  1. The way the requirement should read

    While a Star Scout, teach a younger Scout the skills from ONE of the following seven choices, so that he is prepared to pass those requirements to his unit leader's satisfaction.

    Second Class - 7a and 7c (first aid)

    Second Class - 1a (outdoor skills)

    Second Class - 3c, 3d, 3e, and 3f (cooking/camping)

    First Class - 8a, 8b, 8c, and 8d (first aid)

    First Class - 1, 7a, and 7b (outdoor skills)

    First Class - 4a, 4b, and 4d (cooking/camping)

    Three requirements from one of the Eagle-required merit badges, as approved by your unit leader.

    This allows the use of any method that will work for the teaching Scout and the Scout being taught.

  2. Who's talking about private party sales? I thought we were talking about walking into a store and buying something! And if ya do that, you will probably pay tax on the item purchased! Why? Because you have to!

  3. >>> All taxes are involuntary.

    Not exactly. Should a person choose, it is possible to not ever directly pay a tobacco tax, gasoline tax, highway toll or property tax. While more difficult, they can also avoid, and certainly can minimize sales taxes, duties and tariffs. Generally the inconvenience of accomplishing this adds additional costs so that a person is better off just playing the tax.

    While it is possible to avoid payroll taxes, it is very difficult to do so legally unless you are very rich.

    The only way to avoid taxes on purchases is illegal. If you want to go that route, be my guest.

  4. Woapalanne, a club that has religious requirements for membership discriminates on the basis of religion (e.g. the BSA). A club that doesn't have such requirements isn't discriminating on the basis of religion.

    A club that has ANY requirement discriminates, religious or otherwise!

  5. That you would advocate violently taking money from others just because you don't want the government to live within its means is morally reprehensible.

    Who is advocating violence?

    If everyone paid the same tax rate, we wouldn't be in this bind! A flat 20% on all income with no loopholes!

  6. Let's see. I might not get this exactly correct.

    Explain - let the Scout know what he skill is and how it is used

    Demonstrate - show the Scout how to do the skill

    Help - have the Scout try the skill while you watch and advise

    Practice - the Scout practices the skill until proficient

    Test - have the Scout show you the skill he has been taught

    Teach - the Scout teaches other Scouts the skill he has just mastered

    So that is EDHPTT which stands for

    ED's

    Helpful and

    Practical

    Teaching

    Technique

  7. But BSA has some ideas about right and wrong that conflict in some ways with the currently fashionable ideas that government seeks to enforce on people and institutions.

    Key word - fashionable - and also the key problem. Fashionable is like being politically correct. Stupid!

  8. I also note that the mandatory exercise skirts exceedingly fine the following guidance of the National Council:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Hazing prohibited. Physical hazing and initiations are prohibited and may not be included as part of any Scouting activity.
    "Bullying prohibited. Verbal, physical, and cyber bullying are prohibited in Scouting.
    "Constructive discipline. Discipline used in Scouting should be constructive and reflect Scoutings values. Corporal punishment is never permitted."
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Really? You could say the same thing about kitchen or latrine clean up! That slope is way to slippery

    And if you feel that way, John, how do you feel about the OA Ordeal?

  9. The 'melting down' is more indicative of a child who does care, who is surprised by the reaction...

    Nah. The meltdown is his way of getting his way. He's not surprised!

    It does seem the unit let this behavior continue. That said, now is the time to nip it in the bud or it will spread and then it will be almost impossible to rein in.

  10. Interesting. If I was on the BOR and aware of these issues, I would not vote to pass this Scout. The written explanation would include the reasons why this Scout was not passed and what he needs to do to pass and a time frame to complete this.

    I would bet dad would toss a major hissy fit and when he didn't get his way, he would pull junior and head to another Troop. And that's OK.

  11. I've never had to NOT sign after a SMC but if I did it would be followed up by a letter to the Scout and a copy to the CC.

    Why would there ever be a reason to NOT sign off on a SMC if one was held? The requirement is to participate in one. Nothing more, nothing less. And does the SMC have to be done prior to the BOR?
