  1. My understanding is the World Crest is an option.
  2. "The committee member, for one, does not need to wear a uniform to perform their behind the scenes functions, and while they can technically wear one because there is a "PATCH" for the position, the uniform in this case is nothing more than a self ego booster for attending an adult meeting once a month, not even working with the kids. Why on earth does that person need to wear a uniform except to call attention to themselves." Maybe, or like me and some others, while we wear a Committee Member patch we function often like a ASM, if only to have enough adults present. The shirts with
  3. I'dd go see Barry Manilow, IF you paid me the $200, don't hate him just do not want to spend that long listening to him. The proablem is when an activity is allowed but nobody does it for a few years the notion sets in that its not allowed because it hasn't happened since the Lockstep Scouters moved up to troop level. Lockstep Scouters; those parrents who follow junior through the Scouting program, they may be helocopters or subscribe boy led, what does define them is as soon as the boy is done so are they. To ballance this the longterm Scouters need to be a tree of knoledge not dead wood.
  4. tonys wrote; Boys have the last word as to national policy pro's answer to them use 21 an boy age limit. my 2 cents A veto? yes.
  5. Two men have been mentioned, would they continue their TV career and just be doing spots for BSA or wouold they take on a true leadership role and only do TV spots for BSA?
  6. I hac a classmate who did something like this, evey meeting where we had to do some real work, like clean up the patrol equipment he would slip away, small town so only a few blocks to walk home He dropped out instead of mending his work-shy ways. Not much was ever said but we all knew who ducked out. His patrol can't be happy bout this. Maybe dad should stay home once since he won't attend the full event.
  7. Heck I'll go one better, ALL professional staff should participate in a high adventure activity at least every other year and not the same one each time either, and do it just like the boys and there leaders do. Paddle in hand or boots on the ground is the best way to see if the program is broken or thriving, 2nd hand reports and pretty pics just don't cut it. National leaders should go EVERY year to high adventure or national leval training camps and again no preferential treatment. Any that refuse might not be the Pros the BSA deserves. Lead by example.
  8. Did write sumptin bout accountability between National and local Scouters, decided to dump that so I don't get booted. A little simple thing instead, ban wearing neckerchiefs under the collar, period. If the ladies have one of those scarfs made for wear that way thats fine, everybody else role that collar under first.

    Done

Thankyou Eamonn for these words, they give me much to think of.
  10. Cept once a uniform always a uniform.
  11. If a bear can smell out a candy wrapper in a tent, someone in a sleeping bag has gotta reek, course if you spilled food on yerself Mr Bear might think the good stuff is under the bag and still role you over to check, a Scout is Clean.
  12. I think they are out there, toiling away, providing a outdoor boy led program as much as they are allowed, hoping for the day they can speak out and not risk their membership status. BP started this all from a book not ment for boys, found solid ground and his lifes work with the handbook for boys and Scouting flurished. Could another handbook (call it Scoutcraft Revisited) create another ground swell?
  13. Atikoken, haven't heard that name in years, was on the water up there with a church group the week Elvis died. Could still drink right from the lake at that time.
  14. Could this be a sign of a top heavy organization? If you have a long reply please spin off a new thread.
  15. I earned Lifesaving merit badge back in the early 70s, and qualified open water with PADI in 2006, cept for the dive tables the SCUBA cert was easier. SCUBA training has slipped a long way from what the YMCA did 40 years ago.
  16. Well if your that good you need to be a trainer, I can see a person being a trainer in one skill and need help in many others, since we arn't seeking anybodys blessing we can be a bit creative, the goal is Scouters able to lead in the field, not nifty neckwear, pocket doo-dads or another knotpatch. My hope is when the course is done all will be trained to a basic level overall and expert in at least one area. I can even imagine a course over a three day weekend being a big help though more days would be much better. How GB determins who is good enough to be a trainer

New style buttons on the office shirt. Then being dry clean only is not such a big deal.
  18. "Finally, training audience needs to clearly understand they are a pilot, and Goofy Things Will Happen. That's why you have pilots, to find out and replace what does not work." Excelent point All involved need to be prepared for things to not work right, frankly I don't see anybody who needs the full course being on the pilot run, there might not be much sepperating the skills of the trainers and the trainees. Documenting the proablems to finetune the course will be vital. Calm leval headness will be too.
  19. I've been trying to think through what all would be involved if GB was run even once as an off reservation pilot project. Would uniforms and Scout camps would be out, would national be upset over use of pre-1972 books and training materials? Might be better to host a "old traditinal week long camporee", kinda a Scout reinactment project like the Buckskinners or the SCA does, it's not like we expect national to give us credit for this training.
  20. So, is GernBadge stillborn, or am I not in the loop? If my staying away makes it happen thats fine too.
  21. Take a look at a globe of the world, we should call this planet Aqua not Earth. Learning to swim is a great way to learn to control your emotions, panic leads to trageddy, calm response combined with training should avert same. I am one of the slowest swimmers you will ever meet, training and practice makes me very unlikley to ever drown. I have also fallen asleep doing he back float in calm water. Plus SCUBA diving is a blast.(This message has been edited by prairie)

I sure hope the new knee highs will fit a 18 inch calf and size ten foot. BTW, I have not found a crew sock that will stay up for me, so I roll down or wear low socks.
