  1. Could be, or there have been changes since the draft you saw at PTC. For example, your had mentioned that the using EDGE to teach a younger scout a specific skill was for Star but now looks to be for Life.

I have mixed feeling on non-Eagle applicable PORs. For example, I wish Bugler was applicable for Eagle. I don't see the point in the LNT Trainer, wouldn't that just be a part of an Instructor's duties anyway?

  2. Here is a list of changes to the advancement requirement changes: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/2010RankUpdates.aspx

Tenderfoot A Scout must teach another person how to tie a square knot using the EDGE model (explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable). He must also be able to discuss four specific examples of how he lived the points of the Scout Law in his daily life.

Second Class A Scout must discuss the principles of Leave No Trace and explain the factors to consider when choosing a patrol site and where to pitch a tent. He must explain what respect is due the flag of the United States. He must again discuss four examples of how he lived four different points of the Scout Law in his daily life. He must earn an amount of money agreed upon by the Scout and his parents and save at least 50 percent of it.

First Class An additional requirement to the 10 separate troop/patrol activities states he must demonstrate the principles of Leave No Trace on these outings. He must discuss four more examples of how he lived the remaining four points of the Scout Law in his daily life.

Life A Scout must use the EDGE model to teach a younger Scout a specified skill.

Star, Life, and Eagle Troop Webmaster and Leave No Trace trainer are two new leadership positions.(This message has been edited by jet526)(This message has been edited by jet526)

  3. Best I can tell, it is a place to keep information about people that can help. For example, a scout may want to do an eagle project for Game and Fish. If he just calls Game and Fish he will likely get some one who can't help him and may not know who can. Eventually he works out that John Smith is the person to talk with. If you put this information into TM POC then the next scout can get the information from you. The same goes for who to contact about camp sites (the owner of the property) or rifle/climbing/whitewater instructors.

I wish my predecessors had used it. I suppose those that come after me would like it is I used it as well. Off the top of my head I can think of several people that I should add.

  4. Thank you. That helps. Likely construction companies, hardware stores, tool rental companies can help. Finding the post hole drill should be simple. Likely someone in the troop or church owns one. If not, check with rental companies. Explain what you are doing and there is a shot they will just loan it for the day. Depending on the fence, you may be able to get the materials donated as well. Home Depot and Lowes will generally only give a gift card. You need to make the request at the first of the month. They only have a limited amount to give each month and it is generally gone very quickly. Locally owned hardware stores will generally give you more, they also don't get as many requests. Ask to speak to the owner if possible. In either case, if you know that they have something you need that is shop worn you will more likely be able to get them to give it to you. They will end up writing it off at a loss anyway so they'd rather give it to you and include it into their charitable budget. Ask for specifics, ie. "Can you donate 20 fence posts?"

Keep in mind that you are not requesting donations for a Boy Scout project. You are getting donations for your church. If someone asks for a receipt it should come form the church. The church will also have to have a record of larger donations. Speak to the person who handles the churches finances to find out if there is anything special you need to do.

If you still need money. Rather than just putting out cups for change you will likely do better having a fund raiser were you sell goods or services. I rarely will leave change at some store, I will often buy an overpriced candy bar or pay to have someone to pull weeds at the house.

  5. 80 scouts with only quarterly BORs? Something sounds off here. If the troop is as described that would mean about 25-30 BORs in a single night. During a troop meeting one board might be able to handle 4 reviews. They would need about 8 boards with 24 adults (with no SM or ASMa). I have a hard time buying that.

  6. An important part of getting people to listen is to become a great listener yourself. Start off by trying to understand what the SM and committee were trying to accomplish with the change in the patrols. Find out if they believe that it is working. Unless your plan accomplishes the same things then it will be unlikely that they will listen to you.

Second, realize that just because it is your idea it may not be the best (I can think of a couple of issues right off the bat). Share with the SM the problems you see in the way things are being done and then ask him for ideas for correcting them. Here is were you might share an idea for addressing a particular problem and then listen to his criticism. Ask him for ways to change the basic idea so that it will work.

