  1. Scoutldr, My son is the only Boy Scout in our hometown. We drive 25 miles one way to attend Troop meetings and events. There is one troop closer, but it didn't seem to be a good match for my son. He wanted this troop and I figured it should be his choice not mine. Kittle
  2. John D, I am not kidding on the schedule. Our very small town takes baseball very serious. My husband takes sports very serious, as does my mother-in-law. Yes, a few of us parents are cowards about confronting the coaches. If we do, our son will only warm the bench. OGE, I would tend to agree with you (as would my son). But with that said, I want my son to experience some team play and there isn't much other opportunity for that in our area. The only other league in the immediate area requires that you be too old to play in the regular summer league.
  3. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. The suggestions will help a lot. Then we will talk to the SM and let her in on what is happening. Now to answer a couple of the questions (comments). BW, his dad and I aren't going to be able to compromise on this subject. I will just have to give in to the fact that he feals sports is VERY important. If I asked the coach to let him leave a few minutes early, he wouldn't be allowed to play much because they wouldn't see his as devoted enough. That is just the way how small town is. The team my son is on as ended up in 1st ever since they were t-
  4. How do you normally handle this? I have never had to worry about it before. Summer is here and we finally got my son's baseball practice and game schedule. He has practice or game every Tuesday, which is ehn his Scout meetings are. Practice gets over at 7 and his meetings start at 7. If they were in the same town, that wouldn't be much of a problem, but his meetings are 20 miles from home. I don't want him to give up Scouts for the summer (because he really enjoys scouts). But his father won't want him to miss ball. I am willing to take him to his meetings late, but how much will he really get
  5. I am ashamed to say that I am not sure where my son's troop stands on the uniform issue. I can say that the pack I am a leader in is lucky to get boys to pack meetings with even a uniform shirt on. We had 2 show up to the pinewood derby in non-uniform. The parents don't see it as important, so it seems neither do the boys. With that said, I want to add something. I am in the process of finding my son a pair of shorts and a pair of pants, at his request. He never asked for these as a Cub Scout, but as a Boy Scout he wants them. I told him that if I didn't find a pair soon, I would buy him
  6. I hadn't thought about calling the DNR. The closest college that might have a Geology department is about 85 miles. No quarries in the area, but there is a mine. I will call them tommorrow and see if they can help. My only problem with the reguirement is that is says to find 2 examples of fossils in your area. I take that to mean that the boys are supposed to find the fossil, not just see them.
  7. We are getting ready to work on the Geologist pin. I have figured out what I would like to do with the boys, but I have one problem. The last requirement says to find 2 examples of fossils in your area. I have no idea where to start looking.
  8. Have fun for me. I would like to go, but it will probably be several years before I am able. At the moment I have a 4 year old (and no babysitter). Once again, have fun.
  9. I spoke to the Bear leader. She is going to work with my Webelos den on communicator so I can work with her Bear on some of the skills that she isn't as comfortable with. SP, thanks for the kind words. There are only 9 boys in our Pack (since my son crossed over and I try to encourage all of them. I figured my son could help a little too because this boy looks up to him somewhat. Thanks again everyone, I think this boy will finish his rank withing a couple of weeks of school being out. Then he can start doing things with the 2nd year Webelos. I will have an assistant leader next yea
  10. I found with my son's bear den (we were in a different pack) that with notes and chats, I could get the parents involved. But with this Pack, it has been hard to get parents involved. I, as Webelos leader, have been able to get parents to help their boys a little. This boy has scouts taken away from him for things that happen at school. I worked with him at the end of last year to help him finish his Wolf rank. It is my hope to inspire this boy to work. When my Webelos are working on something that will work with his requirements, I invite hime to join us. He is the only active Bear in o
  11. My son wants a pair of the pants and shorts. His reason, he wants the full uniform. He also wants a campaign hat because he doesn't like baseball caps. He has had a pair in the past and didn't find them uncomfortable.
  12. Can we allow boys a couple weeks after school is out to finish their rank requirements? We have a Bear in ou Pack that I would like to work with but I won't get a chance untill after school is officially out. He isn't in my den, but he is a good boy and I would like to help hem.
  13. Just have to add, Peaceful1, that I know of some men that don't look good with their uniforms tucked in. With that sais, I expect the boys to wear theirs tucked in so I will wear mine tucked in (unless I find myself expecting again).
  14. Vegas DJ, You stated that you did a webshirt that explained this with clarity. Can you please link it so that I can print it up. I did my own web search before posting this question and was so confused, that is why I posted this.
  15. I read somewhere about using a sandwich with many layers to explain the layers of the earth. I was wonderng if anyone could help me with this or give me other suggestions for working on this pin. I have a group of 4 4th graders that are very 'restless'.
  16. That is the exact answer I was looking for. I was wanting to take the knot off my son's shirt.
  17. He had uniform pants (and shorts) until about 3 months ago when he out grew them. He has a hat, neckerchief (not the one for his troop yet because they were out), slide, shirt (with red loops), and belt. No uniform pants at the moment (but I am looking for a pair). He had never had a pair of the socks. Not to brag, but he was 1 of only 2 boys in our Pack to weear their uniform to den meetings). I was wondering about the insignia because he was told that he would have to take his religous knot off until he earned it as a Boy Scout. I was supposed to go to training this weekend, but
  18. Piedmont, I will be very happy if more than 1 of my next year's Webelos II earn their AOL. To date, only 1 has earned his Webelos badge (9 months into the program). I hope he does better in Boy Scouts.
  19. That is the type of information that I was looking for. I was wondering if his purple religous knot stayed on his shirt or not.
  20. Thank you, everyone, for your input. My son has been looking at the rank requirements and does want to get them. (Now comes the BUT) But until he learns to swim, he isn't going to go very far. He is working on this but it can be a slow process. Also, since he is homeschooled he can work on them as school projects. This is what we have done in Cub Scouts.
  21. 1) When is a good time for a new scout to beging working on merit badges? 2) What is a good one to start with? If you want any other information, please just let me know. kittle
  22. moves from a Cub Scout Pack to a Boy Scout Troop? And if you can, can you lead me to where it is written.
  23. I don't know the official rules, but I would like to add my experience. I bought a woman's shirt and it was too short to keep tucked in (which drove me nuts). I am not a slendor woman, but I think that the uniform looks 'odd' when it is worn untucked.
  24. EL, You stated that nor even your sons know that you don't believe in God. How is it that they do not know this and live in your home. My children know where I stand on these issues and I knew where mine stood (even though we never discussed it). They know, or at least have thier suspicions. Kittle
  25. My son has only went on 1 troop campout, so I am not sure how it works everytime. But this time, it was $9 per camper or parent.
