  1. BDPT00 is correct: " I don't consider it to be a "color guard." It's a "flag detail.""

Scouts cannot, under BSA rules, be a Color GUARD, because, to guard, the unit must be armed. (In another life, I am Captain of a real Color Guard unit. An armed unit.)

However, that is a minor point, lost on most civilians. (As is the fact that a Color Guard never bows and closes eyes during prayers.)

I do prefer the term "Flag Detail" as well, since it is more accurate and emphasises the fact that we are not a military organization.

  2. When I was a Unit Leader, I had one occasion where a Scout continued talking to his buddies after the speaker started. Politely asked the speaker for a moment, went to the boy and said "Since you consider what you say to be more important than our guest, please get up on the podium and tell everybody." It never happened again.

  3. I had an interesting experience re the different flap borders. Some years ago a job transfer moved me halfway across the country. I promptly transferred my membership to the new Council and Lodge to continue to serve. Of course, I sewed on the new CSP and proper lodge flap. First Camporee, another Scouter walked up to me and said "You have the wrong OA flap on." (No introduction, no welcome.) I said "Pardon me?... I don't think so." He said "That's a Vigil flap and I know every Vigil in this council." I replied "Evidently you don't." I then introduced myself and courteously showed him my Vigil card from my prior lodge.

I would like to say that led to a friendship. Unfortunately, it didn't.

  4. But of course the tartan looks like the Webelos neckerchief. From the UK official website: "Worn by the 'Webelos' Cub Scouts. Copied from a neckerchief belonging to Philip M Smith 2000."

  5. If you look in the right place online, there is a picture of me at the 2010 Jamboree, wearing a uniform shirt with an 1981 Jamboree patch - it's the first one I went to. (Also in a kilt, but that's another thread.) Nobody made any adverse comment whatsoever.

  6. "Day-month-year" IS more logical (and we use it verbally all the time - as in "Camp starts the 5th of April."). Everybody in the world except U. S. civilians use that format, so it is easy to remember: If it's not U.S. civilians talking, then the first number is the day. (As a ham operator, all my records and logs are in that format, as well as in UTC time. It's when I have to convert from DMY that I get confused......)

  7. Nope. McDonald's is a private business and not chartered. Now, if they were the FIRST to come up with a "hamburger", they could register that as a trademark, once they traded in interstate commerce. Since they did not, and have never had a "hamburger" that was even above average, they are clearly not eligible for ANY governmental protection of the name. The city would be the one eligible for that claim, imo.

(And THIS people disagrees that theirs are the best fries. They are good, not the best.)(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)

  8. Where did you get the idea that conservatives would be against anything international?? I'm as conservative as it gets. I travel internationally extensively, and as a ham op, talk to people from literally hundreds of countries. I have HUGE respect for other cultures, peoples, religions and customs. That's WHY I'm so conservative politically. I believe people need to be free to practice their own cultures, religions, etc.
