  1. With your IP address a person can use your computer against you. That is why it is recommended to have a firewall. They might just be able to read information now but who knows they might also be able to put a trojan horse program on your computer andd gain access to credit card numbers and favorite websites as well as different user names and profiles stored on your computer.
  2. IP addresses are an important part of this discussion because if I have your IP address i can put nasty programs on your hard drive and execute them that is why you also need a firewall
  3. Actually in my opinon stay on the dial up modem because when you dial in to go online your IP address changes on DSL or cable it stays the same. As for getting off AOL I agree AOl is a horrible service because if you go into a chat room it shows your user name and people can guess its @aol.com. Go to Hotmail.com and sign up for a free email box and only give that one out. Also if they do chat online instruct them to get a new username and it is easy to do so.
  4. I have to say this NJCUBSCOUTER I actually am agreeing with you on your post. That is scary. Isnt NAMBLA the organization that has targeted John Walsh of America's Most Wanted because he vehmently opposes them every chance he gets?
  5. Maybe you should look at your Charter Organization for help on Summer Camp ideas. My Co is a church that help pays upkeep on two different properties one in Nebraska that is a conference center and the other in Black Hills that is a rustic camp. We use both in our camping cycle and the boys enjoy it. Just a thought for more see the alternative to summer camp thread
  6. Next year the troop I belong to may actually attend out local scout camp. We have been blessed with the chance to go camping in the Black Hills every summer and this year we are going to Croker Creek Tn. for a jamboree sponsored by our CO. Scout camp isnt the end all of camping we have never been to the local scout camp and enjoy our summers. Some of the stuff we have done is White Waater Rafting, Horseback riding, Cave Exploration, Mountain Climbing, Watching fireworks over MT. Rushmore, and so on and so on
  7. Nice answer back to the point Yes there is a absolute morality. The morality we all rely on can be traced back to the 10 Commandments in one form or another they have formed the basis for all LAWS. Now for morality eveolving it just doesn't happen. I f we state morality evolves we go to the point of relative morality which is what I was decrying when I started this topic. YOu are taking morality and fitting it to your standards insted of fitting your standards to morality. My point is that there is an absolute standard of conduct that we have to live up to. A standard we are responsible to s
  8. I love the debate that this topic has started. Yes there is a contiunity in the Bible between the Old and New Testament. In the Old Testament the law was gven so that people would recognize what sin is. After learning what sin is we were given the remedy to that sin in the person of Jesus who fulfilled the law. Plato once wrote that if there was ever a truly good man the world would kill him and that is what happened as such I pattern my life after that of Christ and His teachings. As for communion I belong to a church that doesn't practice communion the same way as other churches. We bel
  9. I think our consenus all comes from dealing with this issue either in scouting or in our families. It is great
  10. WE once had a picky eater and he was told that if he didn't eat what was served he didn't eat. I know this sounds harsh but it worked when he learned we didn't give in he learned to eat. As for the mother I would inform her that she is casuing a disruption in the troop and she has to make a choice.

    Food

We are a troop from the poor side of town and how we handle food costs is a bit different. We fundraise through out the year and put all monies into the troop budget to be used as needed. We charge a small fee to the kids to make them realize that if they cancel they are out of luck and have to pay usually no more than 5.00 per outing. The troop pays all other fees and purchases equipment as needed. We also do jobs around for our charter partner to help them out and they help us out with a yearly donation over and above what we raise. If we didn't do it this way we would not have anyone
  12. I was taught as a child and teach that there is such a thing as absolute morality. This is the morality taught by our forefathers and by the faith they had. I am ashamed to hear schools and society preaching relative morality. That is there is no absolute morality anymore. This sickens me is this not the reason gor the rising crime rate or lack of respect for parents.
  13. The way I understand it from asking a United Way employee. Yes I called them and asked. Is that when a donation is designated to a certain group it goes to that group minus a percentage used to pay costs of fundraising.
  14. For all the help we need we are supposed to ask or UC's for help. Someone please read its 7 o clock do you know where your unit commissiones is? Alot of troops dont have UC or they are doing there own thing. That is why my advice is to get help from a different troop including a joint troop committee meeting to discuss some activiteis for both troops. If that doesn't work dont be afraid to ask for help from the DE they actually have good advice.
  15. WE seem to have taken the idea that all practical jokes are evil. We have embraced a culture of everyone is a victim. My policy in the troop is some practical jokes are ok as long as the go through me. I have quite a expeirnce of Jokes so if some of the ones proposed are to mean I offer a replacement. You can think of me as a PJ cop.
  16. Uness you speak up the troop is in serious trouble. I have discovered that sometimes it is better to speak up than to remain quiet. talk to the other parents and get some of them to go with you to the troop committee meeting and to support you in your discussion with the troop leadership. Or invite your DE to attend the meeting and have him make the recommendations
  17. I am hunting for memorbilia relating to the General's Lifesaving Scouts which was started by the Salvation Army in the early 1900's It was later closed and all troops became BSA troops. I am looking for a research project I am doing.

  19. I am collecting any memorbilia dealing with the Salvation Army including the General's Life Saving Scouts, and Boy Scouts especially patches. The main one I am looking for is a pocket patch with the american flag and The Salvation Army flag on it and it says commissioned leader The Salvation Army flag has the words blood and firs on it. With a crest in the middle in between the two flags.
  20. The United Way made the signing of a non discrimation pledge contingent of receiving funding. You ahd to sign it or no funding. The church I work for receives UW funding so we signed it. But we also feel that the time is coming when we canot accept UW funding due to the restrictions that are putting on all faith based organizations. What this have to do with Scouts is that we have seen the UW funding for alll scout programs cut to less than 15% of budget. Some of us have revolted against UW by designating our gifts to go directly to the BOy Scouts.
  21. I had the oppoetunity to attend a seminar on real men put on by all people Planned Parenthood. I have to say I do not endorse them but the principles put forth in this seminar were quite clear. 1. Sex is more than a physical act it is also a Psychological and spiritual act as well as a emotional. I know this is shocking but it is true. 2.There are consequences to the act of sex Pregnancy, AIDS, STD's. 3. Having Sex before you are ready can damage you psychologicaly (sic) by harming your emtional development. 4. The media bombards us day and night with sexual imagery that w
  22. Actually I figured it out. Enter the correct email address and click continue the nleave the page it was set to the correct email address.
  23. My list of great people would include Bishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela for the truth in Apartheid commission that has allowed South Africa to heal the wounds caused by apartheid. I would also have to include Evangeline Cory Booth of The Salvation Army the first woman to be head of a Christian Denomination.
  24. Isn't that what a discussion is supposed to be. A gathering together of different viewpoints and a discussion of how they relate to the program. In one of my church groups we believe that Christianity is diffrent for everyone. We all serve the same Lord as Christians and hold to certain common agreements but beyond that Christianity is colored by our past expeirences and makes us into the persons we are in Christ. I truly enjoy the debates in here and even though I usually state my opinion and respond to quite a few issues. You would nt see me doing that in public. I enjoy the anyom
  25. My troop is fairly lucky in this matter. We are registered to a church so this didnt affect us much but it did affect another council in Iowa. In Iowa city the school district refused to allow the scouts to hold meetings on school property in because of this matter. The cool thing is the school district was told to deny "open" access to the scouts was a violation of state law and they were forced to rescind their decision because if they kicked the BSA out ALL groups had to leave the school. The day has come when a minority can contrl the public and it aint nice. We all need to take a sta
