  1. We voted back in the day on Webelos patches. It's been a while... :-) Is the Cub Scout Insignia guide linked above old? It shows the options on the pocket. Not stirring the pot here, just observing.

  2. Tico Perez would travel to Commissioner Colleges on weekends. I met him at the Daniel Beard College of Commissioner Science in Davenport, IA a few years ago. 2009?? Anyway, he listened to what we had to say and gave a speech during lunch. Seemed to be a down-to-earth guy.

  3. I have left camp during the day. Sometimes because of an emergency at work (I'm a Sys Admin) and a couple times to take care of family business. We do make sure an adult is available all times. I visit the first year Scouts in the morning at their "Brownsea Island" adventure. Some afternoons I will put on my pack and hike the perimeter of the camp.

When I retire in 18 months I'll just take naps at camp and eat ice cream.

  4. Are we making our own rules? Or, are we reading the GTA as it is written, and proceeding accordingly?

You seem to want to ignore all that verbiage about not holding up a boy because of adults' shortcomings. You also seem to want to ignore the experience of folks who've seen how this stuff has gone on appeal. Isn't that akin to cheating?

Yeah sure, @@Stosh, but this isn't about the kid's 18th birthday and 7 years as a tenderfoot scout.

Lacking other information, this is about the adults not getting their acts together in December to help the boy avoid this situation.

Unless @, you all did tell the boy to line up his BoR, and he blew you all off.

@@qwazse I wasn't Scoutmaster last year. Our Asst. Scoutmaster/Advancement Chairman has been in ill health and passed away a couple days ago. I was left in lurch, but I'm learning a lot.

This is the only Scout we had in this predicament. After reviewing the newer requirements, I determined that it would not take much effort to "do the right thing" and delay the BOR. The Scout in question was a tad disappointed, but it's not the end of the world. (As a side note I'm not convinced he is really "gung-ho" about Scouting...)

I feel better about the whole thing now. The next task is to reconcile Troop Records (handwritten) to our Troop web site (on Troop Web Host) to Council and National. Wish me luck!

  5. I have a young man who finished all of the requirements for Second Class before January 1st EXCEPT for the BOR. He's a two-sport athlete and wasn't available for a while. Does he have to complete the new requirements?

    Thanks!

  6. What's keeping you from joining the OA now? Your nomination does not count against the numbers. Have you camped 15 nights in the last 2 years? (I'm betting that you have camped 15 nights in the last year ;)) Have the committee submit your name! :)

No reasons I can think of. I've only been Scoutmaster for two months, but yes I have enough camping nights. Maybe I will be nominated, perhaps I will not. I just want the boys who are OA to be involved and have an adult to get them to events. Too much sash-and-dash going on.

I may have upset a few folks by missing events to staff a WB course twice in the last three years. WB is frowned upon, as if you are collaborating with the enemy at Council. (LOTS of ancient hard-feelings the locals can't let go of).

  7. We usually leave the selection to the scoutmaster.  He usually considers who has been there the longest and helped the most that is not in OA.  Then he asks them to see if they are interested and would they go through the Ordeal.  Essentially, the scoutmaster is looking for something that is fair and will be used.

I am the Scoutmaster but I'm not an OA member. Interestingly enough. I fumed-out as a scout and have been back in Scouting as an adult for 7 years, 3 with the troop.
