What would have to change if gays were allowed in?
Eagle92 replied to Oak Tree's topic in Issues & Politics
GB, When I was a newlywed, I got sent to summer camp a week after the wedding. Hat to cut short the honeymoon as a result My lovely bride visited me one time, and we were told by the CD that nothing will happen on camp property, we would need to get a room elsewhere. Grant you it wasn't with a troop, but it was a scout camping experience. -

In reference to a double standard, no there isn't. We had a male approach a female staffer, and he was dismissed as well. Don't knwo what happened after he left camp. To play Devil's Advocate for those who state "help other people at all times," remember we also promise 'to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight." -
Language is one of those things that the meaning needs to be taken in context, i.e. usage and context in writings; body language, context, and usage when spoken. Also words meaning do change over time. One moderate example is costume, which originally meant mode of dress. Today the word is more affiliated with acting and Halloween. Another example is the word that originally meant a burning ember used to start fires. In the UK it's slang for cigarette, and in the US a discriminatory word for homosexual.

To be honest I do not believe in AGW for a variety of reasons. 1)If the proponents of AGW truly believed that it was true, they would not try and stifled debate as seen numerous examples of AGW proponents stating that opponents should loose their certification,i.e a meteorologist who disagreed with AGW and had folks asking to revoke his certification; the removal of quesioners from debates, i.e. the recent UN removal of a journalist form Copenhagen; and of course the hacked emails stating that AGW proponents were blackmailing scholarly journals who published articles against AGW. 2)History has shown that there have been in fact periods of cooling and warming. 3) There is enough evidence to show that global warming is part of a natural trend. Now alot of what the environmental movement is for, I am too, but at times it goes to far. I've been told I'm part of the Pinchotian (sp) school of environmentalism.

Didn't think a council could add requirements to Quality Unit Award as that is a national recognition. PLUS the goal of the districts and councils is to get Quality District/Council.

In reference to the Catholic Church, if memory serves, they have a "love the sinner, hate the sin" attitude. But they also believe in not leading folks into temptation as well. -
Ev, Designating Webelos by I and II designation has been happening since Webelos became a 2 year program back in the day. It's comparable to calling the full Field Uniform "Class A" and variations of it 'Class B." Heck some national publications are getting aboard the "Class A" train.

GB, It wouldn't be just the LDS and Catholic units, but other units as well. The unit I that folded was with a private school. Also remember that the LE Exploring Post I mentioned decided to switch from a public CO to a private CO, remember that a unit can switch COs and keep their number and tenure IF the original CO agrees to the transfer, because the parents and members had concerns. As for gays in our midst, yes it happens. We had a youth on summer camp staff that was gay and was sent home b/c he propositioned several members of the staff. Tried to work staff again the next year, but was declined. Don't know what happened to him after that. -
Try getting a vintage red one off EBAY.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

Short, HEHEHE if we go that route, I will be trying to get the district's WFA Instructor to do that, or the venturing crew that handles first aid. Would use our soon to be certified EMT, but he works shooting sports. PLEASE KEEP THE IDEAS COMING!

M L, Gays molesting members. Grant you female leaders can also molest members, but that wasn't the concern. And let's not forget that there is a precedent with homosexuals creating a unit in order to gain access to youth. That happened in the 1970s in New Orleans. When it became knownwas around the time my brothers got out of Scouting. When I did get involved in scouting a decade later, my mother always asked what was going on, etc. She never told me her reason why she "nagged" me about the trips until I did a paper on the topic in college. That's when I found out that a NAMBLA (sp)group created a troop specifically for molesting youth, and did in fact molest a number of them. When I asked my mom about this, she said yes she knew, and that was why she always asked me what was going on.(This message has been edited by eagle92)(This message has been edited by eagle92) -
Ok I'm dense, thought they were going into the custom t-shirt business. If they are proposing rank specific, they are insane as why would anyone buy a shirt that they will only wear for a little while? bas enough with CS, that's why my pack went with 1 custom design t-shirt. I think another idea was to have a bunch of different color shirts vaialble for troops to pick. Why wouldn't a troop just design their own shirts? bad enough that vendors have to keep 2 differnet types of unit numbers and trained strips, at least they don't take up as much room. But shirts? come on.

