  1. OGE & Trailpounder

Venturing crews cannot tell members they cannot wear a lodge flap. The kelly green shirt is an option to crew members regardless and national sets the standard for what can be worn on it. Just like no leader can add to it no one can take away things a scout has earned. What do we do tell the 2 Eagle scouts out of 8 males in a crew and 2 gold award receipiants out of 4 that they cannot wear the honors that they earned? Now talk about being silly!

As to the females not being allowed to be elected as a youth, no crew member is allowed to be elected as a youth, NONE, that goes for males also. In order to be elected you must be a member of a Boy Scout troop, not a Cub Pack or a Venturing Crew. Why is it that people believe that everything must be open to everyone. Not every member of a Boy Scout troop is eligable to be elected , those that are not just have to learn to live with it or do the things necessary to become eligable.

  2. Trail Pounder,

Why would it be wrong to wear a lodge flap on a venturing uniform? That comment is downright silly. Does that mean he should not wear his eagle badge? Or a female venturer should not wear her Gold award on her shirt? Just because you cannot earn something doesn't mean I have to change to suit you.

And even if a crew votes a specific uniform, venturers have the option of wearing the Kelly Green shirt at formal occasions. They cannot however tell another crew member what patches to wear or not wear if it authorized and he or she wants to wear it

  3. one of the things we started 3 yrs ago was to do our district dinner on a roundtable night. People are used to meeting on that night. We did a short presentation then awards and such. we use door prizes and gifts and trinkets.

When we started to go to this format we increased attendance by 200 percent.

  4. I do not want to get into the side tracked discussion about BOR or SM. I will answer the question what do the 5 points mean. They mean abolutly nothing except what ever rumors or stories someone can think up. I spent a number of years with the Old Guard, Army Ceremonial Unit, This question came up when we were looking at historical flags. According to the Researchers at the Institute of Herioldry the 5 pointed atar on the american flag was what was chosen for the first american flag. It has no recorded meaning. The scout badge just used the same 5 pointed star. So any meaning is another Urban scouting legand as far as I can see.

  5. Here is a question relating to this area. Everyone says the CO owns everything, a point which I dispute as no one has yet been able to show me or anyone a R&R that says that, Whats to stop a committee who is in this kind of situation from disposing of the troop equipment by transfering it to other troops? Say the committee like in this situation knows the CO is maybe looking to get rid of the troop, so you transfer ownership of the equipment to a neighboring troop, who then "holds" it for you until you recharter somewhere else. If the committee that the COR has approved votes to do this, whats to stop them?

Everyone says the funds and equipment belong to the CO, but that depends on which state you live in. Any lawyer will tell you that property laws vary greatly from state to state.

  6. Our troop here in Northern New York does Whitewater rafting. Infact this is our weekend, we are rafting the upper Hudson River. We coordinate this trip with several other troops. We do not own rafts due to cost and certification requirements.

We don't Kayak, but we canoe alot, and are working on the gear for Whitewater canoeing. We also sponsor a big canoeing weekend in June for anyone that wants to attend. This year we had 14 troops and over 180 scouts and scouters. We had a group come over 4 hrs to canoe this year. If anyone is interested let nme know I will send you details.

  7. Ann,

We all have burned one good once upon a time. Its not the end of a dutch oven, you can use this as a lesson for the girls on how to care for one.

My first time using one , I cooked a pineapple upside down cake. I put like 20 coals on bottom and 6-8 on top. Talk about burned. The brown sugar was sooooo badly burned even steel wool would not touch it. We boiled it for what seemed like hours. Ended up taking it to work to the automotive shop and puting it in the Bead Blaster(sand Blaster) to get burned sugar off. Then had to reseason it from scratch.

  8. Sparkie said" At the troop level, it is mandatory the boys sell around $190 to support the troop "

How can you make it mandatory? and what happens if you don't reach that figure? do you get kicked out?

We do an annual dues ($50.00) and use popcorn to supplement budget and split profit 50-50 with boys.

we do this so everyone pays equally

  9. I agree with BW, Why even try and compare. I have A daughter in GS and son in BS, I hope both stick with it and achieve the respective awards, but I never compare the two.

Everyones opinions will be different. And you know what they say about opinions.
