Cubmaster headgear

A question for Cubmasters...

What hat do you wear with your uniform?

The uniform inspection form says to wear the "blue and gold visor cap." I have never seen an adult wearing one of those.

I usually go hatless, but on the occasions where we're uniformed outdoors I'd like to keep the sun off my head....

Looking forward to useful replies...

Tod,

I agree with Ken: I wear my BSA expedition hat when we're hiking or camping. I've never been overly fond of baseball caps or visors; they give no sun protection to ears and back of neck. My family is VERY fair, and I have always tried to invest in hats with the necker thingy hanging down.

A hat that blends with the uniform and provides good sun protection, IMHO, is the best example for the scouts than strict adherance to a uniform that may not be the "safest" for the activity.

Of course, that brings up the question of cotton...

I think I'll go find a bomb shelter now... :-)

I have always wore the old traditional campaign hat to keep the sun off my neck, ears, head, etc. They're kind of expensive though, but then I'm a sucker for tradition.

While I find the BSA boonie hat somewhat uncomfortable (no vents and no canvas strip to attach odd pins to..)

There are any number of khaki/tan boonie hats that will answer the mail. Have a Cub insignia (or the BSA FDL) embroidered onto it, and have fun!

Tod,

Greetings!

To follow what Featherbear had said....

The Aussie Scouting hat has changed since I purchased mine. My Official Scout Association of Austrilia "Johnson Hat" is a stiff wool with rolled up sides. However, they seem to have changes to a softer wool, like our expedition hats. Instead of a National Supply Center like we have, the Aussie Scouts purchase scouting uniforms through an outback sporting goods store "Snowgums" http://www.snowgum.com.au/ Their webpage does not illustrate the uniform, but has instructions on how to request their Scout Uniform catalog.

I should have picked a Blue Aussie Scout hat years ago, but they did have a blue died "Johnson Hat" with a white leather band. I think that gave way to their softer blue expedition hat in the picture you referenced.

Anyways... I don't know if anyone stated it. But if you refer to our www.scoutstuff.org catalog. Just this last week, under their new items. There are some nice Scouting Straw "Panama Hats" now being sold.

This can bring up a whole lot of conversation. I wear a outback hat with my activity uniform, and a campaign hat with mt official uniform. I do not wear any hat while at a scout function in a church. Not because Scouts says no but the house of our Lord says no. The boys wear a rank specific hat and that id the only hat allowed in our by-laws. Our by-laws also sate that the cubmaster is the only one to wear the campaign hat. However other adults are allowed any other official bas headgear.

Mr Bill Q,

I have one question: How are you going to encourge or enforce complaince with those by-laws?

Run the child out of the Pack because he is wearing the wrong hat?

Run the Scouter who comes in and has a campaign hat for whatever reason out of the Pack because he wants to wear it?

Given that the BSA Uniform Guide authorizes ANY Scouter to wear the campaign hat, it seems to me your bylaws take Uniform Policing to a new level :(

Inquiring minds...(This message has been edited by John-in-KC)

I generally wear the blue and gold baseball-style cap when I am doing outdoor activities. However, probably the only reason is because when my first son joined, the blue and gold cap was THE cap for scouts to wear, too. They didn't have a different cap for every rank level.

My younger son is very enamored of the rank hats, so he didn't want his older brother's blue and gold caps, so I acquired them.

Can you even get the blue and gold caps anymore now that the scouts wear the caps with the different rank badges on them?

"Using the rule that official BSA uniform gear is always official, I have a 1930's campaign hat made by Stetson (size 7 1/8) with the original BSA pin. Well worth the 5 points"

The hat isn't in question!

It's the head and what program the head is in.

What's it they say:

If you want to get ahead get a hat, if you want to get a hat get a head?

Of course the Sea Scouts are the only program that really uses the head -But we aren't going there!!
