  1. My oldest made Life four months after turning 12..

My second oldest, currently a 13 year old (7th grade) Star Scout

    Life at age 13..

After reading this thread I was surprised about the rank advancement.

It has been thirteen years since I got out of Boy Scouts at the age of 18 (earned my eagle just as I aged out.) I remember hearing about a few scouts getting Eagle at 13 and 14 but thought that was rare. In my old troop we never pushed rank. It was always up to each individual scout to earn it. Now the Senior Patrol did teach the skills for the younger scout to learn and earn rank but that was it. The average age in my troop for Life scouts was 15 to 16 years old and 17 yrs old for Eagle. Are troops now a days just pushing the scouts to earn rank and burning them out or was my troop a rarity?

  2. "As I recall, the major issue against skill awards was that all information was taught at once, with no repetition to aid learning. For example, current requirements have some first aid for tenderfoot, some more for second class, and still more for first class. So the subject of first aid is taught in 3 different chunks instead of one skill award. Some people feel that this facilitates learning more"

I know in my troop this was not the case. The older Scouts would teach the new scouts the skill awards and even sign off on the requirements. In doing this the older scouts never forgot the skills learn and even improved on then when they had to teach it to others. My Last year as a scout is when they dropped the skill awards and the older scouts had real hard time planning meeting to help the advancements of the young boys. I'm sure this changed once scout got use to the new program.

  3. I have a question on Historical Trail patches and Medals.

I'm planning a trip to Gettysburg Battlefield for my Cub Scout den.

While I was planning it I thought that my Niece (who is in Girls Scouts) would love to attend this event. Now here is my question. Are Girls Scouts allow earning Patches and Medals dealing with Historical trails (not sure if they are just for Boy Scout) or is just like earning wolf or bear badge?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

  4. "Two important challenges in preparing youth for the 21st centuryparticularly in today's increasingly automated and sedentary cultureare physical fitness and good health. Every adult leader for the year 2002 should set the example and contribute directly to the health and fitness of today's Scouts by completing requirements for the BSA Physical Fitness Award."

The award requirement do not say this is just a 2002 award! I did find the above statement but its not stating that is is only a one shot deal.

  5. All,

I received an email right after I post

this thread and it pointed me to the BSA Northern Tier National High Adventure Trading Post. The price of the jack was about $115 even though its post on their

web site as $90. I have never owned one of these Jacket but I've worn Civil War era uniforms (that are Wool)when I do living history events for the public.

These uniforms do not break the wind either but its all about the layering of your clothing.

  6. This year was my son's first PWD. We sat down and he designed the Car into a pick up truck. I cut the car out because he just did not want to. He did come up to me and ask me to add little details on the truck and I did. He picked out the color and he would have painted it if we did not run out of time. He drew some picture on the truck and then I added the wheels.

At the race I watched as his car came in last 3 times and 3rd once. I felt bad and asked him how he felt. He told me with a big grin that he won every race. I said I thought that he came in last and He said yes but still won. I will not worry about how he does in anymore PWD. I also love watching the one scout with the car straight out of the box tire up the track. There is always one every couple of years. To me its always the Adults that cause the problems.

  7. All,

Im going to ask a question that I think I already know the answer to.

Im an Eagle Scout but have not been involved with Scout since 1992.

I became a Tiger Cub Den Leader in the fall when my son joined up.

It was announced to the Pack during a Bobcat ceremony that this badge is very important and that all Scouts have to earn it before any other badge is earned all the way up to Eagle Scout. I questioned the leaders about that statement at the Committee meeting and was told that in fact that statement is true.

I looked though my sons Tiger Cub book and the Wolf book that I bought and no statement of any kind other then Bobcat needs to be earned before any other Cub Scout rank is earned. I just cant believe this statement unless I see it in writing. There is no way a boy that joins Boy Scouts that was never in Cub Scout (for what ever reason) should be punished and never be allowed to earn rank? Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts help each other out but really dont have any thing to do with each others Rank!

Is this statement true about Bobcat Rank true?

    Thanks,

  8. I think the pants are okay and the ones I had when I was boy where great and still are. Did my troop wear our uniform when we where camping? The answer is NO! None of use wanted to mess them up. We look at our uniforms as dress uniform for meeting & church. I never ware out any uniform pants I had when I was a boy. Now, I did out grow them a couple of time.

  9. All

I read a post here in the past month talking about a place where you can get the red wool jac-shirt at a cheaper price.

I searched for it but did not find it.

If someone has the web link could they please email it to me?

    Thanks,
