  1. The FoS presentation goes right after the Eagle mentor has a pin placed on his uniform.
  2. Basementdweller wrote: "had a neighboring Scout Master APPOINT his first year Grandson to the OA. he was a tenderfoot." Anyone who's seen a similar situation, how did the election team/chapter/lodge allow it to happen? What, if anything, was done about a scout who was "selected" without meeting the requirements or even having actually been elected by the members of the troop?

    Uniform (rant)

BadenP: I respectfully suggest you reread the original post. Nowhere was it said that anyone yelled at the boys. Also, the election did continue after the team checked the uniform exchange room for pants.
  4. If the OA disappeared right now, there's one major consequence that immediately comes to mind. Tens, if not hundreds of thousands of man-hours of work done at council camps during ordeals and lodge/chapter service weekends wouldn't happen. Oh, and don't forget the OA High Adventure programs helping to improve Philmont, Sea Base, and Northern Tier.
  5. #10 cans w/ TP and kerosene are no longer allowed because of the Guide to Safe Scouting: "Prohibited chemical-fueled equipmentEquipment that is handcrafted, homemade, modified, or installed beyond the manufacturers stated design limitations or use. Examples include alcohol-burning can stoves, smudge pots, improperly installed heaters, and propane burners with their regulators removed."
  6. Scoutfish - All levels for packs require meeting 10 of 13 requirements and getting a certain # of points. If the camp participation minimum can't be met, it won't prevent your pack from earning the award.
  7. Basementdweller - the Annual Assessment is the JTE scorecard. You get points just for filling it out.
  8. I'm pretty sure it was taken down. I haven't seen the link for it in over a month and it hadn't been working right for quite a while before that.
  9. According to the Insignia Guide, "Only the most recently earned Quality Unit emblem may be worn." So if a unit earned the award in 2009 but not 2010, there's no reason to remove the 2009 patch from the uniform.
  10. "If you are an Arrowman, yes your primary duty is to your unit, so normally you don't wear the sash. But if you are doing something OA related, or attending an event that the OA is working and you are helping out, then by all means wear the sash." That's pretty much what I meant, but I guess I didn't express it well enough. It also seems like an earlier point I made was lost in the discussion. Once an Arrowman, always an Arrowman, so whether or not someone has paid their lodge dues has no bearing on if they can wear their sash. As to when to wear the sash, ultimately it's a per
  11. SeattlePioneer - If you were doing one of those activities as part of your lodge's program to support Cub Scouts then by all means wear the sash. In the role of Cubmaster though, personally I don't think it'd be appropriate. If you feel more promotion is needed for Boy Scouts, maybe the local troops need to do a better job at marketing their program to the Cubs.
  12. SeattlePioneer - Just to clarify, because you successfully completed the Ordeal you are entitled to wear the universal arrow ribbon on your uniform and the sash when appropriate for the rest of your life. Being a dues-paid member of your council's lodge entitles you to wear the pocket flap to show membership in the lodge. If your lodge is interested in helping support the Cub Scout program, the Northeast Region has developed some great material, available at http://northeast.oa-bsa.org/resources/cub-scout-resources.
  13. I can't find anything saying it's not allowed. My gut says that if he completes all of the requirements, he has earned the rank. However, you might want to check with your district's advancement chair to make sure we haven't overlooked anything.
  14. My opinion is that every OA member currently registered in Scouting should be a dues-paying member of their council's lodge, even if they are unable to be active in lodge activities. Remember, an arrowman's first obligation is to their unit. However, your dues can help support lodge programs such as camperships, improvements to camp, etc. if your lodge does such things.
  15. I don't think it will hurt anything either. I think some of us are just used to appointed youth being called committee chairmen and not chief of something because that's the way our lodges do it. You say hoagie, I say sub...
  16. The same camping requirements for youth apply for adults. They are: "After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps." I would count an NYLT course split up over two weekends for a yo
  17. SeattlePioneer - If the Cubmaster's primary registration is with the pack, then he is not currently eligible for nomimation to the lodge adult selection committee. The full guidelines for adult nomination can be found on page 21 of the Guide for Officers and Advisers found at http://www.oa-bsa.org/resources/pubs/. Encouraging CS scouters who are already members to become active again though is a great idea.
  18. SR540Beaver - It sounds like your lodge's Vigil Chief is a committee chairman with a nice title, not that there's anything wrong with that. If anyone in your lodge has a problem with the process being youth-run, point them to page 31 of the Guide for Officers and Advisers which spells out pretty clearly how the nominating committee should be set up.
  19. Oak Tree - How is withholding information from scouts about available opportunities helping them in any way? There's no reason any of the activities you mentioned have to be turned into troop events, but I think it's a disservice to the scouts if the information about them is dumped in the circular file.
