  1. Is there another ordeal weekend in your lodge within one year from when he was elected? If so, I would encourage him to go to that one, as he will have a better time if he is not on crutches.

     

    If not, have him go to this ordeal weekend. Tell the lodge about the situation ASAP. According to national policy they need to be extremly accomidating to people with disabilities (in my opinion, temporary ones included).

  2. At my troop meeting tommarrow we were scheduled to have patrols work on patrol flags ect, but due to a school event alot of them can't make it (their new patrols, no APLs yet ect.) So I want to get started on our next theme of orienteering a week before I had planned on doing it. Anyone have suggestions on an interesting way to present something orienteering related at a troop meeting. Especially something that does not require alot of time for setup (don't have access to the space to layout a course ahead of time ect.)

  3. It's good to see another international scouter on these forums. Welcome! I am not at all familiar with Ecuadorian Scouting, so I don't know if the positions are comparable, but at age 18 the only position open to you in a Boy Scout troop is Assitant Scoutmaster. Once you get to the states, contact your local council (www.scouting.org can help you find a phone number) introduce yourself to them, and see if they have any suggestions on how you can help out.

  4. What about the situation in a Venturing Crew where there is only one female Venturer on the trip? Do you tell her that she can't come unless she can find a female buddy, or would you let her sleep in a tent besides her own? (Assuming that the female leader on the trip is not there mother).

    Living the Scout Oath and Law in your everyday life, does include scouting. That means when he is at scouting he should follow the oath and law.

    As to the question of loyalty, would you deny a scout eagle because he moved (that would be showing disloyalty to his community)? What about a scout who switches troops because they don't believe they are being treated fairly in their current one? If you wouldn't do it for those, I don't see how you can do it for deciding to take an EMT class.

     

    I agree with OGE on this one, as long as he had a 6 month period of activity since becoming eagle, and he meets all the other requirments he should be fine.

  6. No, there is one national policy on when the sash is to be worn. If you check in the main OA forum on this site I think you will find a discusion on it. I realize that you wanted a source on where this policy is found, but I can't seem to find it right now. However, below, is my understanding of it (I will follow up if I find the source).

    The sash is worn when it is neccesary to identify you as a member of the OA and you are acting in some capacity as a member of the OA. Except for serving as an elangomat you only wear the sash when in uniform or regalia. If you are at an event b/c of your membership in the OA you would were the sahs (examples: OA meeting, running a unit election, giving a speech as a Chapter officer ect...) In your situation where they said they were wearing the sash b/c members of the OA were doing the opening, I would say that only those who participated in the opening should be wearing their sash.

     

    As I said earlier I will post if I find the source I was looking for.

  7. If you do show and sell before the take order, you can use the leftovers from the show-and-sell to serve the take order sales. Contact store managers, and they are almost always willing to let you sell. Also, I have been told that Walmarts will match however much you sell in front of there store (up to $1000).

  8. I think, atleast in theory, combing the new scouts after one year has the most merit. However, the one problem that our troop has with it is inconsistant recruitment numbers. We may bet 15 new scouts one year, and only 3 the next. Some years our membership numbers double overnight. The problem this creates is that to intigrate the new scouts into patrols, the patrols either need to become gigantic (12+ scouts) or you need to recreate the patrols every year (hard to create patrol identity when it is constantly changing). Anyone have a solution to this problem, that keeps the patrols intact year to year, and intigrates new scouts into patrols (either right away, or after a year in the NSP)?

  9. We are pretty close to the "whatever" side. We may make a general announcment once or twice reminding scouts that they may have partials they want to complete, but that is about it. what happens occasionally, however, is that one or two scouts will schedule a meeting with the MB Councelor for all scouts who have a partial in that badge. Whether they are pushed by Mom/Dad to do that, I don't know, but it seems to happen once or twice each year.

  10. What you need to do in your letter/e-mail/phone call is explain to them why they want to be on the ceremonies team. In my chapter some reasons would be:

    1. It's fun

    2. You get to go to sleep in a "ceremonialists only" cabin

    3. If you are not on the ceremonies team you are pretty much automatically an elangomat (due to size of chapter)

  11. I am unaware of any form that does what you're looking for (doesn't mean one doesn't exist). My suggestion is that you either use the one for Cub Scouts individually, then average the scores, or that you figure out what critiria you would like to use and create your own.
