Good information.  Our cub Pack is usually camping the day of Jamboree on the Air and I think the Troop camped the same weekend this year.  If setting up a ham radio is easy, then it seems like it would be a cool thing to get into.   I don't know any ham radio operators, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find someone.

find out who offers the radio merit badge in your district and try to hook up with them that camping weekend

  2. Our closest summer camp has 2 or 3 campsites that have a locked power outlet at 1 platform tent.  These are closest to the camp office and staff cabins, so its not a far run for underground cable.

This is a newer add on, and I don't think its advertise, this past year, they offered a half week Webelos Resident camp, followed by a half week of Special needs camping, Our local Autistic/Special Needs Troop went for a true camp experience without the hassle of being there for a full week.  This was a first for may of those boys.

Most leaders I have dealt with in the past either bring a battery box, or go without.

  3. Our Troop dues is $60 (plus $12 if you want boys life)

If you crossed over from Cub Scouts, the first year only cost $30 (since your National registration is already covered)

Includes (given on your first year) Class B, Custom Neckerchief, scout slide, Custom Hat, Unit number patch (still rocking 85 year patches)

Most "normal" camp outs are $20

Out of state or high cost are case by case.  Last year they went to Boston for the weekend and did the freedom trail, camped as Hanscom Airforce Base and visited some museums for $60

Summer camp is paid by the scout.

We do some fundraising, and 50% of all profits go the scouts individual scout account.  Troop gives camper-ships on a case by case basis

  4. My son wears a FOS one from 2014

My daughter has already picked out a FOS from 2016.

My cubscout leader shirt has the Standard Issue

My Boyscout leader shirt has the Standard as well

My District Committe shirt has a local Scout Camp CSP for out council

My Red JacShirt will have a Standard 1970's CSP once i get around to sewing it

  5. ... or how skinny you are. My brother had to get a customized shirt when he was the Cubmaster for his first son's Pack; he is 6'2 but has a 14" neck and a 31" waist. Oh, and his arm span is 6'5 (long, ropey arms define the anatomy of my family. We're basically built like gibbons, lol).

Luckily I am much shorter and not quite as slender as he is, so I get by with my off-the-rack shirt for now. But I am saving up for a nice, new, well-fitted shirt and fitted pants so that my Scout uniform can fit as nicely as the rest of my wardrobe. Thanks for letting me know the price range for these things!

the price range is really what makes the difference in my mind.  Originally my wife was thinking to take a shirt to a professional to get tailored, but its worth it to just buy a custom fit

  6. I'm not sure. I've never had to take advantage of this service, so I'm not familiar with their pricing. I'm sure it would be customized depending on the amount of work needed to be done.

actually just emailed them and got a respone, range is $69.99 up to  $89.99

I do not see a reason why you may need a custom unless you are too tall.

I’m 6’2’’, average weight, and a Adult Large is big on me.

Sometimes its not the how tall you are, but how big your belly is

  7. this years summer camp we have 6 leaders and 20 scouts, worked well, because we camped in state, only 40 mins away from home.  I myself had to duck out for a day to write the schedule for work, the Scoutmaster had to leave for a day, and another assistant left 3-4 times throughout the week.  Myself and 2 other leaders took SM/ASM Training the first 3 days, and it still left 2 leaders at all times available to the boys.

We had enough Boys for their free extra leaders, and split the cost for the extra 2 between the 6 of us.

With the new requirements, it will limit only regisitered leaders with YPT to attend, which all of our 6 are.

  8. I’m on Venturing and our crew has been discussing the impact this decision will have on us. One question we had that we didn’t see answered by bsa was will Venturing even be around? Isn’t having Venturing redundant to the whole girls in scouting thing?

By the way our female leaders have already said they will stay with Venturing and have no interest in Boy scouting.

Maybe I am mistaken, but isn't Venturing ment to be HIGHER "Venturing" then normal scouts?  Going on more challenging trips then local "car camping".   In my mind, Boy Scouts from 11-14 would be time to work on merit badges and eagle, and assuming they get their eagle before 18, they would then join Venturing to stay motivated in Scouting.  I have had a few 14 year old Eagle Scouts that drifted away because there was "nothing left" for them to do, I always promote Venturing as the next step.

  9. The supply division offers made-to-measure uniform shirts and pants.  Just fill out the form and submit it to the supply division. You can also turn it in at a national Scout Shop, too.

You can have minor changes to an off-the-rack shirt or pants, or have major changes done if you need something built from scratch:

I've had fellow Scouters use this service and they were happy with the results.

do you know if there was much of a price difference between made to measure vs normal ones at the scout shop?

  10. Long time stalker, first time joiner....

    Took the "plunge" and regisitered.

Hi, My name is Scott, and I am part of Pine Tree Council in Maine.  I am originally from Ohio, and was a cub and boy scout under Dan Beard Council.

Once my son turned 6, we joined a local pack in Maine, I joined as the Tiger Leader, and within 6 months was the new Committe Chairman as well.  I continued being Den Leader untill he crossed to Boy Scouts, and finally passed on Committee Chair as well.  During that time I also did a short time as District Cub Scout Roundtable Assistant Comminsior as well.

Now that he is in Boy Scouts, I have taken on the role of Assistant Scoutmaster, and wow, what a change (for the good!).  With all of my "free time" I have also take the role of District Program Chair.

Looking forward to more years to come.

    Scott
