  1. I am going to completely hijack this thead. MY SON DID HIS PULL-UPS TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!! It only took from 8-10-2005 until tonight. He is going to have his SM Conference Monday and BOR right afterwards. He will either be going for Tenderfoot and 2nd class or maybe 1st class as well. There are several here that know of our problems with this requirement. One of the committee members was there this evening and said that he did 2 pull-ups. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can not tell, I am EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. I haven't read all of the replies but want to add my opinion anyway. My son has one requirement left and he will be first class. This requirement happens to be a Tenderfoot requirement. If he is held back even farther by the committee because they do not want to do all ranks the same night, I will tell them a thing or two that they do not want to hear. In my opinion there is no reason to hold the boy back after he has already done the requirements. Obviously he has been active or he wouldn't have them done.
  3. Gunny2862, No resolution yet. The lady who brought this to our attention hasn't gotten back with us. I am hoping that she will be able to give him an answer Monday at the meeting. If she does and it is in his favor, he will have his SM conference Monday and his BOR Tuesday.
  4. Lisa, In our Troop, the committee is pretty much the BOR. They have refused advancement because they didn't feel a requirement was done as well as it should have been. If they don't agree with the pull-up, they might not pass him. Yes, it has been 3 1/2 years since he crossed over. Beavah, I am not a registered leader, but I have offered. Hunt, I really hate to find another Troop. The Troop he is in is about 25 miles from the house, the only other Troop that we could consider would be the same distance (in good weather and about 15 miles farther in bad weather).
  5. I tried to post this last night and for some reason, it didn't post. Packsaddle, I agree that partial pull-ups might be hard to measure. But it isn't hard to say that half a pull-up is more than no pull-up. Especially when the scout has been told by 2 leaders in the unit that half a pull-up would be fine.. But then is told by another leader (committee this time) that they have to be full pull-ups.
  6. I found out tonight that our troop's policy on them is that improvement has to be by full pull-up not partial. Our SPL said he had no problem going with a hal pull-up, but that the committee would have to decide. I thought that things like this were up to the boys and not the adults. I am going to e-mail council tonight and see what they have to say. If they go along with half a pull-up being improvement over no pull-up, I have going to print it up and give it to the committee along with my application to be on the committee. When my son joined, my desire was to be an ASM. I found out th
  7. Our troops equipment is a broom or shovel handle over two doors. The SM has told him that if he can show him half a pull-up, he will pass it. My son did one pull up when he joined 3 years ago and has been unable to improve on that. The new SM can honestly say that he has seen him do 0 and then improve over 30 days.
  8. Doing a pull-up is the last requirement he has for Tenderfoot. But he also has all of the requirements for 2nd and 1st class done. When he does his pull-up, he will be ready for 1st class.(This message has been edited by kittle)
  9. and my husband and I were not needed to drive this year. This is the first year that he has went to summer camp that we didn't drive him (and several other boys) there. I am hoping that he can find somewhere to do a pull-up for his SM while at camp. If he does, he will be able to make First Class by the end of the month. He has been waiting so long. Even if he doesn't, I just hope he has a good time.
  10. I haven't taken the time to read all posts, but wanted to add my point on this. Tying knots gives my son a sense of accomplishment, he is good at knot tying. When a knot needs to be tied, they know my son can usually tie it. He has been in scouts for 3 years and hasn't yet made 1st class. Even though he is having trouble with a couple of requirements, knot tying makes him not feel like he isn't as far behind.
  11. My son was wanting to help start a web page for his Troop. What I was wanting know is there any free sites out there for him to start with? It isn't going to be anything fancy, but it was something that he wanted to try. Thanks for any info you are able to offer. I am going to have my son watch this discussion.
  12. Thanks for all the replies. I will share them with my son. Going to his PL isn't going to be an option (he is one of them). I'm not sure about the SPL, I will have to ask him. I will say that another Troop isn't really an option. We already drive 20 miles (25 minutes). The other Troop that would be an option is about 20 miles (and 30 minutes).
