Sponsor a Child on Pine Ridge Reservation`
ScoutParent replied to ScoutParent's topic in Open Discussion - Program
There are many children waiting for sponsorship. We received a letter for our sponsored child the other day and in answer to our question of what he would like us to send he asked for two cans of spam meat...what Boy Scout can't relate to that?!? It's alot of fun and a great opportunity to teach the boys about another culture within our own country. -

The noble, the brave, and the sickening

Of course there is the benefit of the psychological impact this will have on would be terrorists in the Muslim world. I imagine they will have a different image of the US military and the treatment they may receive if caught.....hmm, I wonder if that is an accident? -

NJ, I think there are probably a few things we agree on, we both care about our families, we both try to be involved in our children's activities, we both enjoy verbal sparring on here; there that's 3 off the top of my head! As far as the ages of the people involved, I think that is less important than the rank of the people involved. If a private messes up, the sergeant is held accountable too. Where is the accountability of these NCO's and officers? Giving an unlawful order is just as much a criminal act as following one. -

NJ, if I remembered where I found it; I would share that info with you. I read it prior to McVeigh's execution so please don't fault this 43 year old brain for forgetting where I found it! Additionally, I read the decision from the case filed by the OKC's victim group against IRAQ some time ago---I don't remember now where exactly that is either. -

Having been an MP in peacetime, I first want to point out that Prison Guards (95C) in the US Army are a distinct job from Military Police (95B). The standards are less rigid to become a prison guard and test scores may be lower. Even so, in Basic Training all soldiers learn the basics of EPW and CPW treatment. It is in the soldier's manual as well. There is no way that these soldiers did not know that this treatment was improper. UNLESS those in higher positions ordered them to do it. Should they have stood firm and refused the orders based on the lawfullness of the orders? Of course. I wonder how easy that would be to do in a foreign country, in the middle of a war, I hope I would do the right thing. From what I understand, at least one soldier did report it to the IG. Should these privates be held to a higher standard than those that ordered these unlawful acts? Court Martial these privates only after court martialling their superiors who gave the orders. -

NJ, no I wasn't referring to an article but the actual writ of mandamus filed by Mcveigh's lawyer. I don't know what the rest of your post was about...supposition on your part I suppose. Generally the last people defense attorneys want on the the jury are former law enforcement... -

Strom Thurmond received the largest % of the black vote that any SC senator has ever received in his last election. Seems the black voters in his state didn't agree with your assessment of this man. Strom Thurmond was known to be the father of a black coed. He frequented the college regularly meeting with and visiting his daughter; both in the president's office and throughout the campus. Most students realized that he was her father although neither father nor daughter referred to it. Blacks in South Carolina didn't hold it against him because he "did right" by her. His daughter sent him Father's day cards and he reciprocated with letters to her. Most of these facts and many other interesting ones can be found at www.blackcommentator.com. Strom Thurmond was also a WWII hero who with the 82nd Airborne, stormed the beaches of Normandy, was wounded; won 5 battlefield stars and 18 decorations. Stom Thurmond was the only major office holder in the US to be elected by write in votes. He was a member of the Dixiecrat Party who ran for president under a STATES RIGHTS platform. Read the Southern Manifesto to see more about that. Read the entire speech that one paragraph has been excerpted from to gain a better understanding of his views. Other members of his party at the time considered him a moderate and didn't trust him because his emphasis was different from theirs. In the 1960's he joined with republican forces to again fight for STATES RIGHTS. He was consistently and foremost concerned with STATES RIGHTS. Although he opposed the Civil Rights Act; it was because he felt it should not be legislated to the states. He hired the first black aide, he appointed blacks to positions of importance and established black colleges in his state.

Whether carried on covertly or overtly; it's still religious beliefs they are questioning. How about their education, their prior judicial experience (how many reversals due to error, etc, etc). How a potential justice feels on any topic personally is irrelevant.
-
Government and religion should be kept separate unless senators are questioning potential justices about their religious beliefs? Seems silly to me.

Next time you go to your dentist ask what PPO's they belong to. Then go on the internet; look up that particular PPO and buy membership for your family for 1 year for approximately $ 149.00. Each procedure is approximately 1/2 the cost; it can be used in conjunction with your insurance and you can have pre-existing conditions and it doesn't matter.
