  1. I would say I put in (on average) 60 hours a week. Of course, I like it so much I became a District Exec. In case you guys don't know, the work you volunteer for the units is greatly appreciated. There is no real way to measure the successes you have helped create in each Scout, but know that it would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of the adult volunteers. Thank you.

  4. A couple of years ago, I went to National Camp School for COPE Director certification. Well, we did a skit there that became banned afterwards. We set up a small, indoor obstacle course and selected 3-4 volunteers from the crowd. Once those volunteers were selected, we explained that COPE deals alot with trust and communication, as well as many other goals. We then took the "volunteers" and placed them at the start of the event and blindfolded them.   6. As a police officer, I can tell you that, for the most part, if someone has three tickets for speeding, they are going to do it again. If they had learned their lesson, they would have stopped after the first one. I can tell you that the officers in my department won't stop anyone until they are going at least 13 over the limit. Some wait until 18-20. Those are almost automatic tickets and there really is no arguing with them. I personally think that the people with the authority in the group need to pull this person aside and tell them that he will not be allowed to drive scouts
  7. One was the AoL, but they have the papers on that. The other was a religious. I may try to find one of the old scoutmasters. The records would have to be about 15 years old now though. It's worth a shot I guess.
  8. As a youth (many years ago) I earned a couple of awards that can be worn on the adult uniform as knots. However, I have since lost the actual awards and the council can not find the records from them. IIRC, my scoutmasters were a little lax in sending the proper paperwork to the council office. My question is, how can I prove that I earned the awards and get the knots? I am still in the same council today as I was as a youth. They may take my word for it, but I would prefer to have some type of proof. Any suggestions?
  9. I went to NCS in May 2003 for COPE Director certification at Camp Bob Hardin in Saluda, NC. That course was one of the longest seven days of my life! We were up for breakfast by 0700 and rock-n-rolled until at least 11:00PM every night. Oh, did I mention that it rained the ENTIRE time! After that week, I hurt in places I didn't know I had! Man, I want to go back so bad!
  10. I was tapped out this year at Summer Camp and went through my Ordeal last month. IIRC, I was one of two adults tapped out this year. I plan to earn my Brotherhood as soon as allowed. Should get it done before next summer camp. Lodge is Chicksa 202.
  11. I actually had two starts in scouting. I first started in cub scouts as a youngster. I was successful in advancement, earning many awards all the way through Webelos. I earned my Arrow of Light then on to Boy Scouts. While in the troop, I progressed through First Class. IIRC, I had earned Star and was waiting on the next advancement ceremony when the bottom fell out. When I started to get involved in baseball and girls, the BSA fell to the wayside.   12. I need a new backpack for hiking and camping. The one I have is getting outdated and worn out. My current one was a Wal-Mart special and I have no idea how many cubic inches it is. So, Help me decide what size a pack I need and any specific packs I sould look at. I am not sure of the size I need. I am looking for a pack that I can use on weekend trips. Probably no longer than two nights. So, just how much stuff will fit in a 3000 cubic inch? 4000 cubic inch? Thanks, OX

COPE is designed to be a progressive building program that is founded on seven key principles--teamwork, decision making, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, self esteem and trust. We start with initiative games that are used to break the ice, learn names and generally get the group comfortable working together.   14. The Trust Fall is the strongest low course element on a COPE course for building trust. I have sent literally hundreds of people, young and old, off the trust fall. The vast majority of them are scared to death when they are preparing to fall. Once they fall safely into the arms of their group, almost all of them seem to have a new respect for their group members. They also have a newfound sense of pride in themselves. IIRC, the COPE standards allow for some personal equipment to be used only if the COPE Director on the course inspects it and deems it suitable. Now, should the Director allow a piece of gear and it fails, the blame falls right on his shoulders. It is a risky postion for a Director to be in since he/she does not know the history of the gear (falls, impacts, chemical contamination, etc.). So, as a general rule, most COPE progra
  16. Twocubdad- I am taking that route with course equipment, such as rope, harnesses, etc. The Camp Director is going to get some of that stuff through his budget. The Ranger is the former COPE coordinator. He asked for the building materials before I did. Believe it or not, I am having better luck than he is.
  17. First, let me say "Thank You" for all the replies so far. I had no idea that I would get so many. Now, I would also like to say that I am not in the mood to start calling for audits or going public to the media. That will only lead to bigger problems down the road.   18. scoutingagain- I guess I should have mentioned that approach. The SE has said that he has no problems closing the COPE course. Although he says he is behind it, it is only in spirit. I think that volunteer pressure is the only reason he hasn't closed it yet. As for the course work, it is mandatory work that must be done to comply with BSA standards. If it was elective work, I would not even ask. However, I am betweena rock and a hard place. We have camp inspection in June. Since this includes COPE, the work has to be done by then--or else.   19. nldscout- For the past two years, we have put this stuff in the budget. But, they are always cut out during the budget meetings with little, or no, discussion. So, we are left with the problem of making BSA-required upgrades and repairs, but have no money to do it with. The council tells us what a worthwhile cause it is and that they are glad people are putting forth the effor to further develop it, but will not pony up when the time comes.   20. I guess the thing that gets me is that other groups in the council, such as OA, have custodial accounts with the council. The reason they get one (as explained by the professionals) is that they make a "nice" cash donation to the council at the end of the year. Also, there are many "bigwig" volunteers in our OA, who the council won't say "no" to. So, what you are saying is that if I start our fund raising efforts for our course (corporate sponsorship, etc.) that money can legally be used for other ventures by the council according to BSA policies? That doesn't make alot of sense to me.
  21. Hey folks. I have yet another question to bounce off of you. As some of you might remember, I have been the COPE coordinator for my council for a little over a year. I am in the process of building our program back up to where it has been in the past. Our course is a little different than most. Of all the courses we do, around 75% of them are for non-scout groups. This allows us to charge scout groups VERY little to use the course as funds are made with the school and corporate groups.   22. I work for a municipal police department. My shift captain is a great guy. I am going to take some saved up vacation time this summer for three weeks (only 9 work days). With this time, I will be the COPE section director for summer camp. You have no idea how much I am looking forward to the change of pace in June!
  23. You know. Just to make sure I was not totally out of my mind, I went back through the BSA's website. That thng is like a maze! Maybe I was not looking in th eright place, but I never found a page or list that had any national-level professionals for the BSA.
  24. Can someone help me find an organizational flow chart for the BSA and possibly who is in each position? I have searched various places looking for one and have had no luck. I have always been curious about the "rank structure" of the BSA on a national level and council level. I know that the SE is the head cheese over a council (cause I have to ask him for money ), but I know he must answer to people on both the local and national levels. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a chart? Does sucha beast even exist? Thanks, OX
  25. Well, I talked to my committee and our new council field director. I think we may have some good funding alternatives. Our field director is a huge fan of COPE and will help in any way he can. I gave him the lowest bid for equipment and he is going to call some personal contacts in the outdoor industry to try to beat the prices. We are also going to try to get at least of those companies to sponsor our course. As Sturgen said earlier, we may see if we can work out a deal with a company to provide free gear in exchange for some advertising of some sort. This would save us around $3,00