  13. cursing and carrying on? It is really beginning to bother my son. He says that they curse so much that it gets stuck in his head for a week or 2 after campouts. There are other things that bother him too, but he doesn't know what to do about them. I know that boys will be boys, but do they have to be rude also? I really like the things that Boy Scouts teaches my son about becoming a man. But some of these things are not how I am trying to raise my son. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
  14. First I want to say that there isn't an overweight issue and he has gotten serious about it for the last 2 or 3 months. He has been doing bench presses and arm curls to work on his arm strength. I suggested to him the method that Beavah described. We have an old swing set in the front yard that he can practice on. I also suggested that he ask them to start the count again. Now we will see if he is willing to ask. I also wanted to add that he has had 3 SMs in the last 2 years. We are hoping that this new SM will last, his son is crossing over in Feb.(This message has been edited by kittle)
  15. How would you handle this? For Tenderfoot rank, a scout is supposed to show improvement on pull-ups, push up, etc. My son told me that when they did the pull-ups the first time around, they were allowed to 'jump' with the first one. Now they are doing them in a different place and are unable to do this. My son (who is working at improving his upper body strength) is unable to show improvement because he can't do the one that he did before. Should he request that they start the original number again or just keep working at it. It has been almost 2 years. He is getting very discouraged and is be
  16. ScoutNut, He his homeschooled, so that isn't a concern. He is on a soccer team, but h=they are from another town all together. And of the boys in his youth group, only one of them is from our town, the others are from out of town.
  17. I was wanting my son to start in June so that he could attend Day Camp. I know that the Pack in our town(@ 2 miles) would take him whenever I want to son him up. They could really use the additional adults. But my husband and I haven't decided if we are going to sign him up here or in the town (@ 20 miles) that our older son's Troop is in. If he joins the Pack in other town then he will be able to crossover into Boy Scouts with boys he has been with for years. The local Pack has also only had 1 or 2 Tiger Cubs at a time for the last 3 years.
  18. My middle son will be old enough to be a Tiger next year. My question is: Do Tigers start in June or in August when the new school year starts?
  19. I started a post here on Monday night and ended up going to having to go sit with the baby. My son is going to be 13 next month and has been in the Troop for a little under 2 years. He is still Scout Rank. He has one requirement left for Tenderfoot (show improvement on pull-ups), 2 for Second class, and after this campout 5 for First Class. He has 10 merit badges completed and awarded, 2 completed to be awarded at the next COH, and 2 that he has only 1 or 2 requirements left. I keep pointing out to my son that all he has to do is show improvement on his pull up, but he has no strength in
  20. The Scout pays for their own camping fees each month. If the campground charges a camping fee, it is divided between all people who are going camping. The scout (or parent) pay so much for food. The gas is covered by whomever volunteers to drive (and pull the trailer). It is usually the same 2 parents that pull the trailer. They both have extended cab trucks, so they are able to help with transportation of boys also. We usually only have to take the SM's vehicle and the truck that is taking gear, Fundraiser money goes into each boy's account to pay for his summer camp and dues. I would ra
  21. Our council has a list of approved merit badge counselore. I obtained a copy from council shortly after my son crossed over to a Troop a year and a half ago. On the list that our council has, the counselor list which troop or troops he/she would be willing to work with. Some are willing to work with any Troop and some are willing to only work with their local Troop.
  22. I have to say that I am one of those that changed Packs because of the leadership. Actually, my son became a Lone Scout for 1 year until we were able to help get another Pack up and running. Sometimes it is the only solution. In our case, my son and I were neither one happy with the situation and he would have dropped out of Scouts if we hadn't done what we did.
  23. I have to say that a Troop out of your local twown can be a good thing. We only have one Troop in our County and my son chose not to join it. We went to an adjoining county and drive 25 miles to meetings. but it is worth it for my son. He is in a Troop of boys that he really gets along with.
  24. My son just recently (last month) met with the camping merit badge counselor. The couselor asked him to get his camping record from the SM or committee member that keeps track of this. I wrote the dates down, just to see how many camping days he had. He joined last Feb. March: 2 d/n April: 2 d/n May: skipped because of a family graduation June: no campout July: 6 day summer camp August: 2 d/n September: 2 d/n October: 2 d/n November: 2 d/n December: no campout January: indoor campout February: 1 d/n (weather brought them home, but that is another story) March: 2d/n
  25. The boys bring their gear to the church on thursday evening before the campout. They have a list of the gear that they are supposed to bring, a shakedown sheet. If they boy doesn't have it, he loses points for that campout unless he brings it to the campout and shows the SM. They earn points for attending the campout also. At the end of the year (in June), all boys who have earned the required number of points gets to attend the special campout. This year's special campout is Marengo Caves in Souther Indiana. The shakedown sheet insures that each boy has what is required. After the first
