  1. Welcome!!

Advice...sounds like you've got a wonderfully active Brownie Troop already :)

    1. Encourage tree-climbing

    2. Take them fishing

    3. Put yourself in a kid frame of mind - learn something new as often as you find the opportunity. The UK Girl Guides have a website that encourages this kind of growth for leaders of girls, called BOGUK - it's a grownup badge program! This year I've learned a little latin, have figured out how to adjust and clean the thermostat for my furnace, started knitting...

    4. Stand back and admire all that your girls can do for themselves - put together the spaghetti sauce, drain the noodles, chopping the onions, none of this need be done by the grownup! For us big people, these are *chores* - for the youngsters, these are moments of triumph ;)

    5. Lemonade, from real lemons, with fresh mint = instant Brownie meeting

    6. Meet out of doors every chance you get. They'll learn to remember sweaters and proper footwear that much quicker. Out of doors doesn't have to be anything more than opening the door and stepping outside - it can be lots more than this, but if you're in the habit of going outside frequently, other outdoor adventures no longer seem so daunting.

    7. Never turn a new girl away :)

    Whew!

  2. Ai-yi-yi-yi-YI!

Nonononoo...When she is in college she can finally be in Campus Girl Scouts and they are really coming on strong now! They have national conventions and they are totally downright COOL. O the other hand, I do hear real good stuff about Venturing but nothing says she cant do both ;) Anyway, we need girls like her around to keep us all on the right path!

Check out the national Campus Girl Scouts website: http://www.campusgirlscouts.org/

and also a page on the official GS website.

    Peace!

  3. FuzzyBear, do folks from on here ever appear in your dreams? ;)

That was seriously scary - me, an engineer..Nah, I'm one of those chameleon types who learned to "speak" geekytech - my ex is a mathematician - he did fractal research and number theory. Me, I'm a former misfit in the dept of family social science. I liked the science better than the social. I'm an ENFP, light on the E and the F. My current co-leader is a strongly type-cast ENFP. She's a ridiculously brainy stay-at-home mom and karaoke singer. My former coleader is CFO of her own architectural firm. Awesome lady.

My kiddo is I think a lot like you. I have no idea what she'll be when she grows up. She's already an absent-minded professor. ENTP seems to be her. There are times I just plain dont understand her at all, and I tend to feel like I understand people pretty well. She confuses and challenges me :)

    Time for sleep,

    Peace to all,

    Anne in Mpls

  4. ummm.....this was a *test* message...folks, I like you lots, but are we so enthralled with one another that even a test message draws our interest? :))

Forgive me, I now can't even remember what the heck my original posting was even about...it was 2 am.

Weirdly, GSUSA makes a point of communicating how unhappy Juliette was in her marriage to William Low, but doesn't even make mention of her turning down Lord Robert Baden Powell. I think her life story has been told this way in every edition of GSUSA handbooks I've seen.

Anne, who played the role of Lord Robert Baden Powell in a playlet put on by her troop for Juliette Low's Bday (is that so wrong?) in Minneapolis

  5. Ok, it's not a movie yet, but it would be perfect...

The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong

one girl and 5 boys are the only students in a Dutch one room schoolhouse. Lina writes an essay about how migrating storks used to nest in their village, and the rest of the class rally to find a way to bring the storks back.

This is a movie that must be made :)

  6. Hey, I'm really liking the possibilities in the original Parent Trap...

Now if I can just find a copy of it for sale :))

Jeepers, I think even us girls had a total crush on Haley Mills and Haley Mills! Did I say that?

Did you ever think of what the surfer movie title was?

    Hmmm...Xena, Warrior Princess, huh?

    Somebody suggested Totally Blonde II...

Still wracking my brain with the rest of you,

    Anne in Mpls

  7. I bought the DVD (looking back, should have bought the video - our camps have VCRs, not DVDs!)

It is a fabulous film - no argument from me! I

m still looking for something portraying *girls working together* - so far every film that's been recommended to me has been about one girl standing alone - certainly worthwhile and an honorable message, but I'm still looking for something portraying that patrol-size grouping...

