us3packrats
Can anyone point me to a resource which explains the symbolism of the elements on each rank badge? I have a parent who would like to include it in an Eagle Ceremony.
scoutldr
All of the rank badges are variations of the scout badge (fleur de lis). Explanations are in the Scout Handbook.
anarchist
us3packrats, What scoutldt said...check out the first class scout section of the hand book...our CC asks scouts to identify the meaning of each "part" of the badge in BoRs...no one "fails" but they all know what to expect next time... us3packrats
Thanks! I knew I had seen it somewhere. Hate to admit that I haven't opened the handbook in a while, though.
jmwalston
Several sites also list the history of the badges. Good source includes: http://www.sageventure.com/history/changes/ The meaning given today for the Star badge is the star represents the five merit badges originally required for the badge, and the Life badge "signifies that the ideals of Scouting have become a part of the Scout's life and character." scoutldr
Interesting trivia...originally, Life came before Star.
jmwalston
Also, originally, First Class was the highest rank; Star, Life, and Eagle were honors.
