  1. Hi Barry,

At this point its a work in progress. Primus has worked closely with the "Riverfront Development corporation", they have allowed the use of the area for many non-profit programs. He has lined up professional timing so that serious runners can report this score. There will be a start finsh archway, route markers (possibly with sponsors names,) water stations, first aid, music and other sub committees. (We're planning on support from individual units who are not going to be running.)

Since we're running the waterfront there will be few traffic safety issues.

Looking it appears that I didn't provide a good weblink. Try:

I'm also reposting to the open discussion forum.

  2. Our venture roundtable chair came up with the idea of a 5K/1 Mile Fun Run as a fundraiser for our district.

Please feel free to pass it along to runners, Scouts, scouters or anyone else who might be interested in participating in or sponsoring this event.

Wilmington is revitalizing a 375 year old waterfront (Including the Russell Peterson conservation area) and we hope to bring people w/ an interest in supporting scouting (or running) out to this neat location. (We will be running on the riverfront boradwalk, not in the nature area!)

  3. I've been serching for clip art of the Venture Roundtable Commissioner's patch -- has anyone actually seen on in a clipart library? I have 4 clipart books and have checked USSSP with no luck.

I'd prefer a photographic version but any assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bob

  4. Am I missing someting or is the aisle not wide enough for the US & Church flags to process together? (For some reason that seems to simple but we present the Us, Papal & 40 other national flags every Thanksgiving they go up the aisle 2 by 2 w/ the US & Papal first, all are posted together when the last arrives in place.)

  5. Be Prepared to have a blast.

The training is excellent & the fellowship is fine. Can anyone tell me if our Christmas lights are still making the rounds? They started as a fun night light for a 3 year old, but were already strung inside another tent as we left for a little more festive tent illumination.)

The rug is a great idea, we took a U of DE flag (Go HENS!) and I do think people stopped by just to say DELA-where? We had great time and the car really worked out for us.

  6. A tiger Den leader recently commented that she was using a hand drafted advancemnet report for her submissions to the Pack Advancement Chair. I'll be reruening to life as a Cub leader next year and am curious has anyone developed a spreadsheet for tracking the Tiger electives. I know that the Leaders book has a 10 X 10 grid for #'s & dates but my friend relates that she has to highlight each months addtions to make it user friendly.

    Help!

  7. As a retail clerk (supermarket checker) in high school I learned quickly that every male preferred "Sir" and almost every female accepted "Miss". No surprises there.

In our unit adult leaders are addressed as Mr. or Ms. / Mrs. (Heaven knows what they call us when we're not "ear-round"!)Bob

  8. Its great that these threads (questions) resurface as new people join the campfire. Every unit should try to maintain a current library of the Eagle Required badges and those that the unit has found most popular. The books are a great resource; but just that. I think that its very important that counselors keep abreast of current requirements.

Last Fall I had a scout ask me why his counselor was using the old book -- the counselor is now using the currrent book!

More recently one of the lads who was checking our library for a book (Physical Fitness, I think) mentioned that we had several with different covers. When I wondered aloud why that might be he took the bait. We now have two sections of the library -- Current and Historical. (The old ones are great discussion starters -- I've a 16 yr. old who wants to know why he can't do masonry -- his uncle used to mix mortar for his father-in-law on the weekend & had some great stories.)

Backstop your Merit Badge book library w/ the latest edition of the "Boy Scout Requirements" book for $3.50. (Its got ALL the requirements but no additional info. #B33215 -- you know the one w/ the badges of rank displayed across a yellow to green cover .)

I've noted before that many units purchase books when they try a merit badge w/ the whole patrol or troop, other libraries grow as individual scouts earn a badge on their own and donate the book to the troop / crew when they've completed it.

  9. Ahhhh! The safari jacket. You know the belted one that I wore for three years in the early 70's it was great! I don't remember a single visit from the uniform police though someone usually reminded me to take it off at the beginning of each meeting (and for the last year I was SPL) Yes the safari jacket could be just the ticket.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

  10. http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=41254#id_41254

The thread above has several lists. I used the search tab in scouter.com to searc www.scouter.com for the word patrol in the entire text by date range. I think that there was another thread earlier in the year because I thought that I shared "Metallic Box" and the "Horny Toads".

Eamonn you wouldn't be familiar w/ the Black Box in Galway Would you? My son & I caught the Saw Doctors there in July --- awesome!

  11. Hi,

just some random thoughts.... Meritbadge.com (Not Meritbadge.org !!!!!)

