Desert, No idea why they did it, but they did. Could it be that that's a period of Sea Scouting/Sea Exploring that they would like to forget?
-
John, Could you clarify sponsor and Eagle? Does that mean the Adviser or committee intro the scout?

one thing popular form the Lousiana troops were the mini Tabasco bottle hatpins. Also I made a bunch of woggles and was trading those as well. Unfortuatley I spent most of my time trading pacthes.

having problems with this site onthe home computer, so I'm reattemtping to post. Emb, According to one website that did a handout on the Sea Scout uniform changes, in 2002 printing, the use of unit numbers or ship's patch became optional. Sorry I don't have the exact page number, but it was like p111 of the 2002 printing. Now my 1987 printing manual is almost identical to the 2002 printing, but it is numbered differently. I cannot find that optional statement anywhere. Desert, In reference to knots allowed, pgs. 114 and 115 of the current manual state: No youth awards are worn by adults on any Sea Scout uniforms with the exception of Quartermaster, Eagle Scout, Venturing Silver, and the old Air Scout Ace Awards; Honor Medal, Heroism Award, Medal of Merit, and Hornaday Award; and Scout religious awards. Under this policy the following knots cannot be worn by adults: the current Arrow of Light and Venturing Leadership Awards, and the older Exploring Ranger, Exploring Silver, Exploring G.O.L.D. Award, and Young American Award (which if memory serves, the last three used the same knot; I know my old council used the same knot for the G.O.L.D Award and YAA). Again no explanation was given.

True enough. And I admit, i'm old school enough that I prefer, stress prefer, a completely uniformed Scout, Sea Scout, or Venturer having an EBOR. BUT you got to follow BSA policies. BSA polocies state a) crews can create their own uniforms, and B) uniform is not necessary for an EBOR. I admit, I do not like the policy as I would like to see the young man in the uniform, whether Scout, national venturing, or crew distinctive ID uni, but we must follow national's rules.

Yep this is a DE/SE issue. Assault is involved, Check. Insurance is involved, Check. had issues with inappropriate touching in past check. yep it's a DE/SE issue. My advice would be follow the directions of the SE.

In my troop growing up, someone made a ring for our troop flag WAY before national created one. Every single troop ribbon received went on it going back to its founding 1967. Yep my troop was a young troop.

bac, Go to Scoutstuff.org then uniforms, then shirts and BINGO the these are the new Venturing Shirts. Hmm maybe I should call my local shop and see if they have the old ones on sale? Then again I still have my EXPLORING BSA one, 'cause it's been worn so much the Venturing BSA strip national gave out doesn't match.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

In ref to Supply's ability to communicate, for whatever reason, they have people with actual marketing, sales, and IT experience working for them. Grant you they are not perfect, i.e. look at some of the catalogs literature, esp the one with the dog in a centennial necker and female leaders needing MB sashes, but overall they do a good job. Wish someone with actual scouting experience could point out some of the errors though.

A few comments. 1) Agree with Emb that the EBOR needs to understand Venturing policy. 2)I would have the Venturer remind the EBOR that crews can have distictive ID uniforms of their own choosing. 3)If i wanted to be curt with the EBOR, I'd have the Venturer to please point out in the Adavcnement guidleines that any uniform is required for advancement purposes. grant you I don't like it, but if they are being a PITA, I can go with the punches. Had to at my EBOR, but that's a different story.

How does one become a trainer?
Eagle92 replied to oldisnewagain1's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Sorry I'm showing my age. TtT = Train the Trainer, it came out before TDC. -
Another reason why I say go to maroon.
-
Honetly, they look ugly. And why is there a venturing logo on the left pocket, a place where those venturers who are workign on Eagle or are Eagle can wear their rank patch at? Also adults completing Powderhorn wear that insignia there? At least they didn't inlcude a "smokes' pocket on the sleeve.

One piece of advice a former DE of mine gave me, whenever you teach a new course that you have taken an older version of, i.e. you took New Leader Essentials and are teaching This is Scouting, go ahead and list yourself on the student sheet as well just in case council's records are messed up. that way you will be considered trained by Scoutnet. I went through CSBLT back in the day and recently taught TCDL specific, CSDL Specific, and WDL Specfic. I went ahead and put myself as a student as well, just to make sure SCOUTNET keeps me listed as trained. never knwo when a code will be dropped from computer programs. -

NJ, thanks for soem inside scoop. I do have a question though: if the YP Quiz doesn't count, then why have it available at all? -

Contact your district training chair, and if you don't have one then your council training chair. Every council and district does things differenly. In some councils the selection process is rigourous, and in others any warm body will do. Also there has been some challenges in referecne to which training course to take: E.D.G.E. or Train the Trainer. Some courses require E.D.G.E., others Train the Trainer, andstill some doesn't matter. Also some councils have doen away tith TtT in favor of EDGE solely. -
I've been told by someone who works in Supply that the answer is "NO." Personally I'd go with maroon as it was one of the colors being considered for the venturing logo. heck I may still have the CD i got at the conference with the maroon and gold Venturing logo.

What is "High adventure skill training for Venturers"
Eagle92 replied to CNYScouter's topic in Venturing Program
I'm thinking more along the lines of a 64 mile trip in the Canadian wilderness where you need to prep trips to master your canoeing skills, i.e. stokes, rescues, stowing gear, etc. Our "consultants" were leaders who had experience doing this type of long distance canoeing and wilderness camping. And they made darn sure we knew the canoeing and then some. Once in Canada, we had a local troop act as guides, they gave us some additional advice for that particular stretch of wilderness. -
Emb had a chance to look at the sea explorer manual I have and you are 100% correct, unit numbers were NOT an option. the option was to have a ship emblem or not. And even then the ship emblem was worn on the RIGHT sleeve, belwo the US flag and above the Standard Ship emblem. IT was optional; either that or a round Seaa Scout emblem was worn there.

What is "High adventure skill training for Venturers"

BP, Agree HA activities do need special advance training and prep work. I would not feel comfortable letting a new leader with only IOLS go on a 50 Miler on the AT. Heck I've done advance training with the BSA as a youth for an HA expedition and did training with the Eckerd Foundation on trip planning, and I would still want to review the details and get necessary certs/recerts on things. Again we agree on that. But what I believe RK mentioned was the fact national has stated that WeLOT and IOLS would be merging. originally this would cover basic outdoor skills for WDLs, Scout leaders, and Venturing leaders (mandatory for them since Jan 1 2010 if they have an outdoor program). Originally it was stated that it would be combined this year, now they are pushing it back. In reference to HA activities, I'm told Powderhorn is a great course for an intro. Me personally I would use a consultant or other expert to help plan and prep a unit for a trip. hence I would focus the trainign to that one specific trip, and have everyone go through it. Just my $.02 worth. -
