Have we bitten off more than we can Chew ?

First Pack I was in when I came back to Scouting...First Overnighter.....First Cub-N-Pal they Did Food for Cubs...Others were on their Own..Then First Overnighter we had It was Each Den was responsible for their own food..We all still sat around a Common Area and Shared S'Mores and Stories...How Ever after I brought out my trailer mounted BBQ Grill and they saw How I cooked it went to I cooked for everyone..I planned the meals and Families paid an Equal Share.Amazing how Much a Family can be feed on 20.00 each..

Surprisingly Now several packs and Troops are now Bringing out Trailer Mounted BBQ Grills.

We have an Official Snack food of the Boy Scouts of America now. I don't see why we can not have an Official Kilt

Why it is important to have A Legal Guardian along on anything you do. Scouting is No different any other aspect of Life..

Ever have a sleep over for one of your Kid's and allow their Friends over?

Ever go with one of your Kid's Sports team out for Pizza after that Big Game?

Ever have a Cook Out in the Old Back yard and Invite Friends Over?

Ever Take your Kid and some of their Friends to the Movies and Drop them off?

If you have ever done anything you have opened yourself to possible Law Suits.

Myself I try to enjoy life and share my Experiences with a Newer Generation of Scouters...Treat them like babies all their Lives and they will be.

Would I be worried about a Group of Cub Scouts at a State Park with their Families right next to my Camp Grounds....NO

Would I be Worried if I saw a Unit Leader with Young Blind Folded Scouters heading out into a Blizzard in the Alaskan Wilderness Barely dressed for Wilderness Training? Heck yes

I agree..Or Wear a Ball Cap and Put the Pin on It...Or on a Hiking Staff...Or a Lanyard worn Around the Neck...Or A Vest of Some Sort..All ways not to wear it on the "Official Boy Scout Shirt" and still wear it.

The Clan MacLaren Society of North America has established a special associate (non-voting) membership for any Scouter who has earned his or her Wood Badge. Wood Badge membership in the Clan MacLaren Society of North America (CMSNA) is therefore extended to all Wood Badge-trained Scouters who have completed their "ticket" and have received their Wood Badge beads. Pick up a membership form at the Clan MacLaren tent at a Highland Games. Or, download an application from here ( please include your Wood Badge Course Number! ).

Cost is 15.00 Per year to be a Member

 

There are five Patterns of Tartans That the MacLarens wear by the Way.

 

If the Scout is already an OA Member, yes the Service Hours can Count, if he actually Works and not Just Attends.Only if he get's Scoutmaster's Approval in advance.

If the Scout is not yeat an OA Member then No they don't count since the Labor is part of the Ordeal thus required for Membership.

I agree with DC' date=' OA is outside of advancement. Plus in my lodge, the only way to be able to buy lodge flaps is to do 7 hours of service work. So it seems like "double dipping."[/quote']

Anyone Can buy our Lodge's Flap..Current Members get a Discount.

I never let my boys count OA Ordeal hours for advancement because they were getting benefit (membership) from it. From where I sit the OA is something outside of the advancement chain once the membership requirements are met.

I wish my soon to be ex Lodge Did that....Once you Earn the Flap by attending Ordeal..all you Have to do is Pay Yearly Membership Dues and your a Member until you don't pay anymore..and when you do decide you want to call yourself an OA Member again all you have to do is pay the present year's Dues

I served as Archery RO for many CSDCs, and the last time, I was informed by the DCD that since the curriculum included all the Archery Pin requirements, the Tigers had participated, ergo, they earned the pin. When I pointed out that the curriculum was presented to me and I had not drawn it up, and that I did not ordinarily think that Tigers were mature enough to handle the equipment and the range as I would like a Pin holder to , I was told that was not germane, that if I followed the curriculum provided, every Cub would have earned the BL and the Pin. I told her that I thought the Pin should require more than merely participating and listening to my Scout assistants safety and history classes, that I would ordinarily ask Cubs desirous of the Pin to come to camp one day an hour early to help set up and stay an hour later to help take down, thereby fulfilling the requirement (which is "optional" it turns out) , I was told again that that was an "optional" requirement, and not necessary. Any Cub can (and will) earn the BL AND Pin.

So here is Cub Scouts, can't fail. In my previous camps, my DCD and I both agreed that the Pins required an extra effort on the Cub's part, that the BL might be "automatic", but not the Pins. Sic Gloria Mundi.

 

If your Cub (or their Den Walkers) bring back a list of "rank requirements and BLs earned", the responsible Cub Leader will review with the Cub what he actually remembers doing. The list may be overly optimistic. The curriculum may not have been followed. The Station Scouter may not have had time to do what he wanted to do.

Reward the Cub with what he earned, help him to earn the rest. The badge/rank will mean more to him, and he will learn to expect actually working for something he desires.

So you Changed and Added Requirements to fit your personal opinion of what has to be done.

Scouting has always been Once Signed off, it is earned...Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts.

Requirements for the BB Gun Shooting Sports Award Certificate

Certificates may be awarded to the Cub Scout or Webelos Scout at any time he achieves a level of marksmanship. It is possible to earn five certificates if every level of marksmanship has been accomplished.

Before completing the Pro Marksman requirements below, the following criteria must be met:

• Instruction: Complete a basic BB gun marksmanship safety course.