Spun this off the Webelos thread. In my quest to create an awesome CSDC program I ask What would you do to create a program for Wbelos of both levels. Goal is to have at least 4 dens: Wolves, Bears, Webelos 1 and Webelos 2. If we are lucky we can add a TC den, but know they are few and far between in my area (only 2 last year) I know one future WDL has proposed working on OUTDOORSMAN and FORESTER. I'm a bit old fashione dand think READYMAN should be in there somewhere. All ideas greatly appreciated.

BD, FYI in grad school one of my peers did some research at the national archives and found documents referencing the Japanese as "Nips." Prof said to use either either Japanese or Japs as Nips was offensive. Freind had to explain that he was quoting from a letter from then Admiral Nimitz, CinCPac for the conversation. EDITED: not trying to sound unscoutlike, but trying to show that it is acceptable similar to Aussies for Australians, Kiwis for New Zealanders, Brits for Brtitish and of course Yanks for Americans (although in my part of the woods calling someone a YANK is fighting words )(This message has been edited by eagle92)

Upon reflecting about the Exploring/Venturing split, I remember 1 exploring unit, and heard of others, that maintained their specialty, i.e. police, SAR, etc, but switched from a public entity being the CO to a private entity in order to become Venturing Crews and not have to accept gays. There was a lot of concern by everyone involved.(This message has been edited by eagle92) -

I would say that we would also lose lots of units, scouts, and volunteers in my area, and nationally. A lot of the COs would pull out, a lot of the families would pull out, and alot of the long time volunteers would pull out. I bet there would be an increase in Royal Rangers, Royal Ambassadors, Awana Clubs, etc. I remember when Scouting for All protested in front of the offices of the council in New Orleans (ok it's in the 'burb Metairie). About six people protested in front of the offices, visible to traffic on I-10. The council got numerous calls in support of the BSA and a few parents actually registered their sons in the program b/c when they found out that the BSA did win the Dale decision. For whatever reason they thought the BSA lost the Dale decision and had to allow homosexuals as leaders, and they did not want that. And folks had to use the phonebook to get the council's number as it was not posted anywhere outside the building.(This message has been edited by eagle92) -

Hal, Yep bathwater with the baby. Long story short, they merged with an existing pack. Pack leadership didn't want to have anything with a local Catholic church looking to start their pack and needed leaders. Eventually a new church split form the original CO and they restarted the pack there. Again this was after I left the profession though.(This message has been edited by eagle92) -

One thing I know for a fact would change, we would lose a lot of COs, particularly LDS and Catholic units. I was a DE when the Dale case was headed to the Supreme Court, and we had a very active pack fold b/c the CO did not want to have anything to do with gays. So they dropped the charter in case the BSA lost the decision and gays could become members. No matter what I said about how they select leaders, the court case hasn't even hit the SC yet, etc, they dropped the pack like a sack of hot potatoes. -
Just curious, with the performance T-shirts, do you need to add anything tot he ink to make it stick? We did silk screening at CSDC last year, and I brought an extra performance t-shirt to try it out. GREAT SHIRT, but he design is washing off and blurring now, and I've worn it only a handful of times.

Concur, don't think national should be in the custom t-shirt business.

here's the link on the alternative field uniform thread with links to national http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=246471&p=1

Thought supply already sold them. But I know a council in Maryland is beta testing an "alternative" uniform made by Under Armor that would be and alternative to the field uniform, and more sporty. Know that when researched to post on this, I found that the alternative uniform would be MORE expensive than the current field uniform. if you post a thread to your webpage, I'll find me and post it if you like.

le V, Thanks a bunch, found a pattern and will be makign them shortly. taking a break from beadwork to make mits as i hate the cold. Anyone, I know that the color hat a voyageur indicated place of origin, with the most common color being red for Quebec and/or Montreal. So can someone tell me the color for Louisiana and/or New Orleans? Was thinking about getting a green one to go with the capote, but would rather get something more authentic. Sis-in-law is gonna make it for me. Thanks

Oak, If it seems like I'm jumping on Pint, I apologize as that was not my intetion. Pint is a good bloke, with lots of good info on the happenings on the other side of the pond. And I love the handle as he reminds me of my time at Kingsdown and the activities the service team had at the Kings' Head Rather my commentary is based on the newspaper that published the article. They left out a good bit of info, never quote from the documents, and it appears very much innuendo in referecne to school ties commentary.

In referecne to flood stories, MANY cultures have flood myths, from North America, to Asia, to the Middle East.