    Scout handbook

Ernest Thompson Seton comes to mind real fast.... great artist visit the museum / library at Philmont. ( Perhaps just from an awarenees pt of view for the badge.

Waite Philips & other "land" donors check your local area. a nearby S(cout) R(eservation) might be part of an envirnomental land preservation program set aside or at least a "Stream Watch" site.

  12. NeilL,

I'm not sure that FSKEy had anything to do w/ the melody. I'd have to check my history vs. folklore file... often lyrics are written independenty of the actual tune but dependentupon meter or time. Try sining the words to any ballad to another ballad's melody.

  13. Oh, I forgot to mention that at most of the camps / camping activities that I have attended the "Cracker Barrel" was a meeting w/ the camp leadership on the night of checking to review the expectations, ground rules & opportunities for the period of the encampment.

For example a religious retreat is scheduled at a council camp...

on Friday night the council reservation camp masters meet with all unit leaders (How to contact Camp personnel in an emergency, where one can obtain potable water, restrictions on lavatory access (youth protection, femaler leaders, etc) hours the trading post will be open

and the retreat masters meet with the leaders of those units participating in the retreat re the last minute announcemnts re agenda. ( They might have spoken to all to invite others to attend. )

But as someone else mentioned... most importantly it is a chance to visit w/ others & share important information.

  14. Photography. Rocky, our Asst. Scoutmaster worked for a film developing company in the 60's & 70's & would announce the date for a trip to his workplace a few months in advance. A couple of us worked on the reqs, my story line was "first aid for a broken arm', we shot our photos & before we went to the shop on the appointed morning Rocky had us each shoot another roll of 12 pictures. We developed the last roll, as required; Rocky ran our storied pictures through the automated eauipment but allowed us to view, enlarge etc & press the print buttons after the film wound its way from the developing tanks to the printing station.

A great experience overall. Although at every meeting he never pushed us, we had to go to him when we thought that we were ready no deadlines except the trip. Sometimes we'd check w/ each other & all meet w/ him other times individuals would catch him on their own at a troop meeting. Everyone was done their story at least a week before the trip.

  15. Saltheart, in most american frontier town there probably where a variety of "hard drinks" depneding upon the culture of the settlers & the portability & longevity of the brew. More importanbt in this case is the fact that cracker barrells would stand on end & be a natural gathering place, but the libations (liquid) were served from barrels laid on their sides (& probably w/ access more tighly controlled by the storekeeper.)

  16. Celear communications of expectations (unit to National) should alleviate any problems. Our unit participates in Vespers during any Scout function at which we are given the opportunity as a sign of our world brotherhood as scouts. That's how we lay it out to parents. We also attend Catholic Mass or let parents know in advance if we will not be able to include before our return on Sunday afternoon. (Several evening Masses are celebrated in our city.) I note the particulars because some units might try squeak by w/ 2 leaders on a given trip and then they are confronted with what to do when trying to allow boys to not attend the unit activity.

    Any other ideas....

  17. Hi, welcome to the campfire,

With a 15 yr. old Life Scout & a 5 yrs. old pre-Tiger it might be time for me to get retrained on Cub Sout topics buty I do remeber tryimg to keep it moving (busy, busy, busy.) But I also remember trying to make sure that its easy to join he gathering game / activity (or to end it!) We also used the format from program helps w/ a twist; whether we met in the afternoon or evening we progressed from Gathering to Openning ceremony, working on Cub advancement, Hands on activity, Snack, Clean up (Cubs do it -- not parents -- never do anything that a Scout can do for himself!) & Closing. It is easier to progress toward the arts & Crafts & then on to food than put away a new toy or project & review "requirements."

Also I work w/ several packs that "run their own program" (the saem program year after year.) That can work, but personally I really put the program helps to work at the Pack (cub) level -- we've a pretty experienced Troop & I haven't been able to convince the Patrol Leaders Council to try usinmg the program helps for a year. DS, any professional observastion on "troop programs & program helps?" They look good to me.

  18. Just a few quick thoughts...

Take the time to recognize this leader. If your unit "doesn't do leader recognition" this gentleman is a good reason to start. There are several other threads out there dealing w/ "Adult Recognition" and even some recipients shrug it off, but find a way to let this guy know what a great impression he has made on you and the good he has done through scouting.

More than likely other posts will advise caution?) you to be sensitive to his wishes but... Tell your COR & IH, let District know.

    You've already told us!