    The search continues....

  8. You remind me a lot of my kiddo - and she's been hard to figure out but is most likely an ENTP. Maybe that's usual for being an ENTP??

They say that under great stress, people will tend to "flip" to the opposite of their temperament - I know I can get ridiculously rigid and judgmental when I'm stressed out - and heck, I don't even like myself when I'm like that ;)

  9. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!

This is the stuff of which my blood boils..

First off, troops are never supposed to be "full". Our council compromised on this and has leaders sign an agreement to take at least 10 girls into their troop. Still, leaders seem to think of the troop as "theirs" and turn away girls all the time. Nasty business there. Ick. Ick ick ick.

Secondly, yes, the Juliettes program is the fairly newish name for individual registrations. Girl Scout Express is probably your council's version of a girl scouts by mail tpye program that generally is an introduction to GS resources.

Thirdly, husbands and wives may indeed co-lead GS troops. The requirement is that whenever related adults lead a troop together, at least one other non-related leader is needed. Someone in the troop's adult leadership must be female.

I understand you are already volunteering, and you must choose where to best utilize your time and talents, but I urge you to please follow up these issues locally so that others are not similarly discouraged. A phone call to the council - ask for your area's field manager - this is the name of the council staff person who is supposed to supervise the volunteers in your service unit.

For further information, see if you can get your hands on a current edition of Safety-Wise (the GSUSA counterpart to G2SS).

    In peace,

    Anne in Mpls

  10. LOL

Y'all have told me everything I expected to hear :)

Here's the scoop: I posted this because basically what they wanted me to do in the intern position I posted about on another thread (grrr.) was to invent a database for all these wonderful new volunteers they have yet to bother recruiting. But they were soooooooo worried about burning out all these lovely fictitious new volunteers that they wanted to have only one person at the local level to contact them. I never did get a chance to tell them what I thought of that ;)

Anyway, I'm toying with the idea of putting together our own database for our SU. And if I happen to recruit some new volunteers in the meantime, well, I recruited em, and I can tell em straight up what to expect in terms of how often they'll be contacted. Council can go and....do whatever they want ;) Nuff said. Thank you all for responding - I appreciate you greatly!

  11. On lighting matches,

I found working one on one with them was easiest. We practiced lighting a contained candle on the sidewalk.

What fire needs to burn: fuel air energy - where are these three things with a match?

Determining a safe place for a fire and with adult permission and supervision only.

First, what a match is - we compare the two kinds of matches - strike anywhere with two stripes of chemicals, and the "strike on box" kind, with only one chemical.

We used the strike anywhere and struck them on the concrete.

Point: how to hold a burning match. Demonstrate the match going out when held straight up, burning down when held downwards. Never drop a lit match. Keep fingers from burning by turning match upright.

how to protect flame from wind, get the flame to the wick of the candle.

how to put out the match, safe storage of matches, new and used.

There is surprisingly a lot to learn here.

Apologies - just realized I may have posted all this before, last summer.

Get Ready for the New Girl Scouts of the USA Web Site!

Summer is here and there are great new changes on the cyber-horizon! GSUSA is delighted to announce the July 15th launch of Girl Scouts of the USA's newly designed Web site (http://www.girlscouts.org). With its fresh, updated look, and more intuitive structure, I hope you'll find the new site easy to navigate, useful as a resource, and fun to use. You can expect some new and exciting features on the site, along with a few robust enhancements of some tried-and-true favorites. As with all Web development, continued enhancements will be forthcoming and we will look to you for ongoing input and suggestions for new content. Enjoy!

a.. We're thrilled to launch our brand new site for girls 5-11 called Girls Only (http://www.gogirlsonly.org'>http://www.gogirlsonly.org), which takes the place of our Just 4 Girls site. Please be sure to reset your bookmark to this fun-and safe-place for girls to play games, read stories, ask Dr. M questions, answer polls, and more. If your council Web site currently links to Just 4 Girls, please change the link from http://jfg.girlscouts.org to http://www.gogirlsonly.org on July 15, 2004.

a.. Girl Scout Central is a new online area designed to answer all of your Girl Scout-related questions. The alphabetical index serves as a quick reference to valuable information for all Girl Scout members and councils, as well as individuals interested in finding out more about our organization. Many of the useful features for leaders and advisors found in Just 4 Girls will now be found in Girl Scout Central.

a.. Please note, the Graphics Gallery and Girl Scout Service Mark will no longer be available on the public Web site. Clip art for use by Girl Scout councils will be made available at a later date on a seperate site.

