Momma, He has not replied to the emails and he mumbled something undecipherable to the friend's parent/comm member. I really appreciate all the comments. I guess I wonder why this 17 1/2 year old can't "man up". We have had 17 year olds murder people, win the Medal Of Honor on Iwo Jima, run a family farm, father children, earn a million thru running a business. Many things, from good to bad to worse and everything in between. Yet this one kid can't say, "Mr. Guggenheim, what I did was wrong. I know that now. I was wrong to blame this whole thing you. I will work to patch up my lack of integrity" There is a good chance I will perform his SMC in 6 months. Should I let him know now that I will not give him a positive Eagle review based on this incident? Based on page 26 of pub#33088 policies and proced he can always appeal. One other point. We passed him without the SM apology because the SM had gone home. It was 10pm or 10:30 at the completion and some people have to work in the morning. Had we not erred on the side of helping this person we should have said "let's put off this judgement for a month or two". Of course then the Eagle would have been unattainable. Top 3% of Scouting? WOw it's things like that that'll keep you going. They would let my first class 13 1/2 year old attend NYLT. You must be 14. Some 18 year olds act 9. Some 13 year old are Eagles. A hard and fast number is a stupid thing. They don't know the boy. Would his SM approve of him at NYLT, that shold be a factor. The boy has been a DC for 14 months. What grades does he get in school. Is he mature? What kind of camper is he? Wants to be a PL this year and would have benefitted greatly from the traing now he will not have it. If I could have only gotten his mom preggers 6 months earlier?!>!?!>!?!

Star Scout "smith" realizes he has not advanced in the last 3 years as a star. His 18th b-day is 12-27-08. Friday, I get a call asking if we can convene a BOR for Star Scout Smith. Mind you it is 27 June. His SMC will be the same night. Boy tells Dad, "I asked Mr. Guggenhiemer if I could have my SMC a couple of times and he has not gotten back to me." Dad then takes up for the boy and calls Comm members and asks about BOR. The SM is angry. Seems smitty was LYING about asking for the SMC. He never asked for the SMC. Dad is angry , being duped by his angel. SM passes the boy along to the BOR with the charge that the Scout has lied to get his board done in this EMERGENCY manner. Boy admits to lying. We tell him what a stupid thing it is to: wait until the last minute. lie about your Scoutmaster so the boy's difficiency looks like the SM difficiency. That he has 6 months to complete a project and a years worth of MBs We talk to boy for 1 1/2 hours and at 10pm just two hours shy of turning into a pumkin boy passes BOR. Boy displayed tremendous lack of judgement and integrity. Boy will apoligize to SM. Boy had completed requirements and aged about a year and a half in the couple of hours we(BOR --SMC) had him. I mostly passed him on the fact that he realized it was dumb to lie. He completed all the requirements. I also considered the possiblity of the boy saying for the balance of his life, "the Adults didn't pass me so I never got even a chance at Eagle." Now if he does not make it, it will be up to him. I think boy was genuinely sorry. What would you have done?

I have personally told two boys, "in good faith to all the other boys in scouting ,if I sit on your board of review I can tell you that you will not get voted to pass that board because I have not seen you Scribe (or ASPL) at all." Me: What have you done as the Scribe? Scout: I helped Mr. Rodgers with the sign ups in September. And a couple of other things(it's now August) Me: about how many hours did that take you? Scout "6 hours" About now he sees the light. Both good kids. Both are "jocks" more than they are Scouts. Nobody had ever done that before in our unit. SM agrees they should have heard it from him long ago , but did not see enough of both boys to bring it up. In the 80's there was a poster of a Drill Instructor that said, "If you were accused of being a Marine, would there be enough evidence to convict you?" I asked both boys the same question and they agreed there was little evidence to support their POR completion. I like what Kudu says. If we had stronger boys they would have peer led these boys long before I said something.

I love how Scouting organizations hire some Million do$$ar marketing firm to change the image. Put the effort into making the program fun and safe and the girls that are in the program, girls that enjoy the program, will do all the marketing you need. My daughter was in it for 13 years, k-12. I've got a great Corned Beef recipie that I would like to use in a D.O. on a camping trip for the Rocking Chair gang Well I'm not going to bring two cans of beer on a campout. By skipping the beer what will be left out? What does beer/ alcohol do to meat in a simmering pot? I doubt I'll be able to tell.
