  1. I understand your answer, but these are friends that I have had for years. Not just aquaintences, but best of friends. There would be no problem to have them register, but as I said, I was just curious.
  2. curious about scouting activites. If the scouts are going on a campout with the correct number of registered adult leaders, and some adults that are involved with the C.O (a church) have asked to go along, do they have to be registered members of the BSA as well? I was just curious.
  3. we have a scout working on the cooking MB. I am relatively new to scouting and we are planning a bacpacking/hike overnight. Does anyone have a good resource for recipes for hiking/backpacking outings. Requirements for the MB say prepare 3 meals for yourself and 2 others. I am guessing that it could get heavy. What do you guys recommend for food to carry? Thanks for any help you can give. MKH
  4. that is some great info on the difference between internal and external. I have only really been on 1 12 mile over night hike and used an external. My son also used a Jansport Scout that I got for him. We both loved the way we could just bungee tents and sleeping bags onto to top and bottom frame and GO! No problems. I did see alot of the boys using internal frames that were setup to use for adults. They just didn't look comfortable.
  5. I am looking for an external frame backpack for an adult. Can anyone give me a recommendation for one that they really like. My son is using a jansport scout and really likes it compared to the internal frame packs, so I thought I'd go external as well.
  6. found it in case anyone is interested..... http://www.llbean.com/cd-1/48826.shtml
  7. someone a couple of weeks ago, posted a link to a collapsable daypack. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anybody remember that post? I'd like to look at that pack closer. Any help will be greatly appreciated. MKH
  8. I guess it was the participaton patch....
  9. my boys got theirs this weekend.....I'll be danged. It had a made in China sticker on the back. At least the colors were Red White and Blue MKH
  10. I take offese to you assuming that we are "scalping" for as high a price as we can. We see an opportunity to raise money (maybe 2 bucks a parking spot, we are surely not getting rich) and have an informational table set up to show folks some of our scouting activities. This is something that the boys are excited about and I can assure you that we will not be begging. We live in a community that enjoys helping out any organization like boy scouts and girl scouts. Feel free to keep your nasty opinions to yourself! I do welcome any other helpful comments though.
  11. ...well, not really parking them, but directing them where to park. We have the opportunity to do this for an event that is happening in our town. The fundraiser will be for our troop only (not the district). My question is: is this a fundraiser in which we could wear uniforms, or should we stick with the class b tee shirts? cg
  12. Ok.... the boy just got home from a campout and said that he was elected to the Order of the Arrow. Can someone give a dad (ME) the rundown of exactly what this is? I know it is an honorable distinction, but am not sure what he is required to do or resonsibilities it carries. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
  13. Camp a total of at least 20 days and 20 nights. Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. The 20 days and 20 nights must be at a designated Scouting activity or event. You may use a week of long-term camp toward this requirement. If the camp provides a tent that has already been pitched, you need not pitch your own tent. " The above states you can use a week of long term camping towards the requirement. If a scout goes to camp 3 different years can he count a week each year, or do you only count it once? THanks for any help you can give.
  14. Hello everyone. I am in need of some guidance. My son is in a small troop (7 boys). We have a scoutmaster who has been with the boys for about 2 years. His work schedule has changed and it is hard for him to be at the troop meetings as well as a lot of the weekend events. There is an awesome assistant, who is serving as committee chair but basically is acting SM while the SM is out. THis chair knows more about scouting than I will probably ever know. There is also a guy in the assistant SM position, but I never hear him say a word, and I get the impression that

we've used: Saddle up your Horses (The Great Adventure) by Steven Curtis Chapman and Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves for many a slideshow. Good, high energy songs.
  16. sent you a private message. Thanks
  17. any idea if that book is available on line
  18. I had a den leader ask me if I knew of a wall chart that existed, that the boys could hang on their wall, and mark the loop/pin requirements as they get them done. No better place to look for advice than here....so.....does anyone know of a chart I could print out? MKH
  19. while we are talking backpacking....have any good tips for food? It is only a one nighter, but would like to eat good!
  20. thats what I thought. I had wrapped some straps around the bag, thru the loops, but when my son tried it on, it hung way down. I guess that is because the rest of the pack was empty. I will assume that when he gets the pack loaded, it will support the bag that is hanging off the back better? MKH
  21. question for Barry... you seem to have knowledge about this pack. How exactly do you attach the sleeping bag?
  22. http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?memberId=12500226&productId=9084 Just to avoid any confusion, here is a photo of the pack. It is the jansport scout. The bar I am speaking of is the top bar that goes behind the head. I was just confused if it really went right behind the head, or behind the neck. By the way it fits my son, I am sure it goes behind the head, but I just wasn't sure how high it should be.
  23. greeting scouters.... I have a question about my sons external frame backpack. I have been reading on how to adjust for the correct fit, which I think we have done. The pack has a bent tube, that is positioned behind his head. I guess I am not sure what this piece is for? Is it so he can pack something on top of it, and this rod will keep it from hitting him in the head? Or is this piece supposed to be closer to his neck? Sorry for the vagueness, but I'm not really sure what I am doing. We've been looking for some photos on line, but havent seen any where I can see this tube on the pack
  24. great..... I look good in khaki!
  25. I wouldn't mind to wear one at all. I just didn't know if a committee member is an "official" adult helper like the scout master and assistant scout master are.
