  1. I'm looking at mertibadge.org and 9B says something different. I'm now confused as to what the current/correct requirement is.

    9. Show experience in camping by doing the following:

    a. Camp a total of at least 20 days and 20 nights.* Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. The 20 days and 20 nights must be at a designated Scouting activity or event. You may use a week of long-term camp toward this requirement. If the camp provides a tent that has already been pitched, you need not pitch your own tent. *All campouts since becoming a Boy Scout or Varsity Scout may count toward this requirement. b. On any of these camping experiences, you must do TWO of the following, only with proper preparation and under qualified supervision: 1. Hike up a mountain, gaining at least 1,000 vertical feet. 2. Backpack, snowshoe, or cross-country ski for at least 4 miles. 3. Take a bike trip of at least 15 miles or at least four hours. 4. Take a nonmotorized trip on the water of at least four hours or 5 miles. 5. Plan and carry out an overnight snow camping experience. 6. Rappel down a rappel route of 30 feet or more. c. Perform a conservation project approved by the landowner or land managing agency.
  2. How long have you been at the new troop now? Are all of the requirements signed off? Is waiting a month or two more going to prevent your son from reaching Eagle?

If it were me, I would say wait a couple of months, at least, in the new troop. Give the Scoutmaster and the Members of the Committee get to know your son a little, and then have a new SM conference and a new BOR.

That's what I would suggest a youth who transferred to my unit under those circumstances. In the meantime, make sure the new scout is fully integrated into the troop. Signed up for all activities and especially all service projects. Show he is a first class scout (not just First Class rank ;) ). The couple of extra months will give him more experience than butting his head at the other troop would.

Unless he is 16.5 there is no rush to get First Class. Is he 16.5?

  3. That's it?  A bland "we met with the DE and the issue is resolved"?  No details?  Now how the heck are we supposed to know if our high dudgeon was worth it?

That's about as high drama as the meeting was.

DE: "Do you want to do this as a District activity?"

    Committee: "No"

    DE: "Ok, next agenda item."

Like I said, I think the people who told us the district wanted to take over were reading too much into it.

  4. I took it a few years ago so I'm not sure how it has changed but it was a condensed road to first class. I've been camping for more decades than I care to admit and I have advanced first aid certifications. I thought I knew it all when I went to the training but I still managed to learn a lot and have a good time.

Go with an open mind and remain with your patrol. I'd advise against going to eat with your troop. Afterall, would you want your kids who are going through NYLT sneaking away to go join your troop at summer camp?

  5. Maybe he's a chili head. Yes, that is a thing. There is even a convention in Santa Fe once a year. I've had ghost peppers before. I eat them stuffed in Jalapeño poppers. I've made salsa out of them. I frequently have dried ones, and their hotter cousin the Trinidad Scorpion, in my pantry.

If someone said to me, "I'll give you $100 towards your troop for each ghost pepper that you eat." I'd say game on. I might not get to 23 but I'd sure try.

Some here would run laps for 24 hours as a fund raiser. I'd say thanks but no thanks. To each their own.

  6. If your troop is looking to fundraise through something like a tree stand, can the council come in and take it over?

Can they say something to the effect of: well Troop Z your tree stand is too successful and we think that it should be a council stand instead of your troop. Troop X has more people to staff it so they will be primary and share the revenue among all the troops in the council.

  7. I was always the new kid in school. I was also the risk taker.

Jr. High was challenging. I only had a couple of friends. I was always getting picked on for something or another. I was never one to back down from a confrontation and ended up with more than my fair share of bloody noses.

Once I got to High School and joined the wrestling team I stopped getting picked on. In High School I bounced around social groups. I would eat lunch one day with my wrestling team buddies, the next with the geeks that no one would talk to. Had good friends with some punks (the spikey haired type). I always made it a point to befriend those whom others avoided. I still do in a way.

  8. I am a severe dyslexic and a horrible speller. My dad, an english professor type, used to return my Father's Day cards with all the misspellings circled in red. One year I got a copy of the Bad Spellers Dictionary in return.

There is a lot of scouring in OA; my son and I always pull kitchen duty LOL.

My dyslexic son taught me two things recently:

    1) If life gives you melons, you might be dyslexic

    2) Dyslexics are teople poo.

;) He loves finding all the dyslexic jokes and puns.

  9. As all things post BoR, not relevant under mandatory BSA procedures to the rank advancement approved by the BoR .

    4.2.1.4 The Scout Is Recognized

When the board of review has approved his advancement, the Scout deserves recognition as soon as possible. This should be done at a ceremony at the next unit meeting. His achievement may be recognized again later, during a formal court of honor.

I wasn't talking about the rank that was taken back. I was talking about the next rank, Star in this case. And, again, it depends on the offence.

  10. Having just read another thread about a scout making a huge mistake while at summer camp makes me wonder what this scout did in order to be sent home from a camping trip.

I would not pull the rank. The guide to advancement is pretty clear on this. Once the requirements are signed, they are done. Nothing can be added to the requirements. However, if there was some egregious transgression, I may hold off on some of the signatures for the next rank until the behavior was corrected.

  11. On the descent, the troop was split by ability into smaller hiking groups. His 16 year old son was leading another group that started the descent earlier.

I just read the part about his 16 year old son leading his group out. It brought tears to my eyes and a knot to my throat imagining my own sons in a similar situation. That scout deserves an award... although he'd probably rather have his dad back.

  12. Would a good summary be "If transportation is part of the event (i.e., reflected on a tour plan), the scout can't drive (except in the exceptions above).  If transportation is not part of the event, then he can." ?

Or, just paraphrasing here, "If transportation is part of the event (i.e., reflected on a tour plan), the scout can't drive (except for when he can).  If transportation is not part of the event, then he can (unless he can't). ;)

  13. I think that except for people involved in the OA, very few Scouters even know there is an "Area" in the organizational chart between Region and Council. I know it exists but have never seen any actual evidence of it as a Scouter (not counting this forum.) I have known a couple of people who wore the "Regional Committee" committee patch but have never seen anyone wearing Area insignia. I wonder if the BSA could merge the Areas into the Regions and save some money, without sacrificing whatever it is that they do.  Of course, some people in this forum would be happy to do away with National and/or councils as well.   :)

Actually that would be a Section, not an Area. You have Sectional Conclaves.

  14. Bingo!

It's a Chick-Fil-A. And, oh yeah, I'm in Massachusetts. Does this help fill in the blanks?

The initial argument I got was largely social/religious. Then it turned to it being a business. What really irks me is that many people are trying to make a social statement and don't really care what the rules say (or don't say).

So, now that you have the whole picture, what do you think?

Well, you could have done a Hooters and fewer people might have complained. ;)
