  1. My son's patrol is the Big Dogs. they have custom patrol patches. their yell, If you can't scout with the Big Dogs, stay in the Pup tent....
  2. During my beading ceremony, I remember the significance and proper wear of each part of the regalia was explained. I was instructed then that the beads could be worn alone, with the WB neckerchief and woggle, or with another nekerchief. But that the WB neckerchief was only worn with the leather woggle, and beads. And that the leather woggle was only worn with the full regalia. Also that the regalia were only worn with Class A uniform. No beads with t-shirts, polo shirts, etc.
  3. Try thepatchplace.com There are other sites also that can do custom patrol patches. When my son was a webelo, they decided on the "Big Dog" as a patrol/den name. Our patches turned heads everywhere we went. they took Big Dog t-shirts as a class B uniform. Our Yell was "If you can't scout with the Big Dogs, stay in the Pup tent!!!" I say, be original, have fun with it.. You will also find it builds Quite a bit of unit pride, when others want to be Big Dogs or Rainbow Trout or Road Kill, etc.
  4. Just wanted to clarify my previous post..... Does BSA allow such activities?....No. Are we a part of BSA every minute of our lives?.. no. I happen to love playing paintball. Many of the scouts in my troop do too. We can have fun together OUTSIDE of the BSA program. Not Wearing uniforms is not a "dodge" of the rules. It is a reinforcment that we are operating as "friends",not as a troop. Other outings we wear our class A's when travelling. What message does that send?? BSA has policy we follow. We also do FUN stuff as fathers (moms)and sons (and daughters) as FRIENDS....
  5. We have taken out our boys numerous times to play paintball, and other such "forbidden" activities. What is extremely important to understand, is that our outing was a group of friends who happened to be in the same scout unit. No tour permit, etc. These outings were not SCOUT functions, and it must be clear to all who participate that no uniforms are worn. We happen to be a group of friends with a common interest. so don't cancel the event, but make it very clear that you are having some fun together OUTSIDE of the scouting program.
  6. After 11 pages of this thread, I can't believe I'm the only dentist here. Seems like I'm constantly running into other dentists in scout uniforms at various scouting events... BTW, I'm also an army veteran, little league coach, dad, and third generation scouter..
  7. E-mail is a great modern tool, however I also like to call my SPL on the phone and have him call the patrol leaders, you get the idea....If a parent or scout complains they didn't get the info, I refer them back to their PL or SPL. "boy lead troop" means placing resposiblity in the boys hands. Guess I'm getting a little off the subject, also a little old fashioned. don't get me wrong, I am into technology and new age conveniences. I just like to make sure I am doing my job by not doing the boys work for them.
  8. Nice.... I plan on using it to help inspire some my life scouts, and others on what it truly means to be an eagle.
  9. Bummer that you have a schedule conflict with Roundtable.. It can be a great source of info, and relating with others in your position is a great comfort. that's what Roundtable is all about.. I want to echo what others have said about training and reading the Webelo Den Leaders Manual. Don't try to re-invent the wheel.. I started as WDL, am now the SM of my son's troop. You have one of the best jobs in all of scouting, It is up to you to get these boys excited about joining a troop. They are Cubs, but get to hang out with the Big Boys!!! Use your resources (Parents) to cover activity
  10. count me In!! That was somewhere on the list, "You might be a Wood-Badger if...you think campaign hats are cool." Just got myself one from BSA, but would love to have a second, so one I can keep clean for meetings, the other for outings.
  11. book called Meeting Sparklers. I am not totally sure of the title. had all kinds of cool ideas
  12. I wan't to repeat the sentiment of an earlier post. WE ARE NOT THE ARMY... the Army has regulations, BSA has guidelines. Wear something appropriate, wear it with pride. personally, I agree that campaign hats are cool. The fact that you make the effort to wear the uniform properly will be noticed by your scouts.
  13. I respectfully add that our patrol names are important in that we learn in WB that we are part of a world wide movement. and wherever I go, I find brotherhood (or sisterhood) in meeting fellow WoodBadgers, and knowing that even in AZ or NorthCA, a Beaver is a Beaver, etc. I now live in a different council from where I attended WB, but the one thing that is constant is the Ideals of scouting. Our WB patrols are not just teams of 5-6 people we attended a course with, they are a connection to the thousands of others we serve in a world wide movement. I'm a NoCal Beaver, but in AZ I'm still a
  14. I have taken both OWL and OLS, and served as a course director for OWL and staff for OLS. OWL is more specific for Webelos, teaching the outdoor activity pins and covering topics for camping with cubs. It is also required in order to earn the Webelo Den leader award (yellow on yellow square knot). Outdoor leader skills is for Scoutmasters and ASMs. It is oriented to teaching the outdoor skills required for tenderfoot through first class. camping skills are covered in much more depth than in OWL, since the boy scouts do much more outdoor stuff than the cubs. Outdoor leader skills is also
  15. I've been a BIG DOG (p-25), one of the BIG Chiefs (t-333), and in true Gilwell order, the first of my troop to get his beads. Yea BEAVERS!! WE3-41-03
