  1. I fully confess to bein' a conservative old coot. I think a lot of newfangled notions are derived from just sloppy, emotional thinking. That bein' said, I hope I'm always opposed to the notion of banning. I don't see that it has any good place in a free society. Banning books is one of those things. If your ideas are so weak that the only way they'll convince anybody else is if there's no other ideas allowed, then your ideas should probably wither and die, eh? But really, that same principle applies to everything else, too. A few people abuse firearms, either in anger or in stupidit
  2. This is identically posted here in Venturing and at OA. If you have practical experience in implementing the Corps Of Discovery program within your Crew, District, Council, or higher, please PM me so we can converse offlist. Eagle son (also a Venturer) just called me from one of our Scout Reservations ... apparently our Council VOA is contemplating rolling out COD. YIS/ICS/IFAW, John
  3. Humanity has much to answer for to God. Slavery. Women as chattel. Wars because we can and could. Lebensraum. Your race is worth your dying for. Even so, at the level of Joe Citizen, do we really value human life as we once did? Is the concept of morals by government without absolute points in bedrock (law from God) really working?
  4. It seems to me that the World Citizenship is really just a condensed version of a high school government and economy class. It doesn't seem to stretch beyond the mundane stuff that the scouts will eventually have to learn anyways. I'm part of a group that host World Citizenship badge workshops as part of our outreach to the community. How could we make it more meaningful for the scouts? They seem bored. I would be.
  5. Hi, all, I've been asked to be a MB counselor for Citizenship in the World. There is a requirement that has me somewhat confused. I hope someone can help me out a bit. Requirement 1 a says, "Answer the following: What is citizenship? How does one become a citizen in the United States? How does one become a citizen in other countries?" The MB pamphlet doesn't actually talk about obtaining citizenship in another country. Should I have the boys choose a couple of contries to research and learn what their citizenship requirements are? I did note that Requirement 1b askes how citizenship i
  6. Friends, Am seeking input from fellow counselors for Citizenship in the Nation. I'm revising my own materials to support my counseling. Requirement 2 is the "Go and do" requirement. You can read it in BSA requirements, at usscouts, or at meritbadge.com if you've not updated recently. It's the OLD requirement 4, but with TWO activities, not one. Here's my question. Using no more, no less as the standard, how do YOU interpret the options offered in 2a-2c? - In other words, would you accept a Scout (in my case in the KC metro area) who does 2b twice by visiting the Kansas
  7. One of the Aims of Scoutin' is to develop fitness. Been thinkin' about this lately. For an aim, it certainly seems to be undervalued. Let's face it, no kid is goin' to develop fitness in a meeting, and especially not if it's only once a week. No kid is goin' to develop any reasonable level of fitness in a weekend per month, either. Aren't we foolin' ourselves? Wouldn't we be better off just sendin' 'em to soccer or hockey? (Don't their parents recognize this, and do this anyway?). When you look at Advancement, only Tenderfoot has a (relatively lame) fitness component. O
  8. I would like to address an issue that most Venturing Leaders are familiar with, A Venturing Honor Society, similar to the OA but where Female Venturers and Male Venturers that have not been in scouting before and probably not members of the OA, I think because of a sense of fairness that BSA should let a Venturing Honor Society be started, it could be set up similar to the OA, and be youth led and the youth could be nominated by the members of their crews and ships,I am wondering if any one else feels this way too and what their response would be to this, maybe some people up in the Venturing
  9. Is it time for Venturing to have a Honor Society? And How could one be formed? Would using ideas from Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity. Any ideas?
  10. 9 A)Attend a World Jamboree. Could you not count National Jamboree for 9 B) Take part in an international event in your area since there were scouts from around the world there. If my memory is correct there was even an international day.
  11. About 10 years ago, when I was just getting into Scouting with my kids, someone at work showed me a paper that had the requirements for citizenship in the universe. This was b4 I could really appreciate the fun of it. It had requirements like: create life and show something... I can't remember hardly any of it. If anyone has a copy of this, please send it to me!! thanx bd
  12. This is not really related to scouting, but then again maybe because this is how the boys are being treated at school. My middle school child was sick earlier this week, stomach virus that is going around. When he returned to school on Wednesday I reminded him to go to the restroom as often as possible to avoid any "accidents". He then informed me that they are not allowed to go to the bathrooms between classes. The bathrooms have been locked! I called the school to clarify. This is a public middle school of 800 students in a middle class neighborhood, we don't have gangs of kids roa
  13. Eagle Nate here, At our last committee meeting, the adults and I developed an idea, in which we use the Cit. In the Comm. Merit Badge to fundraise. What we do, is you map out several historical locations in your general area. You provide transportation for all scouts in your District, for a price of about $2.50. You transport them to these different locations, and have a counselor at each one teaching the requirements. This can also be used for the Webelo Citizenship badge they can earn. We were going to set up signs and bulletins in scouting newsletters to infrom scouts a
  14. Well, I'm jumping into Boy Scouts with both feet as my son crosses over. I volunteered to teach Citizenship in the Nation at the next Merit Badge College/Day. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of some games to keep things moving and interesting. Dividing the boys up into teams like in College Bowl and have them answer questions.