When the new Girl Scout Web site launches, be sure to visit the links under "What's New" on the home page for an overview of some of the new features of the site. As you can see, we have a lot to celebrate as we move forward into 2004. Enjoy the rest of your summers and have fun touring the new site!

  13. July is reportedly the only month of the year that snow had never been recorded in Minnesota. "Bring Warm Clothes" is not just a book title or a suggestion. We had below freezing temps overnight last week. I am serious - verify with your favorite online weather channel.

Mosquito netting is not such a bad idea either. Though so far I've heard West Nile Virus has only gone as far north as Iowa so far this year. Lyme disease *is* an issue in these parts.

I suppose it would be rather unscoutlike of me to suggest you custom order your squirrel fur underwear from LLBean? I did this to a foreign exchange student - told him he would need to call their 800 line and tell them specifically that he needed the custom squirrel fur underwear - it's not carried in the regular catalog. Really had him going...

    Peace out,

  14. Here's a real man's use of peanut butter. This recipe is from my grandpa - used to be a boy scout and a scoutmaster.

Spread peanut butter on one slice of good bread. Hollow out a green pepper, stuff the bread inside. Eat whole.

My favorite camp counselor at Camp Ruby Lake prepared this treat for us (and I used to hate tomatoes with a vengeance):

Peanut butter sandwiches with sliced tomoatoes instead of jelly. Amazingly good. Tastes just like peanut butter and jelly.

    Peace out,

  15. Trying to remember if this has ever been discussed on this forum. Every now and again I find it useful. The MBTI is a method of analysing personality traits. There are 4 continua (continuums?)

E and I: extroversion and introversion

S and N: sensation and intuition

F and T: feeling and thinking

P and J: perceiving and judging

http://www.boomspeed.com/zsnp/mbti.htm is a site for more info.

I like to try this out on my kiddo: I know she's as much if not more E than I am, I also know she is *strongly* T, I havn't yet really zeroed in on whether she's P or J, I think she may be more N than S, making her basically an outgoing version of her dad. Dad's an INTJ. I suspect my kiddo's an ENTP.

My co-leader is, I fear, a more strongly cast version of me: a fellow ENFP. I begin to realize I cant count on her to fill in the things that I let fall through the cracks, like I could with my last co-leader, an INTP who quietly saw what was needed and swept up and turned straw into gold. My ENFP coleader will drop everything (once I can get her attention) and talk for hours. My enormously practical INTP friend needed coaxing and a "good excuse" to take time for a cup of coffee.

Wondering if others see this play out in troop leadership...

  16. What do I love...it's helpful to remember why I spend the time I do on this.

I'm an idealist - what I love most is the potential - this is also why I get so easily frustrated too - those of you who are into personality typing, I'm an enfp - I live in the realm of possibilities - it's so annoying to me when other people cant see what can be as clearly as I think I do ;)

Scouting keeps me grounded - idealism is all fine and dandy, but the moments of real joy - a knot tied, a friendship mended, a pitched tent, a really tasty goulash seasoned with a stray dead leaf or bit of I-hope-its-crushed-rock - these things are good for me.

    Peace,

    Anne in Mpls

  17. Now now...

we're all Scouts here. The only proper peanut butter to eat is that which we've grown and smashed ourselves using rocks and leaves,or using hand-whittled equipment.

Ed's allowed his chilled variety as long as he lashes the evaporating cooler himself. (And JIF is spelled with one f, not two :)

    Peace out,

    Anne in Mpls
