  1. congratulations

1,look to the wolf book there are plenty of good ideas there.

2,keep it simple and fast moving don't get to complicated a project till you know what the boys are capable of.

3, get them outside when weather permits.

    4, have fun!

remember they will look up to you and almost anything you plan they will have fun with even if it does not go as well as YOU like. Boys that age are easy to please.

  2. I understand the theory that 5 weak troops will have the volunteer's pot maximum effort in to recruiting boys so they don't fold but. that is just effort taken away from the boys. in by town we have 5 troops usually 1 or 2 strong 2 so so and 1 weak the troops grow and shrink but total available boys are about what national expects. the newest 2 troops were started by people who wanted to be SM to there sons then left. only 1 troop has a permanent meeting place provided by their CO. our problem is only 3 cub packs and per national's numbers not enough cubs for the population. council doesn't care DE talks about working on the cub side but can't seen to get anything going and o yea word is another CM wants his own troop!!

  3. I've seen this form orone like it used parents need to know at round up they must do something to help

  4. This might be an option

when I took over as Scoutmaster there was a youth that was not deserving of eagle (in my mind) the former scoutmaster wanted to try to remove the youth prior to my taking over I said I wanted to work with him well bringing weapons (blackjack) Alcohol wrapped up in his sleeping bag (alleged by other youth) Swearing and cursing at me, refusing to listen to the SPL leaving camp after hours (had the whole summer camp staff up looking for him ect. I told him I did not see how I could in good conscience sign him off for scout spirit. the cc saw all of this happen at summer camp and agreed with me as did all present.

so 3 months before his 18th birthday he found another troop and SM to sign his book and got eagle there. right or wrong district never said a word..

  5. Can I ask a question?

Why start a new troop is there no existing troop in the area?

Are the existing troops to big?

The reason I ask is in my town we have 5 troops and 3 cubpacks. the cub numbers are low per what national says it should be based on our population. the troop numbers are about right. two of the troops in town were started by well meaning people who wanted to be scoutmaster to their kids, then they left The other 3 troops have long history's in town. The troops spend a lot of effort competing for w2's (energy that should be spent on the boys)so I hope you have two many cubs for the troops in your community.

  6. There should never be intentional roadblocks to a boys advancement that said. I don't see an attendance policy as a roadblock either. we have a policy that 50% attendance (campouts)is required to be considered Active in the troop. this is not a problem for the younger scouts. what we have found is it can be an issue for older scouts seniors in high school usually as they get involved in more things. parents sometimes complain about the rule but the rule is the rule and no boy who worked with the troop has ever been held back (sometimes we end up with extra outings ) the rule is the rule and learning how to manage your time is just another part growing up as is dealing with the consequences of your choices. now the boy who just made 50% campouts to get life and then only went on 2 outings the rest of the year and his mom screamed at me I couldn't hold that against him i have no Patience for. he was warned repeatedly. well mommy wanted him to be eaglr so bad they found a troop 2 1/2 from his 18th birthday that told him he didnot need to do any outings at all and they gave him his eagle as monny wanted. I wonder what he learned?

  7. The town I'm in has 3 packs and 5 troops recruitment is always an issue this year we had a great crossover 9 boys out of 14 W2's in town I asked the parents why us this year as we want to continue to improve our troop 3 things came out

1 one of the 17 year olds took a few minutes to talk with a W2 and he decided we were the place for him this young convinced some of his friends to come to us.

2 the adults sat and talked about boyscouts and how it is different from cubscouts Ie: boys doing the leading both the good and not so good(chaos and confusion).

3 the boys had fun at the open house that was put on and run by my boys they did what was fun to them and it showed on the W2's

and finally these new parnts could see and did comment who was a eaglemill who was adult run webelos 3.

youcan explain how boyscouts is different from cubs all day but seeing the boys do there thing seemed to make a bigger impresion than anything we could say

  8. After a couple of slim years (my twn has 3 packs for 5 troops) we had a group of 7 W'2 who committed 5 weeks before there crossover and just started showing up every Tuesday after a bit of panic on the spl sincehe had to change plans quickly he just started teaching them troop camping skills tent setup/care stove setup clean up even some cooking lessons the w2's had fun learned a bit and now that all of the w2's in town are crossed over they are on to a great start. just have the spl make it fun for them and they still get there spcial day in the pack (half the troop left out campout to attend their crossover and then returned) seems they are fond of the new scouts.

  9. Dad's (and Mom's) will always want juinor to do well and winning is fun. when I was in the Pack with my sons we worked together to build the car my boys wanted funny looking nice paint pokeman ect. my boys and I always talked about what we could do to make the car faster (our secret weapon as it were) usually did not win. we did win a couple of times. I personally wanted the boys to have fun! and by the end of cubs I had a lot of fun trying to build what my son's imagined. Our pack had all the usual rules, but the cubmaster had awards for slowest (biggest trophy) and most unusual car (became a favorite competition)

any way if I went off topic I'm sorry. you were there you decided with the best interest of the boys at heart let the decision stand. don't second guess yourself.

  10. Sorry guys If I was unclear I'm a scoutmaster who was there to receive a scout and I was surprised by the amount of flame and just wanted to know other wiser peoples recommendations as to who if anyone I should mention it to. and jes I love this scouting stuff

  11. I was quick to put my quote it goes in the fire it stays in the fire my experienced scouts normally are the first one to tell another boy that one liner,so I guess it works.

What I want to talk about now troubles me. I was invited to a cross over ceremony at a pack I don't usually get kids from it was a great ceremony obviously lots of committed leaders what bothers me is they have a tradition they tell the Webelo 2's that a neckerchif that burns without being consumed means the boys are ready for boyscouts.

when they put a match to the neckerchief (on a music stand )there was a 3 foot+flame and burning fuel (acetone)dripping on the school stage this was indoors!! I told several leaders that I felt the display was not in keeping with the spirit of the G2SS. I'm not sure they saw it my way as I was told "that's why the boys don't light it". have any of you guys heard of this tradition? after reading of the NJ tragedy I didn't sleep well last night. I'm not sure what else I should do I don't want the reputation of a trouble maker. I've told the leaders go to the commissioners all would know it was me? go to the DE? what do you all say

  12. I'm new to posting but been reading for some time I say education is the only way to prevent this type of thing. I've seen liquid fuel stoves spill raw gas when they were being lit before they were up to temp. I've seen propane ignite when a young scout tried to unhook a stove from a tree that had a lantern on top. If you ask new scouts what they like on camp outs most will mention fire close to the top of their list.so even though this was horse play of a sort accidents happen I try to teach fire safety. but the only thing we as adults can do is keep a close eye on the boys when fire is involved, while trying not to be to obvious.
