  1. I have a lot of experience with cold weather camping. 10 years serving in the Army, where you are sleeping in the elements all year with or without the right equipment. Spent 5 days in winter in Alaska running in place it was so cold and we had NO winter kit. As for civi street. I live in Switzerland, and camp a lot in the winter either in snow holes or in the open in tents in the snow.

So if I may add to this discussion about 4 season tents. My troop has The North Face Rock 22s and 32s. These are three season tents. I have also several tents I use, and one thing I can say is that the 4 season tents hold up better in wet weather then the three season ones do. My Hillebergs are all four season tents, and I've NEVER been wet in one of them. Even my family tent which is the Hilleberg Atlas 8 man tent is perfect and better in the rain and all weather. I think that before you invest in a tent you should look at when your going to use it, and how often. I'm out camping every month outside of Scouting. I camp more then my troop does. And I have been lucky enough to have a job testing tents and equipment. So buying a tent is an investment. Don't let others who don't see the weather decide for you. You have to look at it yourself.

  2. I didn't say that this wasn't happening. What I was refering to was that my TG understands, and is in contact contact with me. We talk on FB almost everyday in fact. She knows my progress. But when I tell her I've finished something she's not asking me for a book on what I did. She asks me, but she also trusts me.

I'll be aTG next year. So this information you guys are giving me will come in handy. Thanks.

  3. I know we had several on our course without more then YP and specific training. Outdoor Leadership was not attended by all either.

I also read where to be considered a "Trained" Leader depends on the job you hold in the Troop. Example if your a Committee Person, then you don't need the OutDoor Leaders Course. But who decides you are Trained? I have attended all of the basic course, and also WB. I plan to go to PLC to better myself more. But what other course are there out there to help?

  4. Sadly, I'm in a mixed Culture Troop. Half of the boys aren't American. They are English/Welsh. And the leadership is also English etc.. Until our new adults and boys get older and take back control this will be the norm. The US Troops have it made. Your dealing with Americans. Not over here in TAC. We deal with Europeans.

  5. No excuses. It's just that I'm not the SM of my Troop. My son wears full uniform, and so do I. but I can't force my Troop. But that's another story. If I one day become the SM, then I will start this. But for the moment it's not up to me.. So getting them into a Scout shirt is already a big thing here.

  6. This I can understand.. I see that although it doesn't NEED to be several different courses of WB. I do see the need for the different programs to develop something better serving each program. I can understand the problem though. I like WB. I think I learned a lot. But like I said above, it missed a lot of what I would consider the most important, sure it covers a lot, but not most. One of my patrol members in my WB course also voiced this opinion.. The Director told him, he agreed. I too agreed with him. And again after seeing many of the Cub Leaders, they were learning most for the first time..

  7. Sorry, but I think that is wrong. This isn't the military. and the boy had an excuse. But not being about to Salute the flag as usual is wrong. I think that that is exclusion.. not what I want any boy to feel in my troop. In the field, do they wear 1000% uniforms for morning and evening Flags? I know at Summer camp we do, but a weekend camp out?
