  1. The news from Chicago and Owasippe such that it is. Owasippe has opened for its 96 th consecutive summer. Per the agreement we have with our council and those who are attempting to purchase the land, because we have opened this year we are guaranteed the option to open next year for our 97th. As far as I know program is running fine though attendance is down somewhat with troops beginning to look elsewhere in anticipation of Owasippe closing. That will not happen if everyone would stand together in the fight but even in our home troops there is apathy. The Chicago Area Council is locked i
  2. Camp Owasippe (the oldest in the Nation) is still alive and well. http://www.owasippe.com/docs/ldrs_manual.pdf Many programs for all levels. Located in Blue Lake Township (directly accross the road from Camp Gerber) about ten miles east of White Hall LongHaul(This message has been edited by LongHaul)
  3. After a funfilled CSDC, and sending the Boy off to summer camp (both church sponsored and Scout), and after reading about "favorite camps" and "Huh?????"' I find myself wondering.... ...And what is the news from Chicago and Owasippe? Hello?
  4. LongHaul, What a sad saga. I feel sorry for your council and the camp. What a money-grubbing shame. I did notice an ad for Owasippe in the latest issue of Scouting magazine. I wondered what had happened, since I've been following this issue from afar (really, just through this thread). At 1,000 miles, Owasippe is a bit far for us to go. Best wishes for a successful summer or two - maybe a couple of good years will save the camp?
  5. Well as you last remember we had our vote and rejected the executive board proposed. The attorney for National read us the riot act and warned of dire repercussions for rejecting it a second time. The dedicated scouter of CAC submitted a list of proposed changes to the list of candidates that would satisfy the concerns of the CORs and MALs. As a result of the suggestions(?) Instead of changing the person slated to occupy the position of Executive Vice President to a candidate acceptable to the "masses" the position was dropped. Once approved the Board can reinstate the position and fill it
  6. And what is the news from Chicago and Owasippe? Hello?
  7. Ill cast my vote for Owasippe Scout Reservation, Twin Lakes Michigan. On Michigans Western edge just east of Whitehall north of Muskegon. Over 4000 acres of Scouting fun. http://scarlet_sassafras.tripod.com/id2.html We have Camp Blackhawk a dinning Hall camp with aquatics area on Big Blue Lake. We have Camp Wolverine an in site dinning camp where meals are delivered to each site. Aquatics is done in a pool for swimming and Lake Wolverine for boating. Fisherman will love this camp, fresh fish is a great evening treat. Both Camps Blackhawk and Wolverine offer loads of merit badge o
  8. Thank you for your message local 1400! I had the opportunity to visit Franconia and spend some time on that trip touring through the White Mountains NF. It was awesome! There are some exciting experiences available there and I hope the folks from the East Coast take advantage of them. Mount Washington in the winter would be a true challenge to anyone from the Rocky Mountain States. Back to the topic! The Michigan residents in the Owasippe community have contested the efforts by the Chicago Council every step of the way. The result of the September, 2006 National/Chicago Council a
  9. This is a very sad situation for all of scouting. Maybe thats why I see so much Owasippe stuff on ebay these days? Can anyone tell me if the camp is open during all this trouble or is it in "limbo"? jkhny writes 'dues to national declined 30% or more, council contributions dropped 40%, assets decreased by 30%, and adult leadership dropped by a few hundred'. Well, thats exactly what they want in order to show a need to sell! Plead poverty and get rich--thats what America has come to. My union recently had to go to arbitration over 1 percent for our collectively bargained wage increase! It sound
  10. Beavah, The annual meeting is set for January 27, 2007. National has already said that no matter what the outcome of the vote, our current SE (the guy who started the whole "we don't belong in the real estate business" "sell the assets and bank the cash") Jim Stone, will remain our SE until the Owasippe sale is final. This is the result of talks centering around buying out the SE's current contract and replacing him with someone not predisposed to selling all our camps. National has made it pretty clear they want the money in the bank. At a recent fund raiser brochures were passed ou
  11. 4 months since the last post. Here is an update. The Boy Scouts of America (National) has now directly operated the Chicago Area Council since June 1, 2006. The Nationally installed Chicago Council Directors have attempted to accelerate the legal efforts to achieve a sale of the Owasippe property as quickly as possible. Critical, it appears, that the Court action be completed before there is a chance that members of the Chicago Council can vote for a Board of Directors. The Circuit Court effort blew-up on the faces of the National and Chicago Scout Executives. In c
  12. The Owasippe Staff Assoc invested $5,000 this year into the restoration and upgrading of the Stephen Fossett Sailing Base Outpost? The fleet is now up to 13 vessels with two more on the way by the Spring of 2007. The volunteer base in CAC has not given up on Owasippe and continues to provide an excellent program. Our troop has attended every year since we formed. Owasippe also offers a challenging High Adventure Program of hiking and canoeing in the Manistee National Forest. LongHaul
  13. My troop was possibly interested in going to Camp Owasippe summer 2007. It sounds like a terrific camp, based on the brochure. Having been to camps in councils that were having financial difficulties, can someone who has been there in the last couple years speak to the condition of the physical facilities at the camp? Thanks
  14. Well, it's update time again. Is someone doing the outline for a novel yet? The rank and file Plaintiffs won against the Council in Court concerning illegal governance by the Council President and Executive Committee. Council went ahead and filed in Appeals Court. National sent representatives in an effort to "mediate" and to get the parties to make nice with each other. Rank and file Plaintiffs informed National's representatives that it wasn't likely that they would settle anything since they had already gained a decision in their favor. National was sort of "blin
