How Many Sea Scouts are there?

Was asked to do a University of Scouting presentation on Sea Scouting, not sure why, but there are no ships in the Council, where can I find National numbers of Ships and Sea Scout youth/adults?

So far I have never been able to get a good answer from the people who should know this sort of thing.

In a speech to Juniata Valley Council in November 06, [2007] Charlie Holmes said

the number of Sea Scouts was 7,000. Assuming the number he quoted was

correct, that suggests the it's closer to 3% (actually 2.8%)[of total Venturers].

At a event a month or so ago there was a boatswains meeting run by Keith Christopher, he said that there are 6,700 and something Sea Scouts.

Eammon: The Wiki figures includes Girl Scouts. Does US Girl Scouting have a Sea Scout element?

From looking at the GSUSA website, I would say no to the question of Sea Scouting in GS. However the BSA's Sea Scouting is coed as it is a subset of Venturing. Pity b/c Sea Scouting is the 2nd oldest program in the BSA, being founded in 1912.

Mrs Chugs group is a Sea Scout group, and it celebrates its centenary this year. The Girl Guides (UK equivalent of Girl Scouts) ran a Sea Ranger programme until 1973. I thought that was the end of Sea Rangers, but apparently some of them split from the Guides and carried on http://www.searangers.org.uk/html/history.html

I have heard (not in our area) of Girl Scout counselors chartering all girl Sea Scout ships; these are frequently called "Mariners" or "Mariner ships." If this is true, they would be registered Sea Scouts (BSA) so including them also as Girl Scouts would be double counting. Or so it would seem.

Did you have a WB reunion at Kingsdown in '95 that went to the King's Head? If so then you saw me as I was the "crazy Yankee" 0on crew that year

If local experience in two councils is any guide, there is no way of knowing how many there are. I'm a vice commodore and we are constantly finding units have disappeared overnight. If you visit an active unit, the numbers you see are nothing like the numbers on council rosters. Whatever figure you come up with is just a guess.

they used to. It was called "Mariner Girl Scouts". for all practical purposes the program is dead. They don't have manuals or insignia.
