  1. How in the wide world of sports did this turn into this?

I thought this would be a fun thread with no right or wrong answers, silly me.

staplerman I am blaming you. :)

but I do agree with you that morally straight is probably the most complex one!

  2. A pet peeve of mine (one of the many I have) is when leaders tell a scout that he should not have dirty hands or clothes because the Scout Law says so.

That is not how I understand that part of the scout law.

    It is

A Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his home and community clean.

When I see the word body in the above I think of in shape, eating correctly, not doing drugs, etc. A Scout is clean in thought word and deeds.

  3. When I hiked Double H and Philmont I wore completely different clothes than when I hiked the Rocky Mountains. When I canoe the boundary Waters I wear completely different clothes then when I am hiking. How can one uniform do all of this?

We had 2 scout wear the new scout pants when hiking the Rockies, I thought they where not heavy enough material for warmth or durability, but they did hold up okay.

  4. Yes I ride mine to scout meetings and NYLT meetings, if my son is not going with me, since he started driving I ride it more to meetings.

I started with mini bikes I would ride it to my explorer meetings. I bought a 1969 Honda 125 in 1970 ride that little bike all over the place. In 1973 I bought a 1970 Honda 750 rode it all over until I moved to the suburbs of Chicago in 1976 from out in the country, I parked it until 10 years ago, I moved back into the country and now ride it again. Five years ago I rebuilt my bike chopped it if you will.

Here is a pic of it, if this works.

  5. Are not the COR the voting members of a council? If any changes are going to happen, it is going to have to come from the COR.

I really do not think council wants the COs to know how much power they have, otherwise they could not do stuff that they want to do, like sell properties, raises and so on.

And IMO most scout leaders do not want that to happen, do they.

  6. And here I thought that by the time the scout has his Eagle Court of Honor the advancement side was pretty much done? But what do I know.

It sounds like most troops are the same with some light stuff and some serious stuff.

I have done one Eagle Charge, a scout said I was the only one that he would allow to do it, the troop has a tradition that only another Eagle Scout can give the charge, boy did that ruffle some feather.

  7. PeteM

I do not believe you can tell someone what their honor should be. I think you could explain to them what Scout's Honor means to you and then have them explain what it means to them. With you going first it may open them up a little or they will just becomes parrots.

  8. Thanks ozemu

There are so many good stories from this scouting stuff!

    packsaddle

I am glad I am not camping with the equipment that I used when I was a scout. I still have my pack from when I was a scout, it is small and heavy. Even little things like rain flys on a tent makes camping easier and more funner!

  9. The last few Eagle Court of Honors I have attended within my troop it seems that they almost becomes Roasts for the Eagle with people coming up to tell funny or humorous stories about the new Eagle.

These are not mean spirited stories.

How are the Eagle Court of Honors that you attend? Are they serious or are they a little more laid back?

  10. Attended a Eagles Court of Honour last weekend for 2 scouts. It was a very good ceremony, meaning I did not mess up to bad.

The troop has a tradition to have all of the Eagle Scouts stand up and give the troop number they where in, town and year they became Eagles. I was asked if I would do the Recognition of Eagles as it is called. I asked all of the Eagles to please stand up, there were 15 that stood up. Had about 10 from the troop so I knew them and the dates that they became Eagle where within the last 8 years. We have 2 ASM that obtained Eagle in the 60s had one from the 80s (one of the Eagles teacher from high school) and one from the 50s. One of the Eagles great grandfathers was there and is an Eagle he announced his troop, town and year of 1932 when he obtained Eagle. It was quite an honour to me to do this.

Talking with this man after the ceremony I was quite taken back when he said he thought it was a lot harder to earn Eagle now than when he was a scout. He went on saying on the kids these days have so many choices in life that it is really a special scout to obtain Eagle these days.

  11. The Devin Hester thing was suppose to have been a little joke. Being that I live in Illinois he is about the only think going on in sports in this area!

Driving to the airport yesterday in Wisc. (do you have any idea how much I get to hear about the packers when I spend a week in Wisc. since I am a Bear fan and live in a suburb of Chicago.) they where talking in the car about tennis players and if the new players are as good as Ashe, Conner, McEnroe, etc..

One of my coworkers said that Conner's said he would play any of the new players as long as the new players had to use wooden rackets.

  12. It took my son 3 COH to get his second class patch. After the meeting I ask the SM about it and he said he forgot, he apologized to my son and said he would get it at the the next COH, he did not get it than either, They gave him his patch at next COH. At this time I volunteered to take over the advancements, I was told it was under control. Two COH later when he was suppose to get his First Class bagde he was forgotten about. I asked the SM about it right than, he was given his First Class patch than, now 2 COH later he was called up and awarded the First Class patch, the SM still said everything was under control. I was really worried if he did make Eagle what would the chance be that his advancement or any other boys would be in order. He is now an Eagle and no question came up about the advancement paperwork, thank goodness. He was not happy about not getting his patches during the COH and getting one twice. But in the long run it really was not that much of an issue and he grew from it.
