I thought YP training could be taken online WITHOUT creating a MyScouting account and logging in. I thought this was done to make it easier for reluctant non-registered adults to get the training. Just enter name, listen to course, take test and print out ticket. Some parents came back to me tonight, still non-YP, telling me that I was all wet. Seems I am?

Well consider today, I received an email from my son's school that he has summer vacation homework and I and Mrs. Schiff are responsible that he gets it done. Neither happened or would have happened to my parents. I am tempted to channel my Dad and tell them in blunt language to do their job. Back then there were consequences - spankings and worse. Yeah I got the belt. The phrase "Just wait 'til your father comes home" was dreaded. No social promotions back then. My parents did not have to worry about censoring movies, mail, tv, or books as the bad stuff was just not accessible. There were only 3 or 4 tv channels. Oh there was a close call in 9th grade when Peyton Place was briefly added to reading list. I think that English dept head eventually found a job at Woolworth's. My father told me, legally his kids were "chattel" and he would do as he wanted, in other words, the Village will mind its own business and mostly did.

Good "Part 1". I look forward to reading Part 2. It is harder being a parent today and the fault is not entirely with parents.

Anyway a parent, who had signed his son's health forms but not a separate camp Pick-up Authorization Form (sounds like movie Brazil, Brazil), needed to pick-up his son early. My son trained on a small Optimist when he was younger than 11. Sounds like a deal and the beginning of a boat rental business. Our troop has had to turn down deals or freebies, e.g. old canoes, simply because we did not have the storage capacity.

Family nights seem to work better when the camp controls the herd. Limit families to a specified area - say the parade ground and campfire ring. No running up to a campsite to drop-off stuff or getting a camp tour. My preference would be for scout to sit with their unit at campfire, but somehow the umbilical gets re-attached. Sorry this happened. Safety is job 1 and that includes keeping the sparks away from the gunpowder. My $0.02

And with the number of people using LeFeber and Lyle dropping over the last few years, the council's executive board decided it wasn't worth it financially to invest in the camps. "They felt that it would be financially improper to invest in underutilized properties, and that because of the trends, camp upgrades would in no way ensure an increase in the number of camper days ... to financially justify continued operations," Clark said in an email. Less than 50% of troops in the Three Harbors Council have sent their Scouts to LeFeber and Lyle in the last two years. But Loosen said that three years before that, 60% of troops from the council visited the camps. When he asked the head of the council why Scout leaders were not consulted, he was told an outside study was done. "It was an online survey of 300 people, parents and leaders. One of the things it said was that parents of Scouts didn't want their sons to go long distance. I have 38 young men up here this week, their parents want them up here. That was something made by Cub Scout parents, so it was a small portion of people taken out of context," Loosen said. Clark said a task force was formed when the Boy Scout councils in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties consolidated in 2011 to study use of the camps. Volunteers were invited to join the task force, which decided after two years of study to recommend in January closing LeFeber and Lyle.

The Venturers are challenging your authority and getting help from their parents. I'd say some training is in order. The Crew leaders (the kids as you call them) should be planning (soap, water, sunscreen) and leading their activities. You should be standing back and advising. Maybe you could bring in someone who has melanoma for a fun talk. Whoever leads, the point has to be made that there are consequences for not following safety rules - sunburn now, maybe melanoma later, ...maybe removal from your crew. My $0.02,

One interpretation might be "if you,as a volunteer working with kids, are good in your own state, you are good in PA up to 30 days", but how would PA law enforcement know? Schiff got pulled over for speeding in PA. In MA, "License and registration, please". In PA, "License, registration, and proof of insurance card". Officer, we don't have an insurance card issued in MA, there's an insurance stamp on the registration. "Well you have a problem. You are not in MA."

Individuals who reside in another state or country may serve as a volunteer for no more than 30 days as long as they provide clearances from their state or country of residence. If the individual will be volunteering for more than 30 days, they must obtain clearances as outlined above under “Which clearances are needed.†This is confusing as most of us do not carry a card that explicitly states one has passed a state and FBI background check. In Mass, every time you need a background check for school, little league, scouts,.., it is a do-over, pass/fail test. If a out-of-state driver's license would suffice, why not a PA driver's license too? I would think my firearms license would suffice but imagine the headline spin on that. Maybe if a volunteer worked for a school district, police, fire, their employer id would suffice. Pretty vague.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to get a "in writing" answer to this question.

He also announced that the state Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania State Police will be reducing the cost of both the child abuse and criminal history record checks from $10 to $8 for all other applicants. These changes, which grew out of conversations with legislators, will take effect on July 25. So volunteers are still required to get these PA background checks and will only pay for FBI check. Council employees will still have to pay but the cost has been reduced.
