  1. I just finished reading this book this morning. All I can say about this book is WOW. It made we laugh it made me cry, and it made me worried. I would suggest that you read this book, in your free time!, this troop sounded very strong, they had the same scoutmaster for 30 years! But, I believe there is very good info about why scouts do what they do and why. And the traditions that this troop developed and held onto and changed was great, well most of them. I would love to hear other scouters comments on this book.
  2. Good Job Eagle Jedadiah Curry. It is good to hear of a scout that must have enjoyed scouting, I hope you did not burn yourself out as a scout and can contuine in Scouting in some form. Remember to follow the Scout Law throughout your life, and I beleive you will not fail! And lets not forget the Cub Scout Oath, I still use it on my Son. DO YOUR BEST!
  3. From the Scoutmaster Handbook revised 2000 Chapter 15 Trailhead The Boy Scout Uniform Scout Shirt long or short sleeved Scout Pants or Shorts Scout Socks or knee Socks Scout belt and buckle optional (troop not per scout) BSA twill or mesh cap, or campaign hat Scout nerkerchief A boy is not required to have a uniform in order to be a Boy Scout. In accordance with the provisions of the Boy Scout of America congressional charter any imitaton of United States Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps uniforms is prohibited. All of the above was taken out of the
  4. AARRRRGGGGHHHH STOP IT A scout will not be arrested for wearing CAMO, he may be asked to change or leave if someone in powerdislikes CAMO. The BSA beleives that you should only wear the uniform period. CAMO and BLUE JEANS are looked upon as the same OUT OF UNIFORM. Now you may ask, well you should before you jump, how does good old dan know this? I read the leader book. There is no info in the book about CAMO nor on the BSA site. If you could direct me to an offical site, which states Scouts will not wear CAMO, please do.
  5. PC does belong in scouting, as long as it is not taken to extremes. Not allowing the term "retarded" is great! This came from being "PC". How can anyone say that this is not a good thing? And PLEASE do not tell me that terms like the above where not and are not used in by scouts. OGE welcome back I was afraid after your last post that you may have left this discusson board for good, your last post seemed like you where feed up with this board, just keep on keeping on, I have learned a lot from your posts!
  6. Ed Mori How can one exceed the requirments, cleaner, neater, better looking? I do not beleive that pointing out a scout to the entire troop would add any benifit, This is done as a patrol, keep it in the patrol not for entire troop. Is this not the patrol method? You did not comment on the fact that the PL does the inspection, vs the leaders? What are your thoughts on this? Also how many members the troop has would also play a part in this I would think.
  7. a uniform inspection is done at almost every meeting. The Patrol Leaders inspect their patrol than the SPL goes around and the patrols yell out Perfect, if all partol members are in complete uniform (the belt is the most common item missing) If one member is not in complete uniform all the PL has to say is no, they usually try to say what is missing like one belt one hat, but do not have to. Never is a scout name mentioned or pointed at. How about that is that PC?
  8. Sctmom Make sure that this is not a inside joke, when I joined the troop I heard lots of these horror stories, only to find out later that the leaders where just joking with one another (no scouts where around) ( I was confused for the 1st 7 months on what the troop did and did not do). You must come out and ask the Scoutmaster if this is really done. And decide if this is the troop for your son and you. Did you all notice how I slipped around not commenting on if I agree with the practice or not?
  9. Yams? I prefer Sweet Potatoes! I think the discussions can help us as leaders as long as we keep an open mind. I really like to hear (read) what other leaders are thinking on the issues and polices.
  10. My opioin is one of yes the leaders and scouts are on the same rule book for BSA, I do not see how one could say that it is all right for a scout to be a gay but a leader could not. And what if your son was sharing a two man tent with this scout who thought he may be gay? But I also do not think that a gay person can become straight.
  11. BOY oh BOY I should not post when I am tired! Dont got no grammar nor spelling scents! I should add the OA members where all dressed in Native American costumes (the Scouts not the leaders) a big drum was being beat and it was dusk. Much fire and dancing! If you get a chance take your cubs to one of these, it should peak their interest in boy scouting. Of course I ain't got no spelling scents when I am not tired!
  12. Homosexuals are free to their pursuit of happiness and the BSA is free to pursue its path without the company of homosexual leaders. I do not believe the above statement fits with the BSA policy. What I read on the BSA site, it that the BSA will not go looking for gay leaders, they will only remove a leader or scout from the BSA if they come out of the closet! Now imagine this a 17 year old scout is 2 months away from receiving his eagle and in a moment of distress he confines in you that he is gay, You only have one option you must remove him from the troop! The policy is Don't a
  13. Martha Sounds like a great pack meeting! Tapping out is how the boys are selected at the ceremony, it use to be acceptable pratice that the tap was an open hand slap on the chest I think, that sounded like a loud tap. At the one I was at, lst year as a boy scout leader, the SM snuck up behind the scout that was selected and held an feather over his head (the scout did not see this) and a member of the OA would come up to the boy and tap his shoulder to select the scout, it was a very impressive ceremony. I think even if a boy is selected he does not have to enter the OA and do his ordeal
  14. When you said (and I'm not going to waste my time looking it up in some book) you lost the agrument err I mean discussion, IMHO. If you will not even try to see what the policy is you can not be following the policy of the BSA. I have looked it up and I could not find anywhere that said you cannot wear camo, what I read into the policy is you can only wear, the official uniform which is not camo or blue jeans, If some one can direct me to a OFFICAL BSA site or book that states no camo, please do. I do not like the uniform, the shirt is slippery and will not stay tucked in, and the pants r
  15. No The requested URL could not be retrieved But all of the casino stuff came up in a seperate window.
  16. Chippewa29 you really need to sit down with these parents and express what scouting is trying to teach the scouts. I am a new leader this year. Do not count on Scoutmaster Fundamentals to help much, I took the course 2 months into joining and I learned more at the October campout, from another ASM. He summed it up very well for me, I understood about the boys running the patrol, and boys forgetting things (sometimes I feel like a lost and found box)We where watching the 2 youngest patrols cooking dinner and I said it is so hard to watch them and not give them much advice. The other ASM looke
  17. Have you tried cleaning out your history files, temporary internet files, and cookies, to see if this will clear up your repeating post? I enjoy reading what you post but not twice
  18. It is a fine line we walk when signing off of requirements. We must make sure that we do not curb the scouts enthusiasm but make sure he understands the requirements. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, being a newer leader. And how do you keep all of the leaders SM, ASM and CM on the same page on the requirements.
  19. As I see all of the flags being flown, over the last 4 weeks, it makes me feel good! But it makes me sad when I see the flags hung out in the rain and not retired at night. All of the vehicles I see with flags, school bus, autos, semis, trucks, and vans it looks great! But that is not the way to treat the flag! It destroys them! And what in the heck is with the pickem up trucks and the confederate flags! Oh I am in Illinois. Make take on saluting the flag and saying the pledge, how I read the code is that the color guard does not say the pledge or salute during the pledge, they hold th
