  1. KoreaScouter,

Jesus would probably tell us to love the sinner and hate the sin.

I have no problem with a group denying membership to certain people provided those guidelines are adhered to in all cases & make sense (like the DAR example). When the membership criteria isn't adhered to in "special" cases, then I start to worry. From what i can see, the BSA doesn't fall into this category.

  2. This is a sad situation. Even though the charges were dropped, trustworthy is still there. Did he or did he not commit the crimes he was charged with? If not, then no problem. If so, then problem. Since the whole matter seems to have gone full circle, I think this discussion could focus on "what if's". Maybe that's a new thread.

  3. sctmom,

He's gonna get picked on some. He will probably be sent on a left handed smoke shifter with the hickory handle or 50' of right handed shore line hunt by the Scouts how fell for this the prior year. This isn't hazing, just a timeless prank that is done in fun. I know the Scouts in my Troop who spent 1 1/2 hrs looking for the shore line can't wait for "new blood" at summer camp.

  4. Don't kick him out. I have always said the kids who really need the program are these kind of kids! He made a mistake, based on the hearsay. I would try to find out if this is fact or fiction then have a general discussion on what Trustowrthy means to the Scouts. A Troop meeting would be a good venue.

  5. eisely,

You make a good point. However, I do see the point of the Eagle Service Project not being done for the BSA. There are a variety of things the BSA camps in my area could use & would make a great Eagle Service Project. But then what would the OA do & what about the other Scouts who need service hours for rank? These are the people who should be doing the service projects at the BSA owned properties.

  6. I just found this thread. Take the American flag off the uniform???? Why??? I can think of no good reason to do this!

Yes the Boy Scout badge is plain. Remember, it IS NOY A RANK! The 1st rank is Tenderfoot! If the Scout doesn't like the Boy Scout badge, tough! Like someone else posted, do some work & earn your Tenderfoot!

  7. I agree this is quite a feat but why? What did he learn in the process? An Eagle at 12? That hardly seems possible considering he started at age 11. The time requirements for ranks are 10 months plus 1 month for his personal fitness for rank. Some merit badges are 90 day badges! Something seems amiss to me.

I had a Scout in my Troop who had the same idea. He never really "earned" a merit badge. He learned nothing and is no longer in Scouting

  8. I have always thought the concept of "treating animals humanly" was interesting. Shouldn't we treat animals as animals instead of humans? By the way, when did animals get rights? I must have missed the vote on that one!

PETA also stands for People Eating Tasty Animals!

  9. sctmom,

I require the Scouts in my Troop to be in full uniform for Scoutmaster's Conferences & BOR's. They must also have their Scout handbook with them. If either is missing, their conference or BOR is postponed until thee next week.

  10. scoutmom,

There is only one elementary school in my borough.

    Chippewa 29,

The "you don't want to join ...." is part of the problem. My feeder Pack has a good program. The problem is the program is going to suffer if there are no Cubs.

    slontwovy,

30% amounts to about 5-7 kids.

The adult leadership trouble I refered to is due to turnover. The current leadership has been with the Pack for 5+ years & looking to move on.

  11. Rooster 7,

The tap out ceremony is not hazing! They made drastic changes to the tap out in my council. Now it is done in the parade field & the mystique is gone.

I had a summer camp staff member once tell me sending Scouts on a "left handed smoke shifter with the hickory handle" hunt was hazing. Makes you wonder, huh?

  12. The Pack that feeds my Troop has started to experience inequitable recruiting. There are two Packs in my borough. Cub Fall Roundup is done at the borough elementry school & both Packs are present. The adult leaders from on pack are on the PTA & heavily involved in borough politics. At roundup, they get 70% of the new Cubs & my feeder Pack gets the rest. The Pack that gets most of the kids has a membership of around 80 Cubs. I was one of the original committee members of my feeder Pack & don't want to see it die. By not getting enough new kids, the adult leadership is also in trouble. I have already talked to my unit commissioner & he is planning on taking some type of action. Any suggestion on what (if anything) we should do from here. My big concern is if the Pack folds, my Troop will be hurting for new Scouts & could fold as a result.
