  1. Blaine, Having just finished as a Tiger Den Leader, I would say no. The Tigers have their Immediate Recognition emblem that he wears from his shirt pocket. Don''t forget that they can earn "beads" that are attached to that, not only for the requrements of earning their Tiger Badge, but the yellow elective beads. I had two boys that completed every single elective, and can easily earn do the same this year in Wolves. They would have arrows points covering their shirt by the time they reach Webelos, if this was the case! :-)
  2. After our first PWD last year, one of the Dad''s in our Pack spent a weekend building our very own. We used it for the first time at our Join Night last week. It is amazing! He found plans online by googling it. But he tailored the plans to "make it better." He is a great woodworker, so it was something that he wanted to do. Also, his track that he built looked far better than some of the kits I have seen. I think if you have someone that is capable of making a good track, go for it.
  3. WDL Mom, Contact your District. Our Council has an a person that can give tons of help in the area of a special needs scout. If your District does, they have resources available and can help guide you on the direction to take with this boy and his family.
  4. LC, we just started out last October. We initially (for paperwork) had our school as our CO, but when February came around, we presented before our school''s PTA. The PTA is now our CO. The school administration is very much behind the Pack, though. We even have our Charter displayed in the front office area. If you can get the PTA or PTO of your school to charter you from the beginning, it is easier in the paperwork area. Go to them and ask what you can do for them. Let them know that BSA insurance, not the PTA/PTO''s, will cover the Pack. That was a huge "selling" point for us.
  5. We just had join night. Our little Pack is growing. We started with 8 boys last October (3 Tigers, 5 Wolves). All 8 boys are continuing on and we are now at 15 boys! And in Tigers through Webelos. So, new Dens, new leaders needed. Since we are still new to recruiting adequate leadership, was just wondering a few things. We have some prospects, but based on the Bylaws we made last year, all new volunteers that wish to be a uniformed leader must go through an interview process with a panel made of our the Pack Committee. I came across a great worksheet from National that

  7. Tami, kuddos to you for being a CD. I am not sure that I could do it. And it sounds like you you go above and beyond to try and make a difference in even one boy's life!
  8. Why has the entire world become so worried about offending someone? What about the majority out there.... Unbelievable is right!!!
  9. Um, I'm game! lol! I would love to hear about it!
  10. Just chiming in here.... Our Council held an "experienced" uniform drive to coincide with the April Scout Fair. Folks can go to our council offices and purchase shirts for next to nothing. All the patches have been removed, so a clean slate. They have cub, boy, leader, venture shirts too. Does anyone else's council do this? We met one Pack during training last Fall that does require the entire uniform (pants, socks, everything). I would think that would be a hinderance on some families. Our Pack Committee actually put down in our parent guide last year that only the shir
  11. Infoscouter: Thanks, I didn't realize that! John: Good informtion! Thank you! epalmer: Hey, I didn't realize that! Actually, Troop 1 does have Crew along with them! We will ask about pulling a DC from them too!
  12. LisaBob: Good point. I definitely want a DC for my den (Wolves). Also, our council is having Pow Wow in October, so looking forward to that class. They are having a how to use your DC best type of thing. Thanks! :-)
  13. Calico: Well, we just started last October. Brand new Pack! Not just the leaders. We are just now getting a den with some Webelos I boys. And no, we do not have a sister unit. At least not yet. Give us time to build up the Pack first. We have 9 boys! Loved the ideas you posted though! Will definitely be using those to get our little Pack to become a great Pack!
  14. Carol: Yep! Already told everyone that there could be a chance of their car being killed. We have a dad that made a bunch of "mistake cars" he will be bringing. mtm: Thanks! local: Yep! We have a Mom that is on that one for us already! scoutldr: I agree! When our pack started up last October (yes, way after join night), there were only 2 of us that showed up. We did not get a call from our DE for 3 weeks later. It was very frustrating. That is one thing that we have all agreed will not happen with the "new group" that comes in this year! John: Definitel
  15. oldsm: Thank you for pointing that out. As all of us in our Pack and new to scouting, we need to be sure to "read up" on what is expected of a DC, and talk with the SM that we pull from. Thanks!
  16. CM Randy: Okay, that makes more sense. When we looked at the organizational chart, I guess it never occured to me that each Den would have it's own DC. Duh, sometimes the obvious things just get missed. Wow, I think that getting a DC for each Den will be a HUGE asset to our little Pack!
  17. My husband, the CM, and I have been pondering something. There are two very good Troops nearby. Which should we go with when acquiring a Den Chief for our Pack? Are there any guidelines or rules that we should know about? If it helps at all....Troop 1 has a scout that attends our school (the school is K-8) and is a really good leader. Have talked in person with SM of Troop 1 (he helps run the monthly roundtable). Troop 2, a family in our Pack attends the church where Troop 2 meets and knows scouts from there, but we (any of the leaders) have never had contact with them.
  18. First, this topic really caught my eye! My family and I are HUGE HP fans! HUGE! Beavah, I couldn't have written a better post myself! Well done!
  19. Okay, so we (myself, and the Pack Treasurer), attended the first part of our district Join Night information meeting. The second part is in mid-August. It was a lot of information to take in. Being that this will be our Pack's first Fall Join Night, we were wondering what makes a successful Join Night? What have you found that works for you and what should we avoid like the plague? We have our parent that made a gorgeous PWD track bringing that, and the scouts will bring cars for other potential scouts to play with. We are getting a local Scout Troop to come and help us out too.
  20. For our new Pack, the monthly themes were a huge help for us. Plus, we went to Roundtable and got some really great ideas most of the time. Using the Program Helps just made it a no brainer for us, and took a lot of the stress off of planning each month. We are excited about some of the themes we have seen for next year and we already have incorporated a lot of ideas for them. I think you find what works for your boys. But, it is fun to have everyone show off the monthly theme things that they have done during Pack Meetings.
  21. Tami, thanks for the input! I will definitely be contacting her.
  22. Last week was our very first Cub Scout Day Camp for our new Pack to participate in. We had 5 boys go! It was hot, hot, hot, but tons of fun! I helped 2 and 1/2 days and another parent did 2 and 1/2 days. I was amazed that our boys were really, really good. They listened, shared, and helped each other out. Not that they were perfect, but they were really good. Some of the other boys in our same color group were not so nice with each other. And neither were some of the other group guides. So much so, that the DE had to make a comment during the morning announcements that parents n
  23. Hi there! We just had our "graduation" ceremony last Friday. We only had Tigers move to Wolves, and Wolves move to Bears. My husband, the CM, made a bridge. He wrote up something about the Tigers (and made mention of the Search, Discover, Share). He called each boy up with their adult partner/family. Gave his little blurb and had each boy cross over the bridge with his partner walking next to them. On the "other side" of the bridge, the parent took off the orange neckerchief and put on the new yellow one. CM spoke about the significance of the new color and what it will mean to be a wo
  24. Lisabob, thanks for the advice. We discussed this point also. We are also hoping to get someone that is willing and would like to attend trainings and roundtables. The person that just stepped down felt that training and roundtables were a "waste of time."
  25. Thank you all for the wonderful responses. We are going to contact our UC, DE, and our COR. I don't see that other than being concerned, our COR will have much input. Most of us, as leaders within the Pack, have a better idea of the type of parents we currently have. We also thought that possibly, having one of us hold the position temporarily until our Fall Join Night to see what other new parents become involved and may want (keeping fingers crossed) to take on the CC position. The CC's reasons were personal/career for leaving. More that she does not have the time to put int
