  1. "I really don't say much at home about what goes on at work."

I understand that Eamonn, 30+ years in a large metro fire department and I never talked about what happened at work and my family knew better than to ask.

    Ignorance is bliss.

And yes when you see the suffering of others you are constantly reminded that we are blessed.

  2. "Organizations that apply should demonstrate that they are competent to manage a program with low administrative expenses and that they do not discriminate with regards to who the program will benefit."

Well any organization that has membership requirements "discriminates" in regards to who their program benefits. Obviously a Troop or Pack doesn't benefit girls.

  3. I though some councils had a method to test out.

I have two new ASMs, both have boys in my troop and also in our pack. They spend a lot of time doing Scout stuff. Neither one would get much out of ILOS, one's an Eagle and the other a Lifer who is an avid outdoorsmen. Why not waste more of their time since they're not doing enough as it is?

I did have one ASM go last year who had no background in Scouting, for him it was worth the cost and effort.

  4. Nonsense Beav?

Right now thousands of small business owners (with more than 50 employees) are deciding how many full time employees are going to be reduced to part time or let go to avoid paying mandated health care or the associated fines.

"That's what financiers are lookin' at."

No that's what small business owners, who finance their own ventures are looking at.

  5. Backroads, I've been involved in Scouting for over 20 years. I don't consider it a "hobby" which is what you called it. Hobby seems to diminish the level of commitment one.

I've met and had to deal with more than a few professionals who seem to think that because they get paid they are better or more important than the Scouters. On the other hand the vast majority are good, hard working, dedicated people.

  6. My COR, CC and myself (SM) are all in agreement on one thing. Adults (registered members or not) are expected to live up to the Scout Oath and Law. Those that don't are shown the door.

If the issue is program related what do the boys and the SM want? And if other adults want a change is someone else prepared to take the SM job? We only appoint SM and ASMs for a one year term. That stops a lot of complaining,(This message has been edited by Eagle732)

  7. Our troop never runs a deficit. Unlike the federal government we can't print more money. If we don't have it we can't spend it. Instead we work for the money we need by holding fundraisers, and we only do as much fundraising as needed.

Your unit is $2,300 short, where did it go?

A Scout is Thrifty, time to tighten the belt.

  8. "The codes are not secret...they are listed on the Adult application...they are what's keypunched into the computer. Think of it as an "abbreviation" if that makes you feel less paranoid."

The codes are secret and meant to confuse Scouters. Same with having Gold for the top ranking of JTE, everybody knows silver is higher than gold in Scouting. All meant as a diversion to keep us from looking at the man behind the curtain. ;)

  9. We can't change the past, we can only influence the future.

I believe today BSA is doing a good job educating and preventing child abuse. I also believe they were in many respects ahead of the times with their files. The original sex offender registry.

  10. Assisted a 70 year old woman who fainted in church.

Placed the woman in the shock position (raised her legs)

    Communicated with the family.

Sounds like a good deed which any real scout would have done without expecting payment wether in the form of money or a medal.

This sounds more like a mom wanting to promote her son.
