  1. It seems that BSA has heard people's complaints. They are now selling he Patch of the day set online. It is $49.99 for the set, and you have to buy the entire set. They are also selling a couple other things from the Jamboree, like the belt buckle, the belt, a shirt, and a hat.

  2. Yeah, the salad bar was awesome.

I had just forgotten about the other stuff in the arena dinner bag.

Other than the drink being frozen I didn't mind the cold lunches. We usually sent one person down to the kiosk with everyone's tags to pick up the lunches for the booth. By the time they got back everything else was just right.

  3. I don't know what it was at the other staff subcamps, but at Mahone some of the actual menu items differed from the posted menu. I know for a fact that we never had chocolate chip or strawberry pancakes. There were also a couple breakfasts where we had SOS, but that was not on the menu either. Some of the dinner items were a little different too, but I don't remember specifically which ones.

I will say this though, despite being mass produced, most of the food was pretty good. It was definitely better than I expected. The only real food complaint was the kiosk dinner for the arena show night. There was less food there than at lunch, it was just a bag of chips, a pudding cup, a juice pocket, and a couple pieces of candy.

  4. "EXPLAIN to the victim what it means to not be drowning.

DEMONSTRATE to the victim that you yourself are doing fine.

GUIDE the victim through some team-building exercises.

ENABLE the victim to now go save himself!"

Kudu, thank you, that is the funniest thing I have heard all day.

  5. I and most of the students in the schools I have attended have not seen school as an entitlement, we see it as a requirement, and it is. In California you have to be in school full time until you turn 16 (I can dig up a citation for that if needed). If you cannot afford to go to a private school of some sort you have to go to the public school. Yes, some of you may say "what about homeschooling?" I have been down that route, it is way more trouble than it is worth. Whether you are trying to get into college, or trying to get back into the regular school system, it is very difficult (I am speaking from personal experience here).

I have been down all three paths, public schools, private schools, and homeschooling, and the way I see it something that is a requirement cannot be an entitlement. How can you be entitled to something that is not even an option?

  6. I have found, though not extensively tested, that a couple sloshes of bleach in a 5 gallon bucket of water is not enough to stain your clothes. That is unless you are suprised and drop the bottle on the ground, then everything is gone.

Bleach is definitely awesome at killing mold and getting rid of odors, as is vinegar, but I don't know what affect vinegar would have on the tent material. For cleaning the tent I would suggest putting together a couple spray bottles of diluted bleach and using those. You end up using less bleach, and it is a little more environmentally conscious.

If you do use the bleach in the spray bottles please make sure the is very good ventilation. It in no fun to be standing in a bleachy fog.(This message has been edited by sailingpj)

  7. I know that even on the days I drank the most water I only drank 1 gallon. I didn't have any heat related problems either.

The one day that I tried to drink the quart an hour that they were recommending I got a little queasy, so I slowed down a lot to like 1 cup per hour (1 cup per hour*16 hours/4= 4 quarts per 16 hours= 1 gallon per day), and was just fine.

  8. Thanks for the answers. I was just kind of wondering about that. I don't really agree with requiring people to participate in that kind of event. It just doesn't seem right to me. I think that for something like that you should have some sense of self motivation. Like, "I want to do this so that I can get the patch", or I want to do this because it is fun, or healthy, or whatever. It shouldn't be, I am doing this because my Scoutmaster said I have to. That always takes the fun out of things.

BTW, I am talking about the run there, I completely agree with you guys saying stay out of camp until dinner.

  9. I was on the bus at the end of the day at Jambo, I was talking to a couple of the participants and I found out that everyone in their troop was required to at participate in the 5K fun run. They didn't necessarily have to run, but they had to at least walk the course. What I am wondering is whether that was a jambo wide thing, everyone had to participate, or whether that was just that troop. I just know some people who don't really like that kind of thing, and one of the guys I was talking to wouldn't have participated in it if he wasn't required to.

  10. "I don't know if this was the case for all attendees, but when I saw my son's badge and neck cord, I also noticed a couple of extra cards attached to it, including one that listed suggested water consumption for different heat indexes.

Another interesting note -- when I saw his picture taken at the arena show, as other units were filing in, I noticed there were cases of water dropped all over the place. I have no idea if it was enough water for the density of guests at the show, but at least someone was making a correction versus 5 years ago.

    Guy "

All the participants and staff got those tags with minimum water consumption guidelines.

The OA Service Corps put out all the waters for the arena shows. For the first one they said that between what they put out on the field, and what they had stockpiled to hand out on the way in and out, there was 15 bottles of water per person. So a little more than half a case per person.

I don't know if they used the same amount for the second show, but I do know that for both shows only a fraction of the water that they brought in was used.

  11. " Lines at the Trading Posts were reaching blocks long by the 8AM hour. And, yes, they were all adults."

We were walking by trading post C one morning at like 0730 (someone in our tent had set their alarm wrong) and there was already a line at least half a block long, and the people at front looked like they had been there for at least an hour already. It was crazy.

  12. Just so you all know us staff earned the opportunity to get the t-shirt by winning the previous game. They split the audience into four sections and threw out four big beach balls and had a race to see which section could get it to a designated point first. The staff section just had better coordination and aim. Also, there were no non-staff in the section they were launching the t-shirts into.

In my tent we had three people who worked backstage at the arena and they said that both guys got an IPad.

On another note, if you see a white blotch anywhere in the sea of tan that was the audience you are looking at the Sea Scout youth staff. We were there in our dress whites. It was awesome.
