  1. While I am not sold on a sweater, I do like the idea of a cold weather uniform top. Currently I wear a BSA fleece pullover and when it's warmer, the nylon jacket. The wool jac-shirt is on my someday list. How about a nice, heavy wool or flannel uniform shirt?

  2. Does your unit have insufficient leaders OGO? Maybe dad doesn't like camping. Maybe there are a dozen more kids at home? Maybe his job isn't 9 to 5 with weekends off? Maybe his reply to you was not what he intended to say? When I was a Scout, no mommies or daddies ever went with us, just the troop leaders. It is what we volunteered for. We have (or make) the time, some don't or can't. I Scout when I can, but family and work come first. No work, no house. I have more important things to do, but I like Scouting so I spend the time I can. Plus, I am of the opinion that too many mommies and daddies on a campout undercut the program (asking mommy instead of PL or SPL), and interfere when they should observe. Scouting can be parentally competitive not unlike sports or pageants.

  3. As a teen I was a cook for two summers at my council camp. It is very hard to feed 200 to 300 people 3 square meals a day but it is possible. We made ham dinners, meatloaf, shepards pie, turkey dinners, chop suey, spaghetti, baked beans(real, soak all night, bake all day),pancakes, omelettes, oatmeal, french toast amd on and on. Bread was baked from scratch every day. Cakes and sheet pies were made, pudding or jello for lunch desserts. Of course with each meal was the appropriate sides.I dislike the cafeteria style of eating- reminds me of school too much. We had tables seating ten and ate family style. Family style is faster to serve and therefore leaves more time for other activities. Plus everyone starts and finishes together. As far as the building itself, it needs character. Artifacts from long ago adorning the walls, staff totems, visiting troop totems, Scout oath and law, plaques, pictures, and such. Are you building a dining hall Eagle2004?

  4. Well here is the report from the Granite State you all want. Guiliani was a last second no-show at a rally(?) for him last week. Romney is from Massachusetts and those of us who live in Bostons "playground" of palacial vacation cottages can't afford him as Pres. It seems for the Dems, a 3 way tie exists between Clinton, Edwards, and Osama. All have campaigned extensively. And why shouldn't NH get the 1st Primary? We are, after all, one of the 13 original colonies (9th to ratify the Constitution, on June 21, 1788), and is the birthplace of Daniel Webster and Franklin Pierce. If I had to pick to for the big dance, I would say Clinton and McCain will get the Primaries here. But the true Presidential winner will be decided at 12:01 am on Election day by the 7 residents of Dixville Notch, NH.

  5. Well we've been around this mullberry bush til I'm dizzy. An Insignia Guide (BSA Item #33066, around $5.00) is a worthwhile investment and is light enough to be carried in the 3-ring binder containing your SM handbook (at least the latest version!) QUALITY UNIT EMBLEM: Right sleeve, position 3 (4 inches below seam or, if National Honor Patrol Award is worn, touching it). Only the most recently earned Quality Unit emblem may be worn. GW, the 'Members should make every effort to keep their uniforms neat and uncluttered' is in the paragraph under the heading EXCESS INSIGNIA. Keeping your uniform 'clean and ironed' would fall under the 11th point of the Scout Law. I am up for re=election as Uniform Sheriff.
