  1. I was wonder what would you recommend for a welcome kit? I have a bunch of 11 years coming in from Cubscouts and I want to promote scout spirit with stuff to enjoy and teach. Also stuff for parent information. Thanks Robert
  2. Also has this person ever been a volunteer? I know parents that is just dumping kids at scouts and never finding out what they are doing. The court of honor we had, 5 scouts parents never showed up because they are off to their parties and never asked about how it went. The creepiness is from the parents who does not want their kids to learn from experienced and lifetime scouters. Scouts to them is just a babysitting service.
  3. People are thinking the "Spirit of Scouting" is creepy. Any scouter knows about the spirit and parents do not understand. Also what about the School Teachers that does not have kids in school? I am back in because of food myself. (This message has been edited by rdcrisco)
  4. Sorry, I am not a WoodBadger yet, but I thought this was funny!! http://www.scoutingnews.org/2007/12/29/if-you-dont-complete-your-ticket/
  5. I am a member of the LDS church and the church does not endorse any pushing of political affair. The church is on moderate. The church does not support Gay Marriages but we do not persecute choices. So who ever was pushing it to you was wrong. About the scouting, the church was one of the first to endorse the program about 2 years after scouting was founded(1912). It does has a wonderful program, but integration is still an issue and I am having the same issues at times.. I am working with the church on my side to help the issues. Sorry about the problems.
  6. Just had a guy sold me a almost brand new Olive Kelty Super Tioga and a Blue Yukon packs from $100 from his son who bought them and used them once each. Both fit me fine since I have a narrow frame. Now I have to start looking at Sleeping bags and tents.
  7. Could anyone suggest any free or lowcost training for helping with scouting? I am looking for more updated training with camping, hiking, first aid, backpacking, and more. I have gotten Basic First Aid, AED and CPR at a college for only $20. I know this is a broad topic, but I really want to get training and also provide information to other leaders to become more educate on scouting and outside adventures(Camping, Hiking). Also any free online training stuff would be cool.
  8. Thanks for the reply on the information. I am keeping in mind of the socks, but I been using light hiking boots alot and I also been breaking them in. But I still been having problems with my ankles and I feel that I am not buying a good pair of boots. I been outdoor places around here, but the sales person cares more selling a shoe than providing what I need. I am also looking for a boot that is good for the brush, so low cuts are not what I am looking for. My idea of a boot is more of a general all purpose boot that is more built for hiking. Can anyone recommend brands or a
  9. Can anyone provide recommendations? I am looking for a hiking boot for myself as a leader that I can use at Camporee hikes and also for week long events. I keep wearing sneakers and found out that I need something less snagging and more support. I like something that I can use to stand up for a while(2-3 hours) and also traveling around the entire camporee grounds (3 miles either way). I am also going on week long hikes(in Brush 5-8 miles a day) with family and friends now and realize that the Walmart Ozark Brands are not good enough. I been looking at Timberland since there is an
  10. I am looking to get Patrol Badges for the Grizzly Bear Patrol(probably bear patches) and I been finding out that patrol patches are not approved? Can any elaborate on this? Also can anyone recommend a patch to order patches from(esp for Bears). Thanks
  11. I keep getting an annoying logon screen, that when I login it asks me to update my profile(Location, Council, Position) and when I click submit I get this error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14' [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ','. /members/modify/process2.asp, line 19 Any ideas?
  12. The biggest idea is my troop had no idea about the Scout Jamboree until I came on board. The district we are in are supposed to send Flyers to all SM and my Troop is not even on the list. I had them added. I keep attending the roundtables and find out one thing, and then find out later the district changed the information between roundtables. Example has an event for first weekend of Sept and my entire troop went to find out that is was canceled because noone else was there.
  13. Who would usually be the contact person between my troop and the Council/District? We have several scout meeting, but I have never seen anyone from our district or council show up for the meetings. Also I found out the District and Council does not even know where our troop meets. I been going to the Rountables for the district and going to Council meets(when open to all scouters). How would be the best way to resolve this issue?
  14. The troop committee want a varsity group (14-18) because half of the boys in our troop is that age. The other half age range is 12-13. That is the explantion they keep giving me. They do not want Venturing, just Varsity. Also I already got the Training Sylabus, The Guide Books, the Program manuals. I read through all of them and been doing the program with great success. Now I am waiting for the council to Official Train me so the committee will approve and buy the awards.
  15. I been trying to talk to the Trainer for training in the District and I am getting a brick wall. I call the trainer about every other week to ask about training and he does not want to return call or emails. When I attend the roundtable and approach him, he says he gives me a call. The training is Varsity Coach, and I would be happy to do self training or such, to sign the card to give to my Troop Committee because they refused to support the Varsity program without the training. So no training, no Varsity, No High Adventure, No Scouts. Any ideas
  16. This is the group I use to ask question about the 2010 Jamboree, there seems to be National Staff on the group also. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nationalbsajamboree2010/
  17. Just got an email tonight that my application has been reset to staff. All you have to do is contact the 2010 Jamboree Support Staff and they fixed everything for you. Also when switching the app, they credit the $10.00 to your staff app.
  18. If you have a Troop Committee that has no idea what OA is, then how does one become a member of OA? I am trying to get some eagle scouts involved with OA, but the troop committee does not want them involved unless one of the leaders are involved.
  19. My scouts are getting tired and hurt carrying the American Flag and the Unit flag. Does anyone has plans on how to create the Carrying Straps? I remember a long time ago(20 years), the scouts created their own. Any help highly appreacted.
  20. Thanks for all the info, I am also belong to an LDS Group and I am starting a Varsity Patrol, but except for the Comittee and Scout Master, noone else has any experience. I am trying to push my scouts to become more Scouts than LDS Scouters. Example our stake has pushed that all scout troops should be going to Scout Camporees instead of LDS Camporees since most scouts will not show up for LDS Scout Camps(not challenging enough). SO I am getting Woodbadge this fall, to change the thinking and operation from LDS Adult to Scout Youth control, aka Patrol Method.
  21. Since there is alot of Woodbadgers here, can anyone provide tips on how to prepare for Woodbadge? I hear that when some people goes to Woodbadge, they do things that new leaders has no idea what is going on.. Ceremonies that seems to pop out of no where. I have been to alot of Roundtables and ceremonies that I do not recogize the songs or promises..
  22. Here is the question. If we do not have any leaders trained as Varsity leaders, can we still award the scout(s) the Varsity awards? I keep getting mixed information that I can not do the awards without approval from a Varsity leader. Like you can not have a troop without a scout master.
  23. Does anyone knows where I can get the Centennial Unit Numerals as one patch? I see on the new uniforms the Unit number is one patch. Here is an example: http://www.scoutingmagazine.org/issues/0809/a-design.html Any help is highly appreacted. Robert
  24. I was on the phone with the Jamboree Committee person for my Council and he told me that I will be refused. He said he will look into it but he believe either way I would be refused. How do new leaders get experience if they are not given a chance? When I heard about the Jamboree I started asking around at the Round tables. I was told that staff positions are harder to get in because they only look for people with Staff Jamboree experience. Do you believe this is true? I don't care what type of position I am in I just want to attend. Never attended as a kid due to money but no
  25. Well, fishy or not, I just want others want to make sure they read the application before they click submit on the form. Also when editing the form you can not change your position, so make sure you click on the position you qualify for otherwise you are stuck with the top choice. If you click scoutmaster and first asst scoutmaster, you will only be interview for scoutmaster. You can not edit this on your form. Edit only works with IE, Firefox gives you a blank page. Any you can not get the chance to submit a new applicaiton even if you are willing to pay for this.
