  1. Perhaps, asking if anyone can name some the LNT principals or what you should your carry in your pack for hiking. How to identify poision ivy, etc.. all good things through out day.
  2. Welcome, Not sure what type gear you are refering too? With that I will say that things like, mess kits, water bottle, lights, first aid kit,etc.. those things will be used in both. My son is also Webelos and have a day pack with all his hiking gear in it, which he will take with him. Agree with the Backpack comment they could out grow it and also we have some troops that don't BACKPACK alot but does more day hiking. Lot depends on your style of camping, what you can afford. Do you camp in cold weather? Sleeping bag for that? Best to you both,
  3. AntelopeDud What part of city do you live in? I am in BP District, was you a former Antelope in WB?
  4. Moosetracker, Courious what state do you live in? Where I live we have a scout night also this weekend, just wondering.
  5. Hawk, Agree with you about the "got it" now move on type of approach that seems to be norm. Having a boy Still with his den even for a few months after earning his AOL is good thing sometimes. Other boys that are behind can see it can be done. I like the part of knowing that I told my son after he gets his AOL there is no rush to join a troop. He can take more time and find one that works for him. Not only that he can go camping with them more to see if he really likes the troop.

  8. Not sure if every DL is rushing the AOL, other to say it can happen. The AOL is not a hard thing to in a year, especially if you have active boy. I don't think it is also fair to make a boy wait to join if HE CHOOSES. My den I have boys close to requirements, and ones that will be next year as they are the ones who misses alot meetings, etc... My son has been to camp and we are a year around pack, so in june and our den started june. We been active so boys could earn enough to finish the requirements for AOL, but just because boy has earned it doesn't mean he has to or wants to join a tro
  9. ScoutNut states; If a Scout has met all of the Boy Scout joining requirements, then yes, he can join a Boy Scout Troop. However, if he is still in 4th grade, he must have been a Webelos Cub Scout for 6 months since turning 10 years old in order to earn the AOL. The requirements for earning AOL have not changed. Neither have the Boy Scout joining requirements This is correct info, don't know why people are not missing some of the info? My son who will be 10 this month by summer he will 10 1/2 and will have all requirements done for his AOL. NOT only that he will be done 4th grade. Whet
  10. But in the end, without parents, we don't have boys" Think that is part of it for sure.
  11. barry, Thanks for the feedback. I will agree that alot of problems is lack of training. With regards to training, how is someone new to scouts know what is, or isn't good training? Is there something out there to measure it by? I been to some training things and don't think they was much help other to say I went thru it to have a card to show for it. One thing I found out VERY Quickly, there is NOT A LOT Help from our council with things. Our unit have seen our UC 1 time in almost 2 years. We don't get a lot info stuff that would be helpful to us.
  12. Den leaders should not take all the heat for this. You can have good, enthusiastic well meaning Dl, but boy/parent need to be factored in also. Why do we always blame the DL? In my case I can get outside with boys alot, do projects, want my webelos to go camping as much as possible. Schedule things all the time, but LIL Johnny don't show up? So we blame a DL? Know some things is a cost thing so I don't try to make everything about cost. going camping, etc... But then boys want to camp? In our area we can camp councils campgrounds for free, so only cost would be for food, gas. There
  13. All this talk about the Webelos is some of the reason my son wants to go BS as soon as he can.Agree on some of the things said in this topic. Den leaders can get burned out quickly, on other hand I am a WDL that wants to camp and be outdoors as much as possible, with me it is parents that can't, won't or ??? to make it possible for johnny to be there. Case in point, I did a Tigers den once, on 1 of the go see it we went to a cool park, I went to pick up mom and son so boy could go, pull up at house and mom asks "Do I Have to COME?" So in my case have boys that can go earlier than o
  14. Being a Webelos DL have to agree to the part of camping and visiting troops. I try to have boys meet as many troops I can simply because not every time Johnny will make a meeting. I like boys to see lots of troops so they get to see something that 1 of them is doing or have done like camps, etc... I personally can camp 3 weeks a month with different troops and just us, but don't as most can hardly pay for 1 trip. So I try to visit local troops often ,to change it up and put BS in their vision.
  15. Baloo is for pack/family camping. There is seperate training for Webelos. In my district it is required for webelo training for den campouts, in another district says it is recommened both from same council. Baloo has no bearing on this

  17. I bought the movie, watched last night with son. Movie is okay, it had some funny parts in it. I never have been to summer camp so can't say what goes on during them. Son is exicted about going to BS soon , thought this would be thing to watch with him.I'll probably watch it again, but won't make it weekly thing.
  18. ScoutNut, Let me make this clearer sorry for the misunderstanding on my part. The troop the boy went with has a history with our pack. His den meets at the troops c/o and we know the SM there. In fact I have been to one of his troop meetings. So it is not like boy just picked out a troop and went with them. Now as to my den camping, the 2 deep rule would be in place like a I said, with hopefully more than than that.According the G2SS that WEBELOS need a adult/guardian for campout. It never states that it could be the DL? have troops that want us to go with them but tells us th
  19. Thanks for the replies. As to my training have done WELOT training in my district it required, however in another district it is not in smae council. I will always have at LEAST 2 deep, have hazard weather and least 1 person YP with me at ALL TIMES. I am trying to figure out how 1 boy from a differnt den with a troop camping. Boys mom signed a permission slip , so I guess it gave the okay to the SM to take him? My problem is have boys with single parents most with more than 1 other sib, not giving a excuse to step up and help at least once. But if you have the required 2 deep in pl
  20. Understand going thru some different answers from 1 person to the next on a different matter myself.
  21. Baloo is for Pack Camping not webelos camping. I did WELOT training it was geared for Webelos leaders to take den camping.
  22. Hi all, Was reading the G2SS with reagrds to webelos camping as it reads, A Webelos Scout may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by an adult. In most cases, the Webelos Scout will be under the supervision of his parent or guardian. It is essential that each Webelos Scout be under the supervision of a parent-approved adult. Joint Webelos den-troop campouts including the parents of the Webelos Scouts are encouraged to strengthen ties between the pack and troop. Den leaders, pack leaders, and parents are expected to accompany the boys on approved trips. Okay, here is
  23. Hi I have set up a site thru smdscouts. It is low cost $12.00 a year if you use there server. It works well for me as I don't know how many people actually uses it? It has everything we need, might give a try? their site is, www.smdscouts.com Thanks
  24. Guess it would depend on the troop itself how it is ran and such.We have been invited to a troop outing which soem older boys are doing a longer back pack hike around 15 miles, while the younger boys and webelos would do a shorter say 3-5 mile hike. I am okay with that, but if the whole thing is design to interact with a troop in this case as a whole, how do you do that if half of boys are not around?
  25. Hi, have a question for all you more experienced scouters in troops about "gageing" a troop. Okay I have a lot of troops around me small to large. There is nothing wrong with a small troop necessarly but, my concern is when you have a troop of 6-8 boys, how can a new boy such as a recent crossover or just signed up learn the patrol method when all boys seem to eat and do things together? When son goes to troop, and he will make that call, don't want him to overlook a troop with a small number of boys thinking it won't be a good as a larger troop, after all that is how a troop grows
