is time for us to think on what it means to be a American.

I am a Native American and know what it is like to live in a society that was almost forcibly wiped out by another culture because it was different. My father is ashamed of his culture and tried for years to hide it because he was taught it was bad in school. To this day he cannot speak the language of his culture because it was not allowed to be spoken under penalty of law.(This message has been edited by scomman)

  12. So, hey, let's save everyone a LOT of time - let's have somebody generate the criteria by which we can identify which kids we can ignore right off the bat, ok? This'd give us all so much MORE time for the easy ones and the ones we like!

oooh, ooh, ooh - and let's start an mandatory abortion program for everyone who matches any profiles of personality types known to produce such children so we can nip THAT bud before it's even grown!!!!

It was tried by a group called the National Socialist Party in a country called Germany. That is why so many of us are against the murder of people just because they have a certain profile. From what I have read of thi threads is this has devolved from a discussion of children being raised by gay couples to personal attacks on posters.

Before we go on let me tell you my story. I grew up in a home where violence was the answer to everything and tried to run away several times and even tried to kill myself. As I got older I turned to alcohol as a drug of choice to numb my anger at life and everything. I even tried to kill myself a couple of times more and racked up a nice record of misdemanor charges. I was headed for Jail or Death my choice. But someone took a intrest in my life and that has mase a difference instead of being in prison or in a grave I am now in a position to help others and I do. That is why I feel that ALL KIDS ARE WORTH SAVING.

  13. First year as Scoutmaster just completed Scout Master Fundamentals and was told the troop was going to Estes Park Colorado for the Summer Camp. I have some expiernce in the mountains I have gone there camping a few times. Told the boy's to make sure they packed warm clothing because even though it was 80's during ths day it will get cold in the evenings. Also told them to bring rain gear some did and some didn't. THe fun part was everyday between 2:00 and 3:00 it would rain our tents were so wet that if you just touched them the water came cascading in from the material. Finally we had to move into a old barn for a coupe of days to let the tents dry out and we slept in the loft. Then we went white water rafting on the Arkanasas River in Colorado and throughly enjoyed it and on the way back we stopped at a natural hot spring and went swimming. It was great and all of us who went still love talking about it.

  14. I carry a leatherman type knife in my bag as well as a compass, rope, lighter,Flashlight, and first aid supplies. I know I am weird for doing this but I have at times needed all of it for some reason or other plus It takes the "Be Prepared" to the everyday. I keep the knife in a special pocket on the bag so I can remove it if I go into a area where it is prohibted.

The only time the scouts carry a knife in my area are on outings again due to the fact that the schools will expel anyone carrying a knife to school.

The other leaders carry knives to and we teach the new scouts to use them as soon as they go on thier first campout.

  15. One of the things we do in our troop is to cut down on sugar intake after dinner. This is easy by not alowing any snacks except for what is planned and sugar free cocoa. The Boys went camping in SOuth Dakota during the summer and one of their tents wasn't zipped up during the night and raccoons got in during the night while they were on a night hike and spread the Boy's pack all over to get to the candy he had in his tent and took it so they are pretty good about not keeping candy or snacks in their tents.

Wake up is handled by the fact that the leaders get up and are having coffee and the SPL has a alarm clock.

  16. I remember a few years ago when a poll came out that said approxiametly 10% of all americans are gay and that they will exert a significant amount of control at polls. Then a couple years later another poll came out and said that the first poll was in error instead of 10% of all americans are gay it was actually less than 5% The only reason I bring it up is I don't believe everything I read until I see the questions that were asked in the poll. That is why they publish the questions in the paper for political polls.

  17. THe scout must atend 2 out of 4 meetings in a month to be eligible to attend the outing or activity for the month. If they are involved in sports at school and we are informed by parents as long as they make the outings and are still working on advancement on their own they are still welcome to attend whenever they can. If a parent calls and lets us know that their son will not be at scouts we greatly appreciate it but we don't hold it against them.

  18. I dont know but we had the same situation where are COR was also our SM for a while. He still is the SM and now his wife is the COR. I think its works great we managed to keep a great leader involved in Scouting and one who is also a woodbadge trained leader. I know that the council here hasn't raised any problems with it.
