  1. I think you were right to be distressed. The JASM sounds like a fine young leader with alot of potential. I feel he handled the situations very well. The loud mouthed assistant needs to be counseled immediately. If he will not change his ways, it would be best if he was asked to leave.

  2. Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. My camp was ok. We had to spend a few hours in the basement of the dining hall on Wed morning because of severe thunderstorms. We had a new cook at camp this year, but the food was ok. We are thinking about trying another camp next year just for a change of pace.

  3. Welcome to the forum. I wouldn't dismiss the scouting idea entirely. When I was a youth, there was a 16 year old that joined my troop for a year or so. He bonded with a couple of other older scouts in the troop and they had a good time.

Visit a troop, or call a few scoutmasters and explain the situation. You just might get lucky and find a troop with the right age mix of boys, and it may work out after all.

  4. I am sorry if I was not clear, I didn't intend to imply that the decision should be passed on, I merely meant that if the boy was indeed granted an extension, then honor it and help him complete his Eagle. I was simply stating that even with all the proper sigantures from his troop, he may encounter problems from the Eagle BOR and or national. The story sounds a little fishy to me, I was also under the impression that Eagle extensions were difficult to get, and had to document circumstances beyond the boy's control.

  5. Actually, I had my council exec tell me after the last jamboree, that he didn't care if we left our jamboree CSP on after 6 months, as he has the right to do. As to the wearing of jamboree commemorative CSP's by non-participants, that I was not aware of, thanks for the info. By the way, nobody wastes anybodys time by asking questions, that is what this forum is for. If you want to chew people out for asking questions on a forum for that purpose, please go elsewhere.

  6. You are getting into a grey area here. I've heard different opinions on this issue, the bottom line is that this is your council executive's call, you need to ask him or her for a ruling on it.

  7. You have to do what you think is right. If you feel you need to step back for awhile, then by all means do it. Maybe you will be able to come back again in some capacity once you have had a break. Pushing yourself now beyond what you are willing to do benefits no one. Good luck in your decision.

  8. Sounds like you are pretty much right on. Class 1 medical forms are only required for cub scout day camps etc..

Permission slips are probably not necessary if all parents are accompanying their scouts on trips. Driver insurance information is not needed if all parents are transporting their own sons. Travel permits are not needed when traveling locally within council boundaries, but you can always choose to go beyond the minimum. Some councils do require more than what I have stated, so I would enquire with your local council too.

  9. i am in a fairly small troop. We have adults coming and going all week at summer camp. We have to have the minimum of 2 adults in camp at all times, we usually struggle just to attain that. Any additional help we can get is great.

  10. Welcome, what an unusual situation. I guess the best course fo action is to let the boy work until August 5. If he completes his work, he will still have to face the Eagle BOR, and the delay will be noted at National. Either one may kick the whole process out.

  11. From the habitat you describe, and the description of the snake, it sounds like it could be your local sub-species of common water snake, they are dark with the vague kind of markings you describe. All snakes rattle their tails when disturbed, since they are frequently partially hidden in dry leaves etc, they will all make a rattling sound. All water snakes except the water moccasin are perfectly harmless.