Third, revolutions rarely work. That is the way your first post and some of your second sound. You came up with ideas. You held a vote. Then you went to the SM. Try it the other way. Go to the SM. The two of you come up with ideas. Then present it to the troop to see if they like them.

  7. Never measured it but I have a 31" inseam and there was 5-6" extra. So about 36". You would need very long legs to run out.(This message has been edited by jet526)

There are some comments regarding ticket-like requirements for NYLT. There is no such thing in the syllabus

Thank you. I stand corrected and it is good to know that this is a local change. I thought the SM, like the WBCD, had to sign in blood that he would stick to the syllabus. They syllabus does have them developing a personal vision by the end of the course. They also are to "identify at least one goal leading toward realization of that personal vision". But post course follow up in our council is an add on. Now, I have to figure out what I should do about it.

  9.

The the comitee chair (former SM for this troop) did the swim test. Then When the boy brought his book to the SM, the SM told him that it had to have been conducted by a cert BSA lifeguard. So he coudlnt advance.

There is no BSA rule stating this. But the SM can limit the approved people to sign off on that requirement to BSA Lifeguards if he chooses. Why he would do that is a mystery. Does he have a plan on how this will be accomplished?

  10.

I am told that it was identical to WB except you don't do the ticket

There is something like a ticket. They have to write their vision for themselves and three goals to meet that helps them fulfill their vision. No hard deadline for completion and all they get is a certificate. I suspect that few officially finish.

  11. NYLT is very similar to Woodbadge. From what my son describes it has a bit less class time with more activities. There is a marked difference with many scouts who go. We had 2 scouts attend each of the last two years. This year we have 6 going.

I would suggest that you encourage all your up and coming leaders to attend next year. Hopefully your newly elected SPL will already be registered. We offer to reimburse our scouts $50 when they complete the course.

Like Woodbadge, it should not matter where he attends. Of course the SM and staff can do a poor or exceptional job but it may be difficult to know this before hand. Good luck getting him a spot. You are coming late and NYLT is being required by some councils for jamboree troop leadership positions so they may be full. You may be able to get him in as an alternate if someone cancels. You might check with your council if you have only looked the calendar. Ours is scheduling a 4th during the winter break.

  12. It would be nice to have one for Boy Scouts.

NYLT, NAYLE and Trainers EDGE for starters. Perhaps a stint staffing NYLT. I'm not sure what else. The only other "leadership" courses available are OA but LLD and NLS are not on par with NYLT.(This message has been edited by Jet526)

  13.

Oddly enough, the syllabus doesn't really use EDGE to present this material. It relies heavily on explaining, but doesn't do much demonstrating, guiding, or enabling. A rewrite incorporating EDGE into delivery of the material would really help.

hmmm....that was the structure of the course anyway. Lots of explaining early on. Some demonstration. Then guiding with the group and individual presentations. I suppose enabling is sending people forth to train. The structure is in there, course implementation may be another thing.

  14. I like the Camp Chef. The feet are fine if you are using it as a griddle, but I'd rather have a real frying pan. The thing I like most is the slot to insert a thermometer into the oven. No more guessing if it is done and opening the oven to check. The thing I don't like if the amount of lid decoration. It takes a bit more work to clean and oil.

  15. Most of that makes sense. If the red is worn by the CS then it would make sense for the adults to be the same. When the CS becomes a Webelos and opts for the tan uniform they are still in the CS unit so why replace the numbers? Just use the ones off the blue uniform. A fair possibility they will need to buy new green numbers in a year when the cross over. Why make them buy the green for a single year.

Than being said. I have a hard time seeing anyone make anyone go back an change their patches back. But if they do they will likely already have a set.

  16. Depends on your budget. Early I tried to personalize the gifts, but that became difficult to keep them comparable. So I started giving the pewter slide. But that was not particularly useful. Most had the embroidered necker and they don't work together. I was giving them the pewter belt buckle, but I've been told that the tang tends to break so I've switched to the enameled one ($16). Pens are nice, but better ones will run $25+ engraving. The one from Supply is a low end ball point ($13). Not enough youth wear ties any more so the tie tack is out. Same with cuff links. There are key rings for $6-$7 dollars.
