  1. Then, if you're in an active district, take all the group training you can find - adult leader training, pow-wow, whatever - not only for the actual learning, but getting to know the folks around you. It's all about networking - not to mention that it's kinda fun to go to district/council events and know people!

  2. >But I did think it was deliciously ironic that this thread (Government Corruption) appeared the same day that Gov. Palin was censured by the Alaska legislature for abuse of authority. >

Umm, Trev, actually she wasn't censured - that's a really significant action and an accusation not to be thrown around lightly. The legislature could still do that (all news outlets agree that it's unlikely), but the panel only concluded that there was a breach of ethics in that she allowed undue pressure to be applied by her husband, Todd, at various times in attempting to get the trooper fired. It also concluded that she was within her rights as Governor to dismiss the public safety commissioner (the trooper's boss).

Which is really too bad, because by all accounts this trooper should have been fired strictly on his own pattern of bad behavior.

  3. Hmmm, I'm a PM MB counselor - I believe I could get him through it. A lot of that badge is discussion based on knowledge of various financial concepts. The 13 weeks of record keeping could be assisted by an adult, much along the lines OGE suggests - done on a computer, he might be able to handle it himself if his keyboard has a 10-key.

My nephew had severe dyslexia (I say had, not because he got over it, you don't, but because he has passed away). Letters and numbers just kept moving around on him - he said the only way he "managed" it was to memorize the alphabet and numbers in any direction they could appear to him. What a task.

  4. >Since that time, there has not been a single campaign that has been civil and devoid of dirty tricks. Closest one to it was Carter/Ford, both good guys in my opinion.

    What changed?>

Actually, civility is only rarely the norm for a campaign. Google "yellow journalism" - the term was coined in the late 1800's but sensationalistic "journalism" was going on long before that and included political "journalism." I went to the new Lincoln museum in Springfield last summer - some of the headlines/news stories published during his election runs would have resulted in lawsuits today.

It's just same stuff, different day.

  5. >Personally, I am not going to say anything to a Scout who takes pride in his membership and wears his sash proudly to a Court of Honor. >

Me, neither - especially not in our troop which is not very active in the OA. Not to mention that I'm not known as a member of the UP and don't aspire to it.

  6. John, where did you pick up gender info from what ST posted? Just curious.

"That said, she was an Assistant Scoutmaster. She works for the Troop under the supervision of the Scoutmaster. She has three recourses if she has issue with how the SM does things: "

  7. (sigh) too late to the party. Strikes me y'all just didn't give scoutingtexas the answer he wanted - we needed to help him sabotage a "friendship" by burying him in paperwork which was specifically directed at aforementioned "friend"!

Wow, at the risk of being accused of piling on, how's that old saw go - with friends like that, who needs enemies?

As John pointed out early on - you work for the SM, if you can't do that, then join the committee and deal with it. But as Lisa pointed out, forms sure aren't going to do it. That's a coward's way out.

  8. I guess I'd also want to know where the adult leadership was while the scouts were trashing the place and leaving the debris? And during the other "unruly" moments? There's a huge gap, to my mind, between boy-led and adult-abandoned. I think perhaps some serious service work for the CO is in order - probably a better option than being banned, but that's water under the bridge at this point. Still something that could be offered when you're allowed back into the facility.

Were the BOR's specifically to address the issues? If so, had the scouts already had a SM conference? In any event, I don't think banning BORs during the off-site period is the answer. I do think the SM should have some talks with scouts concerning scout spirit, however...

Last, but not least, IMO, BORs should be held whenever all parties can conveniently convene, not at regularly scheduled, adult-only convenient, times. But there are other threads that cover that issue.

  9. Oh, you'll find other threads gone silly - oh, wait! Would that be silly string?

If you created a theory concerning threads gone silly, would that be string theory? Oh, oh, that would account for the very tiny bit of gravity here amongst all the levity!!

  10. Interesting. This came up in another thread too awhile back. In my council, you don't have a choice about who you work with. You can say no to a specific scout, but it says right on the form that your information will be available council-wide. You also don't have a choice about having your information published on the MBC web-site maintained by the council.

I counsel four MBs (the maximum allowed by my council) - I think about 1/3 of the scouts I've worked with have been from outside of my troop.

Actually, you do have a choice - you can choose not to be a MBC.

  11. Nobody bit before I got here!! Creedence Clearwater Revival! What do I win, Dom Pardo?

OGE, was that "guys" in the generic sense? (VBG - hey, I got a rep to maintain!)

Did I come within a mile of the topic? What was it again? Oh, yeah, staying on topic.

Divin' down the rabbithole - OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!

  12. I feel your pain.

Obviously you've manually dried the ceiling and floor above as best you can. My only other thought is if you have a couple of fans, point them at the wetness above and below and keep that air moving. Make sure you flip the circuit on that light fixture before you touch it.

    Good luck!

  13. Scoutmom, welcome to the forum.

Please note Mr. Boyce clarified his point when he wrote, in response to me, "People are not 100% rational, nor do they follow the rules 100% of the time. The BSA, by encouraging female leaders, gets some new problems in addition to other gains and positives."

This is true, as the original thread subject proves, so taking issue with his original post without considering the clarification in subsequent posts doesn't seem, to me, to be very helpful.

Also, without trying to take your post on anything but its face value, I hope you were intentionally overstating your case. I'm not in scouting because my beloved wouldn't do it (although he wouldn't, he was more into Cubs), I'm in scouting because I like it. Hopefully you are, too.

Please try to take the above in the intended spirit of courtesy and kindness,

    Vicki

  14. I wrote, "The answer to that is the troop committee can nominate one eligible adult per 50 scouts per year. The OA officers in your lodge can help with the explanation on that one. It's normally done during a troop meeting."

Should have said a troop committee meeting. The result is then given to the OA election team when they come to do the troop election.

  15. Sounds to me like rdcrisco is asking two questions which are getting mixed together:

    1) How do I get the Scouts involved/some elected to OA? The answer to that one is have an OA election team come out and explain the process - as many scouts who fulfill the requirements can be elected by the troop as a whole. This election can either be held during a troop meeting or at summer camp. My personal preference is summer camp - after all, it is an honorary camping and service society.

    2) How do I get an adult leader involved/nominated to OA (since the troop committee does not want scout-aged OA members going off on OA events on their own)? The answer to that is the troop committee can nominate one eligible adult per 50 scouts per year. The OA officers in your lodge can help with the explanation on that one. It's normally done during a troop meeting. Adult eligibility is basically the same as scout eligibility. The difference for adults is that the criteria for nomination, once eligibility is established, is, "who can best serve the youth needs of the lodge."

Google Order of the Arrow. Check out the national website. There are some local mileage variances, but the basic requirements concerning eligibility should be the same. Call your local scout office - the camping person will be able to put you in touch with your local lodge.