Earn the BB Gun shooting belt loop and complete five of the following requirements:

1. Explain the parts of a BB gun and demonstrate how to properly load the gun.

3. Develop proficient shooting techniques by practicing for three hours.
   
4. Learn the correct scoring techniques for target BB gun shooting.
   
5. Make a poster that emphasizes the proper range commands.
   
6. Draw to scale or set up a BB gun shooting range.
   
7. Show improvement in your shooting ability with an increase in scoring points.
   
8. Help make a type of target for the camp BB gun shooting range.
   
9. Show how to put away and properly store BB gun shooting equipment after use.
   
10. Explain how to use the safety mechanism on a BB gun.
    
11. Tell five facts about the history of BB guns.
    

Councils may provide extra opportunities for a boy and his adult partner to continue qualifying for a pin after the council camp experience is over. However, a certified range officer must be present for shooting credits to be valid.

Anybody remember having their Bobcat pinned on upside down, then once you did a good turn, your parent(s) would allow you to turn it right-side up? For some reason, I remember that being a tradition when I was a kid, but 4 decades have produced a fairly muddled memory.

We did that also..and Pack 1 Still does it. And It is done with every Cub Scout and Webelos Rank.

Sadly one of the Things that Hurts Cub Scouting is the Summer Break Thing....My Den we had Activities and Meetings Year around..although the Other Dens and the Pack took a Break. Scouts and Parents liked the year around meetings. We had our New Scouts and Parents ready for the "official September" Start of the year. Everyone else was behind. I Made certificates for everything My Scouters participated in..City Christmas Parade, Pack Lock in, Pack Camp Out, Popcorn Sales, etc...

As for Earning the BB Gun Belt Loop

Another thing..something I did..I put a Piece of Velcro on my Sash and Uniform to keep the sash from slipping down all the Time...Kept the Arrow upright and at a Good height all the Time.

When I was A Scout...I was in several Different Troops in Different States...In California in Hacienda Heights..We did a lot of Camping. In Fontana we did Camping..In Montclair we did Camping...We of Course Drove to those Camps...We had a lot of Adults go with Us.

When I moved to Sherman Texas..we did Camping..And Finally when I moved to Wichita Falls Texas We did Camping....All The Camping had one thing in Common...We drove from Urban Areas to "Wilderness Areas" such as State and National Parks, sometimes Private Property at Maybe Big Bear Lake, Time Did not allow us to plan long extended "Backpacking" trips.

Difference I see today is all the Limitations and Rules..and Fancy Equipment

We use to Climb Trees, Climb Rocks, Shot Slingshots, Slept in Old Baker Tents...We were allowed to run jump and play...no one Worried that we might get a Boo Boo..Today it is so Structured towards safety..there is Hardly no Fun

Don't Blame the Parents only for Helicoptering. BSA Encourages it....Back in My Day...You did not need all the Training required today to have Fun.

BSA is turning Sissy because someone might get hurt and they May get sued because over it.

I was hunting alone with a .22 and a 410 at 7

I was Camping out in a Pasture by a Stock Tank alone at 7 also. I built a A Frame Shelter, caught my own Dinner, cleaned it and Cooked it all alone.

Scouting in America does not recognize the Fact that Youth want to do outdoor stuff. I had Cub Scouts quit scouting because they could not Camp more, Could not Shot Guns, Could Not Climb Rock walls, Can't ride BMX Bikes..stuff they do outside Scouting.outside of Scouting.

I would say if I was a Youth Today I would quit Scouting and join a Outdoor Group that Does what we use to do in Scouting.

Wichita Lodge 35 does a Necklace...However nothing specifically for Brotherhood alone...However People forget to give them out and since they have changed over the years and run out of some beads or a style of bead is no longer available..We don't have a Guide for what they are given for exactly..

We got an Imitation Eagle Claw for Eagle Scout..Beads for Ordeal Member, Brotherhood, Vigil, Bead for Attending OA Events, Beads for participating in Pre-Ordeal, Ordeal, Brotherhood and Vigil Ceremonies, Beads for Each Principal Part (A,M,N,K) performed., Bead for Serving Lodge on LEC among things

I had Challenge coins designed but Lodge Advisers never presented to Youth to Vote on..4 Coins..One for Candidates who were called out..1 For Ordeal, 1 For Brotherhood and 1 for Vigil of Course..as an Incentive to stay active. Sad part was The Die was gonna be Paid by the Company (the Owner an A Former OA Member) and First 50 of each I was gonna pay for. So No Cost to the Lodge..and Yes they are a BSA Approved Licensee

No Idea...Lodge has not shared any Information...

Lodge's Turn out last Night to Spend Time at Camp with Them...1 Youth and about 12 Adults.....Out of 168 Registered Members..

I had more than that show up here at the House Because I was gonna be hosting them here and watching a Movie on the Front Lawn last night...until The Lodge came to the rescue

When I came Back to Scouting the Pack I was with had one...Everyone had a great time. I set up a projector and Sound system and We watched a Movie. We had the Local Fire Department Bring out their "smoke" house for Fire Safety and the Firemen Suited up for the Youth. Like Others we were fortunate enough to Have a Large Sponsor with Facilities including a Gym and A Kitchen.