  15. ASM59, Look at what Owasippe Scout Reservation has to offer. It is located in White Hall Michigan which is about 200 miles from Chicago. From the Adventure Patrol for the first year camper (scout or tenderfoot) to the outposts for the senior scouts that are looking for a day or two away from the troop, we offer a good program. LongHaul http://scarlet_sassafras.tripod.com/id12.html http://www.owasippe.com/docs/ldrs_manual_06.pdf
  16. I've been on rifle ranges many times without permission when they were not operating, but it's not the same thing (I was also a range safety officer at Camp Perry). If you can't see that, I can't explain it to you. Nobody ever got drowned on a waterfront beach as far as I'm aware. As I mentioned, there was nobody on the waterfront except us and the staff. I have walked onto "their" waterfronts many times without "their" and that's the only one I've ever been chased off of. I'm sure that Owasippe has a great safety record and I have never been to a Scout camp where there has been a water
  17. Kahuna, Im a little surprised at your post. Being a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor you should know better than to enter a restricted water front area without permission and being a Scout Leader you should know better than to enter a water front without posting buddy tags on the check in board. I worked the water front at Camp Owasippe and at the very beach you were on but when it was Camp Wilderness before it was renamed Camp Blackhawk. Camp Owasippe has been in service since 1911 and we have not had any, not one, water front fatality we are proud of that. If you read a post
  18. There will always be adults and older kids who think you have to have plenty of rules to make things run properly. I think Eamonn has hit the proper balance. I've always felt we should have as few rules as possible and enforce them with enlightenment. It is not the end of the world if a Scout travels out of uniform. Waterfront personnel are usually the worst offenders. Some years ago, we took our troop to Camp Owasippe. We had a wonderful experience and just loved all the staff we came into contact with. One exception. We went down to the waterfront to respond to a request for adul
  19. Jr56, This has been an ongoing struggle since CAC hired a new SE. In case you dont know the SE has to be selected from a list National provides. The first thing our new SE did was to form a committee to study the "need" for CAC to own real estate for camping purposes. The second thing he did was to re district the entire Council. All the old established district committees and groups were broken up and realigned. While the new districts were shaking hands and getting to know who was who and repopulating all the District committees and Commissioner Staffs our camps were listed for sale.
  20. Here is an update on the Owasippe property status. The Blue Lake Township Planning Commission voted to not recommend the residential rezoning proposal of Owasippe advanced by the Chicago Area Council. The issue now goes forward to the Muskegon Area Planning Commission for review and, following that, to the Township Board. There are several more months of consideration before the rezoning proposal has a final disposition with the Township Board. The Township Planning Commission based their recommendation on extensive research and public comment. More than 2,600 people expressed the
  21. When fighting an uphill battle, it's always easier to walk away than continue the fight. That's exactly what some would like to have happen. Working from within is difficult, and can be very frustrating. There's no reason that Scouters such as jhk can't come here for some venting and support. A few of us, at least, are probably happy to read what he has to say. If others aren't, just click on to the next topic. BSA does many things very well; they also do a smaller number of things very badly. Internal control appears to be one of those less fortunate items in at least some parts o
  22. When things started going wrong at our Camp Owasippe (the Council pulling similar stunts), the CAC decided they "needed" to sell the camp, despite the amount of offers of help ($ for repairs & workers to do it for 0), and now we are in the battle to keep this camp... Hope all works out for you. ScouterHelen
  23. I would also like to know where this kind of Scouting HIstory can be found. I know Chicago's number is 118 and thought it was one of the oldest. I don't recall ever hearing that we merged with anyone. We did change our name at one point from Chicago Council to Chicago Area Council to reflect that we covered more than just the city proper. I do know that our Camp Owasippe was formed in 1911 by the Chicago Boy Scouts. I don't however dispute the title of oldest council, I think Trevorum and Miki101 should be givin a "Class A" salute. Remebering where we came from helps us retain who we are
  24. Jschlich, I too have no expectations that a new Board of Directors will succeed in rescinding the sale agreement. My hope is that we will prevail on January 14th and a new Board will be faced with a united community opposed to the sale made up of people local to the camp and those registered CAC members here in Chicago who know the value of retaining our last piece Nature. So as not to seem duplicitous I must state that you are far more concerned with the residents of Blue Lake Township et.al. that I am. The impact of the re zoning and sale to the local community will be nothing les
  25. LongHaul - I accept your point as you present it. Yes, there are many actions by the Council Professionals and the CAC Board over many years that are felt to not be in the long-term interests of the rank and file of the Council. I can accept that the decisions concerning the sale of the camping properties may have been the "straw that broke the back of the volunteers." The difficulty I have in recognizing the lawsuit in Chicago as "two fronts of the same war" are several. First, I have no expectation of a new Board to be able to dismiss a sales agreement for the property by a vo
