This past weekend I attended a local high school graduation. While there, I saw 5 of the 7 young men who were in my Bear Den, graduate. Talk about doing the time warp. It was great to see them all in one place again, but it was also a bit of a shock. The energetic little boys with their sing-song voices that I remember so well were now tall, composed, young men, clutching their high school diplomas ready to head off to college. Where did those 10 years go?

Sadly two of the boys moved away and out of touch. Of the 5 remaining, only 2 stayed in Scouting. On a positive note, both of them reached Eagle and Im proud to say I was the SM at both of their courts of honor.

I like to think that someday, after Ive done the Boy Scout thing Id like to go back and be a den leader again. I imagine that the wisdom Ive (hopefully) gained working with older boys would be of good use with the younger ones.

Maybe Im kidding myself, maybe Im just being nostalgic, maybe Im just getting old. Still I like thinking about it. Somehow it makes me feel better -- and perhaps a little younger.

Now, Class, repeat after me

All right boys, are you ready for today's lesson?

Yes, B-P

Then listen to your teacher. Repeat after me...

I won't grow up.

I won't grow up.

I don't wanna go to school.

I don't wanna go to school.

Just to learn to be a parrot

Just to learn to be a parrot

And recite a silly rule.

And recite a silly rule.

If growing up means it would be

Beneath my dignity to climb a tree

I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow u-p

Not me.

Not I.

Not me.

Not me.

I won't grow up

I won't grow up

I don't wanna wear a tie

I don't wanna wear a tie

Or a serious expression

Or a serious expression

In the middle of July!

In the middle of July!

And if it means I must prepare

To shoulder burdens with a worried air...

I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow u-p

Not me!

Not I.

Not me.

So there!

Never gonna be a man...

I won't!

Like to see somebody try...

And make me!

Anyone who wants to try...

And make me

Turn into a man.

Catch me if you can!

I won't grow up

I won't grow up

I will never even try

I will never even try

I will do what B-P tells me

I will do what B-P tells me

And I'll never ask him why!

And I'll never ask him why!

We won't grow up!

We won't grow up!

We will never grow a day!

We will never grow a day!

And if someone tries to make us

And if someone tries to make us

We will simply run away!

We will simply run away!

I won't grow up.

I won't grow up.

No, I promise that I won't

No, I promise that I won't

I will stay a boy forever

I will stay a boy forever

And be banished if I don't.

And be banished if I don't.

And Neverland will always be

The home of youth and joy and liberty!

I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow u-p

Not me, not me, not me, not me, not me...

No, sir!

Remember, you may get old, but you never ever have to grow up

Now, I have to get home, where are those directions? Here they are "... Second star to the right and straight on til morning"
