  1. You guys just reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Michael. John Travolta plays the Archangel Michael, he makes a few people lives better and along the way stops to see some landmarks such as the worlds largest ball of string.

  2. I marked the BSA and SPL boxes then explained in the noes section that the Sea Scouts are one of the programs run by the BSA. I also explained that a Boatswain is equivalent to an SPL. I even included a short description of the responsibilities of a Boatswain.

I was surprised not to see Quartermaster there, but I won't earn it in time for me to put it on that application anyway. Probably.

Board of Review for Ordinary? That is new to me, I saw that it is in the SSM, but none of the three ships I have been a part of actually do that. Nor do they do a Skipper's conference.

  3. I just have to ask.

"and suggest that both Jimmy Carter, who is the only President to also have been a Scoutmaster, and Gerald Ford, the first President to earn Eagle Scout"

Is that a prediction that we while we may have future presidents who earned eagle, we will never have a president who was a scoutmaster again?

  4. I just came across this one.

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man below says, "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees North latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees West longitude."

"You must be an engineer," says the balloonist.

"I am," replies the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost."

The man below says, "You must be a manager."

"I am," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you are going. You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in the exact same position you were in before we met, but now it is somehow my fault."

  5. Just a thought, I was at the pool earlier this evening and I remembered this thread, I tried swimming with only one half my body. It took a couple laps, but I was able to do the backstroke with one arm and the same leg. It was extremely tiring, but it is possible. You may want to suggest that he work at it, I know that I would get a lot more satisfaction out of overcoming a challenge without an alternate requirement.

He has to complete the other requirements first, so maybe suggest he spend an hour a week, while he is doing the other requirements, in the pool. If at when he is done with the other requirements you think he still can't complete the swimming stuff then process the paperwork for alternate requirements. If nothing else he will be more comfortable, and hopefully safer, in the water.

  6. What you have to do then is varnish the knot itself. I was building this sailing dink, and decided to go old fashioned with everything (the ends of the spars are even painted white), so I threw a turkshead onto the oar so that the oarlock couldn't slide off the handle. Then I soaked the oar in thickened epoxy and varnished it. Just a few hours work (minus drying times), and the oar is now water resistant, and the turkshead is not going to be coming off anytime soon.

Just a suggestion for a walking stick, you probably don't want that to get water damaged either.

I was given these knifes as a tip when I was working on fishing boat. Neither of them had handles, so I made my own with a french whipping and a little bit of creativity. Until they got stolen those were the best knives I have ever used.

Just out of curiosity, you guys who say it took forever to make a turkshead that wouldn't slip, was that your first time making one?

  7. Chocolate covered espresso beans are the greatest, though chocolate covered bacon is very good too. As for coffee, I have one of those stove top espresso makers (I am to tired to go downstairs to see what kind). It is really easy to use, just put the water in the bottom, the coarsely ground beans in the little tray thing ant turn on the heat. 5-10 minutes later whip up some milk and presto, triple shot cappuccino.

That is at home of course, when my ship goes cruising I have a single serve french press. I bring my own beans because they are way better than the preground Folders stuff that my ship buys (my mom's boyfriend has a business in Costa Rica and he brings back a suitcase full of freshly roasted top quality beans a couple times a month).
