Anybody have any positive experiences with LDS Committees? I have rarely seen a functioning LDS Committee, but at times (like now) see one very strong. What do you other LDS guys expect from the role of a committee? I would expect the Cubs Committee to be separate from the Scout Committee. However, there are in theory three scout committees - Troop, Team, and Crew. I can see the benefits of having the 3 scout committees being a committee of the whole (entirely same membership), or having 3 separate committees if the manpower was available for it (not likely though). Thank you, rkfrance. I've reviewed that and it was helpful, but appears to be specific to a certain Stake. Regardless, it's good information to draw from. My question really regards what I will call a "myth" until proven otherwise - that LDS units need to have LDS-appointed Commissioners. A troop is a troop, whether the youth are 11-13 or 11-17, so unless somebody has some guidelines to back the myth, I'm going to be recommending some changes here in my local units. Great comments. SSS, great examples. Now why is it that people assume that a parent is a helicopter parent first, until proven otherwise? I've seen it on this board a few times. For example in jet526's thread, I didn't notice that the boys' father was involved more than anything peripheral, but others posted that he was a helicopter parent?

I need a little help figuring this out. Yes, definitely drop the LDS part of your argument, it's pretty inflammatory to us LDS guys trying to do things the right way. By the way, we had a 10 year old scout transfer to our unit from a non-LDS unit that had advanced him all the way to 1st Class, and didn't turn in the paperwork to council. Does that raise any red flags? However, I don't fault all non-LDS units for this issue. Interestingly, once we got that back under control with retraining and rechecking, he transferred back to the old troop.

Let me try to restate your issue to see if I have it right: Two scouts spent 4 Summer months in another scouting unit. During that 4 month period, they went to camp and 1) participated in the "pioneer" course, or whatever it is called to earn all their requirements all the way to 1st Class; 2) they earned the 4 historical merit badges that will only be available during 8 months of 2010; and 3) they earned canoeing. I've submitted forms for the council-level VLA to our DE over Venturing. She doesn't know how to submit this for final approval. Does anybody know the next step? Is there another form that needs to be submitted to National?

Considering Nondenominational usually translates to be Protestant Christian, that excludes it in my mind as the recommended route. Our Venturing is somewhat of a separate "District" and we are trying to establish some traditions. What do you think about an annual presentation of the Venturing Leadership Awards? I'm envisioning something similar to the annual District Award of Merit presentation, but using the VLA instead. There seems to be a similar number of VLA authorized each year as the DAM, thus my thought process on this. What do your councils and districts do differently?
