How far does your Troop travel for Summer Camp?

Recommended Posts

What distance does your Troop travel for Summer Camp?   What's the maximum you've done?  The minimum?  How much of a role does distance play in the decision making process?

Last summer - 95 miles

Shortest - 14 miles

Longest - 1078 miles

We go where the boys want to go, mileage is only a cost consideration.

Our camp is 325 miles from home - about a 6 hour drive.

We want it to be far enough from home that it is different from a weekend campout, something the scouts can look forward to.

Do not want it close enough so that the helicopter parents can make daily or nightly trips to the camp to check on little Billy.

250 miles each way this year - about a 6 hour drive. We have two camps in that area that we frequent (Camp Whitsett and Camp Chawanakee in the Sierras), and we charter a bus. We also camp on Catalina Island at Emerald Bay, that requires a ferry ride. Total cost to the Scouts this year was $550.

For regular summer camp we only go about 7 miles away (believe it or not it is NOT our council camp) in part because it is close.  We have gone there for the last 15-16 years.  Part of the reason we like it is because it IS so close as we have had a hard time in the past getting people to be able to commit to a full week off, so we have parents/leaders that will trade mid-week.  It makes it easier to do that being so close.  It is also relatively cheap compared to other camps that I have seen the cost of.

We usually do a HA camp every summer as well and go to Philmont every third year (although we are missing next year because of a lack of interest  :( ).

Always. We rotate between in-council and out. Boys decide and we have a short list of recommendations which the Scribe keeps track of on a spreadsheet. It's 60 miles to our council camp. We've gone 1,800 miles before (rented bus). Cost is a factor but not the only one. If we go far renting a bus is preferred, but then we need to fill the bus in order to make the price point under $300 or so for the transportation cost. If we go far one year (and have a high transport cost) we usually go fairly close by (meaning no bus rental) the following year.

High adventure is usually done in conjunction with summer camp UNLESS it is a national HA base year. We try to go local or near by in those years to those who want to do HA and summer camp may do so. We usually find in those years most elect to do one or the other, not because of cost but because of time.

Council camp is 70.

High adventure is also every year, ranging from 200- 2000 depending in the destination.
