  1. When you're doing the simulation you have to remember that the person on the left side of each table is the chairperson. They need to have a strong connection to their positon (career wise). I also found that some people don't work on any commitee. BTW, does anyone know where they got the pictures for the community members that you draft? They're too small to be sure, but one looks like my SE.
  2. Has anyone's lodge ever made their own elections video? Do you think its a feasible idea that would help give a "local" perspective of your specific lodge?
  3. I really think the easiest solution for all parties is to sell the building to CoL. The city won't miss it as they have not used it for their purposes for quite a while.
  4. I'm a junior in college, majoring in public relations and double minoring in sociology and advertising. I explained to my adviser that I want to work in the non-profit sector, specifically the BSA and he inquired why I wanted to reside in a cardboard box. I didn't think there were that many other students/professors on the boards. Cool!

  6. I was recently hired for dining hall director for a camp here in NJ. I was previously involved in the program aspect of camp so the dining hall administration is entirely new to me. I thought I might pick all your brains as I begin to brainstorm ideas with the camp director and cook.
  7. I had a few Dining Hall/Food service specific questions (as we all know that food can have a big impact on the overall experience). What make or breaks a dining hall? What unique things have you seen that made you say "hey that's really cool/nice/helpful"? What ideas do you have that would make a dining hall the talk of the off season? Most of you are much more experienced SMs and CMs and so I appreciate your wisdom and experience.
  8. good points. like always caution and parental involvement is necessary.
  9. I know not everyone here is as into social networks like facebook and myspace, but a new one just launched this month for scouts and scouters. Its and international sight started in Romania (i think). but offers great networking opportunites. here's the link: www.scoutface.com my username is utschemallsannuk
  10. it varies quite a lot by section. but usually they are tons of fun. i highly encourage you to talk to a member of your lodge as they will know more about your specific section. its something worth going to.
  11. NE2A's conclave will be in June. For the first time in anyone's memory it is not being held at a scout camp, but a military base. The National Guard will be conducting all the training cells. take a look at conclave2006.org to see what else we are doing!
  12. I am looking for some great campsongs to use at summer camp this year. What are your (or your unit's) personal favorites?
  13. what section is he (you) located in? i'm in NE-2A. Cant wait to attend NLS, i've heard its REALLY good, but I've never been asked to go till now.
  14. Is anyone here going to the NLS at Camp Alpine March 31-April 2? (that's this coming weekend)
  15. I have never heard of this, but it sounds interesting. Could you post your results if you are successful? Thanks!
  16. where are you located? I am at Camp Citta in Barnegat, NJ (Eagle Nest Staff). my troop is also at ockanickon. Is TI open or is it still flooded?
  17. The camp I work at has all campers report to the parade field at the sound of the siren. The Program Director takes attendence no matter what the emergency is. If the siren in "flexing" up and down: Meanwhile the staff reports to the office where the camp director explains situation (fire, intruder, lost camper, etc) staff are sent out to certain parts of camp in 3's. When the fire/camper/intruder is spotted they return to the office. If the siren is steady and long: Staff reports to the aquatics area and begins lost bather procedures. In special circumstances when the c
  18. We have wooden benches at our ceremony site. All lodge members who do not have an excuse (ie culinary duty) are required to attend to show support for the candidates/new members. They sit for the majority of the ceremony, but rise and use the scout sign to retake the obligation. If you look through the brotherhood ceremony it is evident that bystanders are expected to be there. Nick
  19. sorry, the only way you can get that answer is in person from an OA member. Try asking someone from your lodge.
  20. Yes, individual lodges send contingents in the same way council sends contingents the jambo. Adults are allowes (it is a BSA event and the supervision is required). I have not actually attended one yet, so I cannot answer your question about seperate activities. Yours in the WWW
  21. Of all the terrible things that happened, most of them were freak accidents. In some cases preparation or adherence to the rules could have prevented certain incidents, but not for all. For example, the 8 year old girl who was killed at a scout camp in NJ was completely chance that it happened to fall. It was perfect weather, the tree did not appear to be about to fall, it was simply a freak accident. Although most scouts had a good summer at various camps etc. National BSA's reputation has suffered.
  22. Thanks for all the tips that are coming in. Next weekend is our fall ordeal and my first lodge event at chairman (outside meetings). I have already worked with the chief, advisor, and members of the team to build a group that will be attractive to arrowmen looking to join a committee and a better run team. We will have a ceremony exclusive cabin for the first time. We are working on developing a clothing item (hat, beret, t-shirt) that is for ceremony members only. We are allowing the team to focus only on ceremony related projects during the ordeal. We will start pla
  23. I am waiting for my lodge advisor to generate a list of new arrowmen in the lodge, i want to try calling them instead of snail mail. Heck, I'm willing to try anything!
  24. Does anyone have any tips, ideas or suggestions for increasing the size of a ceremony team? My lodge is small and we have various current methods, but they don't seem to work too well. We have each committee in the lodge present during jumpstart and the new members fill out a resource sheet and check the area they are interested in. The newsletter and werbsite always contain articles encouraging people to join, but we still remain in desperate need of people. We usually only have 5 people on the ordeal ceremonies team at a time (4 speakers, 1 roadie). Anybody have some interesting recru
