  1. I was told at a camp that a boy had sleepwalked right over to a gully and over the edge. I think it was 60 feet. Not a scratch on him and woke him up as well. The camp then put up a railing and does not have any tent sites near there. I shared this with a fellow dad and he laughed and said that his son sleepwalks as well. Gotta love that o-well attitude! I do like the bells idea and a plan in advance though.

  2. Men or women leaders, Im thankful for whoever get the kids into scouting. However- In my pack the 'men' do not want to do anything! I've been told by each and everyones wife that fact. Go to a school open house and you see the same thing. The men are tired and need to play video games to unwind. I had a free ride for 1 leader to go to summer camp, FREE. I finally got a mother to come. The men didn't want to go out and have fun.

  3. I've sat in a bundh of the committee meetings- sat in cause they wont let me talk! it is always 2 folks doing all the talking and interupring when anyone else tries to speak. Always intresting. Guiding the scoutmaster? I always like how anytime I bring something up to the TM in front of the group he says I should have addressed him in private 1st. Not goin to happen cause I cant get any talk in the meetings. All the same trained or no trained it is always a few folks running the show, I was in human services for quite a while and sat in well over a thousand meetings and that is the rule not the exception.

  4. Thanks for all answers. Fishing derby pretty simple. Safe shore, safe lake/large pond, sponser(bait shop) and prizes for most, biggest ect , 2 hours with catch and release- all the fish were kept in buckets to be judged and released back.No new scouts and this was a district event who did a fine job. Someone he told me how they too had a fishing tournament for the grade school. Except 1 man was upset that they used the word 'tournament' and contacted some sanctioning fishing body who in turn sent the kind man that did all of the work a cease and desist letter. Once again grown ups ruining it for the kids!

  5. As the original poster I thank each and everyones response. There are 5 troops within 45 minutes, I plan on taking the 3 Webeloes(1 & 2) to visit this fall. My sons troop is dying as well. Besides the displine issues they had 2 cubs join. I explained 2 kids a year in a troop of 12(with 16 registered adults) will not last but they have no problem with it. Tent camp 1 time this year, 3 overniters cancelled this year sofar(no plan b)Recruiting? Our school is small with 60 being the average grade size. I am thankful for my boys pack we do have and the mothers help. I say mothers cause the dads dont want to do anything. Fact not my 2 cents but thats for another time. We had a fishing derby where 3500 fliers were handed out and 6 kids were there last week. Ive asked council for guidance for finding a troop to adopt us but never heard back. For me I'm still leaning toward a scout troop, what made more of a difference for us Cubs or Boy scouts??? Maybe anther topic right there-mmm...

  6. The pack is dying, less than 8 now with me doing it all. In a few years my boys will be out of cubs and no decent troop to go to. My other son's troop will not work. A scout there choked one of the boys and the scoutmaster said that since there is nothing in the bylaws nothing could be done to displine the kid...They dont see it as a problem and dont want to change anything. The new troop would be boy led with fewer than 10 scouts. I dont see any parental help except for signing the paperwork so I'd be doing all of the work as well. 10 years ago there was a troop here but politics ran it into the ground. The troop trailer and equipment is all missing, a fiasco in itself. So the troop would be from scratch. What does the forum say if only one choice cubs or scouts?

  7. Breakfast, ceral and pop tarts, Scouts did not have lunch after 'somebody' forgot to bring hot dogs & buns. O well. Town is less than a mile away but no one would go. Poor planning was the excuse given by SM. So Dinner was a fish fry where freinds and families are invited with a price. No french fries for the scouts, the SM didnt want to get more poatoes. Only the paying public could have the fries. Do I complain, bite my tongue or just say let them eat cake!!!

  8. Council has told you what the conditions are needed to cover your buses. The church has told their conditions. If you dont like those conditions keep looking. You said you wouldnt "step forward if that was the only insurance" so you do not transport scouts now, in the past or in the future?

  9. Outcome dont take it personal- In my pack had a new webeloe 2, excited as you describe. Home life as you describe. So I changed some of the stuff around so he and dad could come on his weekend(at dads request). Never came anyway-Well they dropped out, 'we didn't do anything' he says.

  10. Do what you heart tells you. Im the one man show here.Im all of the dens leaders and any other position. No committee, no district help and council? Well...Sure its a lot of work but the rewards are, the best as you know. Remember we don't take photos of the kids playing videogames do we? Or tell the group of 100 parents that they have to tell their boys why the pack folded!

  11. I posted about tent camping at a baseball game. Got me thinking - I still have the same problem of getting adults willing to help. Help with leading/co leading events. This baseball thing is like $12 for all you can eat hot dogs/hamburgs pop, the game, camping on the field and juice&krispy kreme donuts in the morning- Reasonable cost? Sure. Even with this ease of camping(and merit badge worthiness) and low physical activity(parking lot to field)no parents step up. Kids just wanto have fun but they need support from adults. I am amazed how at little league you will have 5 coaches to help for 6 weeks when in scouts cant get 2 adults to teach(for even 1 weekend) kids lessons for life...

  12. Yes it meets the 'requirements' I agree. There is also the kayak merit badge offered in the local swimming pool, is that any different? I guess not... Sure some of us would love to go hiking in the mountains, beach, ect but time(parents) wont allow. Baseball campout and big trips still need the same things, leaders and parents to bring the kids. I will let you know how this campout works out but I betcha that it will only be me and my family. Cant get anyone other parents/leaders to go...
